@doboyle1955 It's a tribute to the artist Laurence Lowry; he used to use stickmen in his paintings instead of people. There's a song by Brian and Michael called Matchstalk men and Matchstalk cats and dogs which is about the same guy =]
Plays on woolworths radio in australia... took me forever to find out what it was called. I searched and asked for almost a year. incredable use of psycadelic music and lyrics. Absolutley mesmorising. Easily the best song on the radio at woolies.
Plays on woolworths radio in Australia. I first heard it and immediately recognised as a hippieesque kind of song. Took me a year to finally find out what it was called and it's been repeated many a time since. I always get excited when they play it at work, which seems to be around christmas time. Amusingly this song is 17 years older than me... but that's alright...it still impresses people even younger than me.
I still have some of the original Quo LP's in my loft, they are treasured possessions of my brother whose wife refuses to have them in the house. Not surprised as my brother could never play them at anything other than the loudest
Yeah! I bought this record in the summer of '68 all these colorful 45's with colorful music a kid could buy in a sleeve with a handle the shiniest new record just magic.
@Mikebenal i was born in 1954 , a little bit to young to have that feeling to live in the sixties , but the music was very good at that time , when i was 16 , and the time has come to go to the dancings , it was the 70 , an that were good also , sad for the young ones that this moment the music means nothing
@walter4092 I was also born in 1954 but was fortunate enough to have a sister in high school during the mid 60's. I was exposed to a lot of great rock music just like this. Sure do miss that era and it's music.
@1973Veteran I'm your age, and miss the music of that era. There was so much great music, one could hardly keep up with it. The top artists were on TV frequently with several network TV shows featuring rock music. The high energy top-40 radio stations of the era, like WLS, WABC, CKLW and others added to the excitement. What a time!

Talk about the Wa Wa, this was the poster child for that sound and I mean that in a nice way! Super classic that sounded great on the stereo as it was mixed so well.
I remember going in my room and turning on my strobe light and turning on. This song does not get airplay on those so called oldies/classic rock stations. Maybe it's better that way.
@OConnorful But in a decade where this music is a minority and "artists" like Bieber rule the airwaves. I like having my computer and gadgets, but I would give it all up in a heartbeat if I could live back in the 60's.
@AdamGiannone The 60's weren't that good. Full of racism and the fear of nuclear war. Bieber is shit yes, but doesn't run the air ways and will die out in a few years. Now, we get the best bits of the 60s. This music isn't worth living back then for.
@OConnorful Well, I guess it's an opinion really. Like I said, I would definitely go back. The culture, the music, and even though people have more rights now, it was still more free then. Heck, I'm wearing an ascot tie right now! :D
Oh yeah, the summer of '68. Traveling from St. Paul to Los Angeles with my battery operated phonograph, desert heat, listening to this over and over... And over. Brings back memories of being 14 again. At least the music was good!
@TheDragonseed5: Oh yeah, the Summer of '68. Traveling from Delaware City, DE to Brownsville, TX; crewmember aboard the SS New York Getty, with my marine radio, thinking about beaches, women, friends, and Gulf heat.....tunes like this allowed serendipidy.....
The wah wah petal's had only been out for a scant year or two. Up till then you could have Fuzz tone and um.. raw feedback from the amp. That was it.. hehe
So for the times this was a pretty new sound. I loved this song when it came out.
@clyde8her three psychedilc anthems they played at a pub on CD where i went ina gadda di vida pictures of match stick men and the animals house of the rising sun it was a nice change from all this rap stuff

andrewbarrett42- I was around in 68, and the instrument you asked about is not an organ, it is a "wah wah" pedal for a lead guitar. Believe me. I had one, and Eric Clapton uses one like it in White Room at the end.
Is Rossi using the wah wah in the original version.... I remember this song made it to #12 on the Billboard charts in 1968 when I was in High School.....on the top of the pops video its not used....

@jappibruut The difference between now and then was that in those days good songs were actually at the top of the charts whereas nowadays you have to dig a lot more to find anything good. i.e Tallest Man on Earth is a great musician of today but you would never have heard of him if you go by whats the most popular. That being said there is still alot of music that is not popular for good reason.

Just pondering something about the lyrics; who are the matchstick men?
Peradventure they were just imaginary figures constructed from wooden matches during a drug-induced haze . . . .
