Beautiful performance Top... You really know your horse stuff. I hope to start a ranch/range one day and perhaps you folks could be of some assistance to me then. Well keep your thinking cap on. The videos are much appreciated. Sincerely, Scott.
Oh yeah, tons... It depends a little on her horsenality. Try holding a stick in front of her when she walks, and clicking when her leg accidentally bumps it. After 3 clicks, stop, hold it out, and see if she reaches for it. They usually will. If not, pinch her chestnut to cue her to lift her foot, and have the stick set up where her foot will hit it by mistake, then she should get the idea. After she will reach for the stick consistently at a standstill, try holding it out while you're walking.
To transfer the cue to your legs, just blend in your leg movements with her trying to paw the stick. Phase out the stick by using it for 3 clicks, then just cuing with your leg, then using it for 2 clicks, then using just your leg, then 1/1, etc. Then try swinging your legs riding bareback. That's when most horses really get the idea.
Just use a tongue click. Pop your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Not the "cluck" sound for trot, which is on the side, but on the roof. It works great and keeps your hands free. It's been proven 50% more effective than using a spoken word, so definitely go that route instead of saying, "good," or "yes".
She's a beautiful little one. (: I'm in the process of teaching my horse this. Liberty stuff is awesome. It's something I do a lot too. :D
