  • I remember this when I was young :)

  • This song is depressing and the worst song I have ever heard in all my life it does not sound cheerful if, anyting it is very evil and sick.

  • @rojblake82 yeah its kicks ass!

  • @blackstonewielder19 This song is too depressing to listen to, I bloody hated it first time I heard it and it is no nicer to listen to now.

  • @rojblake82 why do u make this comment on every version of this song??????????????????? its just a song dude gt over it !!

  • this song makes me sad =(

    are you guys sad?

  • Proud to say I'm Jamaican and know every word!

  • Somehow I just keep picturing a witch with messy hair when they talk about the woman. But they didn't burn her so I must be a bit off.

  • @NorseWarriorKing witches were hung, drown, burned, decapitated, dragged, pulled, and sometimes even piked. it all mattered about what was at hand, and what her "witchcraft" crimes had been.

the mose gruesome i know of is a single account in which (in england i think. maby in salem.. i dunno) the common folk placed a witches head in a knoose and tied the other end to a rock.. while her body was affixed to a cross, then launched the rock into a lake via catapault.

  • @PUNKROCKINTHISSHIT Hmm, you learn something new every day.

  • @NorseWarriorKing Same xD

  • ahhhhhh wow.

  • remind me not to get on your badside :P

  • Fucking creepy.

  • @rufusandburne i call you sir a liar. atleast in america anyway. that sort of crime would have given you a life sentance, or atleast a 30 year sentance, and a life on parole, which is also a felony, felons may not own fire arms, computers, and may not access the internet.

  • @PUNKROCKINTHISSHIT Than god i live in the United Kingdom!

  • This song makes me sad and gives me goosebumps. I think its possibly about infanticide, or a woman unable to cope. The river Saile is possible the river swan in Dublin. If anyone knows more or has info on date written please message me. Blessed Be. May they rest in peace.

  • ... only "possibly" about infanticide?

  • @Setarcos22 yes it is about infanticide, river Salach, or the poddle as its known today

  • I sing this song at work all the time. It's totally nonsensical but i love it

  • My god Ronnie's voice is amazing. He is simply irreplacable. As are Luke, Ciarain and lets not forget bobby.

  • Ronnie's voice... is... god's ??? DAAMN!!! powerful and mighty voice!! i love it

  • why??????????????

  • I love the DUBLINERS

  • My nan used to sing this to me as a kid, lyrics arent very nice though. Fond memories of nan singing it though

  • great song amaison

  • VERY nice. Not :S

Glad you decided not to put picx with this :S

  • My Granny used to sing this to me when I was a baby, it's one of my first memories-there's an unPC upbringing for you!!

  • E ver iver chimney sweeper had a wife and couldnt keep her....

  • A children's song, sung by Dublin children, while playing in the street. and

the message is about trying to cope with children alone on your own is usually disastrous

  • No it isnt its about Dubliners undue concern about rual affairs???

  • Dublin was originally called Dubh Linn meaning Black Pool. This treacle blackness was carried in by the river Poddle which was once known as the 'Tiber' and was also known as the River Salach (dirty river), which is the origin of the children's song "Down by the river Saile".

  • LOL!!! this song was told to children by their parents just to instill fear of the countryside in them, river Tiber is in italy!!!???

  • Tiber is akin 2 the Celtic root-word dubr, "water" add a similar word thats almost a pun dubh black & u get 2 words for the price of 1. When I say the river Puddle was once known as the 'Tiber' & was also known as the River Salach, these where merely slang names,& not 2B taking serious, The fact that there's a river in Italy call the Tiber & an expression Swimming the Tiber adds 2 the humour, for more reasons than 1.

As 4 instilling fear in children of the countryside, thats pure twaddle.

  • Right im fed up trying to be nice to you, ur obviously as thick as two short planks, put this into the utube search engine and Ronnie Drew will explain it to u himself perhaps u will believe him, AMADAN!!!....."Weile Waile - The Dubliners o Donoghues pub"

  • Ronnie Drew was born 8 miles outside of Dublin city, in 1934 and if he wants to believe city people have it in for him, then he like you did not understand all the words, good drinker though, and more power to his elbow.

If your going to deviate in the form of insults i.e. Tick as two short planks, I can only assume you just want to be right. And if you want to apologise, then thats for your benefit alone.

Proverb:- Because he who utters the first insult admits he's lost the argument.

  • Comment removed

  • comments are for arguments, know ur facts dont argue, if someone else thinks they know argue back, democrary man!!

  • How many special childrens street songs would be lost forever, but for the Dubliners,(late Ronnie Drew Group) , the Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem and his mother, the Fureys, and many others. The children's street songs and the folk songs of Ireland , Scotland,England and Wales are held safe in our hearts because of them, so thanks to them all, and may God bless them and smile gently down upon them!! We,the lovers of Celtic music, will never ever forget them!!!

  • no this is a childres song that dublin children used to sing in his day, its not anti anything. except stabing babbys hearts :).

  • The kid's voices make this version a bit creepy

  • I think that's the idea of the song. IIRC, these songs were created as propoganda to frighten people from Dublin moving to the outskirts of the city. Not 100% though.

  • I was just watching the Dubliners Dublin DVD and Ronnie Drew says that exact thing.

  • Yeah, thought that... Dubliners Dublin is the DVD right?

  • Yeah

  • @lreland1

although thats the contemporary meaning this draws from folklore 2

  • A bit? Iv hsd Nightmares

  • lol

  • @HaulAwayJoe u right im to scared to turn round

  • When Ronnie Drew hits the low note on the end of this song wow terrific.. What a great singer
