I agree NKVD was horrible & most Soviet Soldiers did not know who they are at and during that the war, they all just wanted an end to it. There is a difference - the NKVD were killing their political opponents among their own people - that's internal strife and tragedy but none of your business, really. The SS were killing everybody wto make for the Liebensraum who was not German. That's a lot more people. By 1945 the USSR lost 25-40 million, mostly civilians. Most civilians in Germany were actually killed not by the NKVD but by the Allies bombing raids.

That's a very good movie. I saw in in January in Polish TV. It was a debate after that - it says on the end of the movie, when we can see a Red Army, that those boys went to liberate Poland and half a million of the died. Many people here in Poland say that they wasn't liberating anyone and that the Russian soldiers were even worse than the Germans. Where the true lies - I don;t know.

Secondly, they wanted to take revenge on the Germans, quite understandably. The Russian commissariat wanted Poland to satisfy its own expansionist policies. The same reason the Germans wanted it.

No. I had too many relatives die in that war to call for more violence. What I meant was that while human rights abuses in Germany post-war on the part of the Russians were sad (they happened on the part of the other allies too, and were also sad), and the Russians would have furthered their cause more by being humane, people focus on the atrocities too much and on German atrocities not enough. I know people who know Russians were brutal but had no idea the Germans were as well. That's bad.
