I was recently brought back to this clip by some singers...it was not used as a positive reference on how to sing or perform spirituals. Thank you universe for conformation!! heehee!!!
this is an arrangement by Rev Nolan Williams, and this version is orginal to Metropolitan baptist, even recorded before 2001 on a ministy cd. Im sure there are several versions of the song. The original arrangement had a musical arrangment and a prose by senor servant Dr. H Beecher Hicks Jr.
My choir in Cincinnati, Ohio ain't never heard of no Nolan Williams and we've been singin this song for years. I'm not sayin he didn't... I'm just confused on how we got it in 2001 at the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses Midwest Regional in Cincinnati. Then my church choir took it form there and we've been singin it ever since.
Lol. you're right, I am Right... Real Musicians know that there are SEVERAL arrangements of pieces so classic as the Done made my vow. Even non musicians know that...
Here is my take on this particular music ministry. They can sing, they can sing very well, but for this type of song, they didn't sing it properly. There was no blend at all in any portion of the song, meaning the tones were not balanced and for that to occur the choir members have to listen to each other while they're singing and not sing over each other but with each other. In regards to the end, every soprano who can sing 1st soprano doesn't mean they are a true 1st soprano.
Very interesting take. I think that they did well for a church choir and I am usually pretty critical. I did think that some tenor was WAY too close to the mike, but outside of that it was ok. I think as music ministries go in the Washington DC area, MBC is in the top 5.
i do that all the time! i love musical theater though. this kind of stuff is too stuffy to me. i love the discipline that it requires (when done well of course) and i love what spirituals represent historically, but it's just not my complete cup of tea! sing on chirren!
i greatly applaud their attempt! the tenors were blaring and their balance was quite off. i love this song though. sang it for years! but they are a church choir! i still love it!
You obviously know NOTHING about the shaping, and style of presentation when it comes to spirituals! This choir is taught and trained by one of America's Greatest Ministers of Music...Hence, if the tenors were too loud for you, turn your volume down, and while you do that, goto your local college and attempt to earn a degree in music performance, then listen to this piece again!
Why so sensitive? That must've been your mother who couldn't quite hit the last note at the end. The tenors were SHOUTING...case closed! I have worked with wonderful teachers and trainers over the years, one of them being THE John Rutter. I am a BFA candidate in school(prev music edu major). My opinion of the tenors was just that, MINE! They could use a listen in using their head tone!!! The sternum isn't the only resonator that we have! MUAH! And any ear could hear that last note...sub-par!!!
and i pray to God that you aren't saying that the soprano who sang the descant was flat...then again you probably don't even know what soprano, descant, or flat means!
...and...Training a choir is one thing, but redundantly rehearsing a choir is something altogether different! Many of the singers had an "east to west" technique when pronounceing their words. Look at their positioning and body posture! Why is Doc a part of your screen name? Please go look up the Hogan Chorale's performance of Elijah Rock and you will see the beauty of execution that they are known for...and his soprano at the end soars into her notes versus struggling to get the top of them!!!
oh, lord boy! lol....you're not smart! this is a church choir...THEY'RE AMAZING! Get over yourself, you are not degreed in music obviously! I, on the other hand hold a doctorate, 2 honorary, and 1 earned. you could learn alot from this group...your group will never sound this well!
does honorary means you went to a lot of rehearsals! ha! sorry that you can't accept the fact that someone's opinion of this choir's performance is a little less endearing than yours! webster defines what i recall a descant being..."An ornamental melody or counterpoint sung or played above a theme." nothing said about compromising tone quality. no, i don't have a doctorate in music, but i know what sounds good and what good technique produces. they're still too LOUD! where is their blend?!?!?
this is a church choir...not a chorale, or school chorus! you are an idiot! shut up!!! oh, and honorary means that the institution whom you recieve it from believes that you are as worthy.
oh yeah...it's still not earned...it's "honorary"...either way, it's not quite the same as those who have suffered through their actual programs...i know a few people who have done the work and they tend to frown upon honorary doctorates!!! but do you! i'm over it!!! scream on with your choir buddy! thank God for the vow...is it to Him or to stupidity...we'll know in the end! lol! you're fun!!!
those degrees you're proclaiming are a mess! and they are from what institution of higher learning?!?!? what do you have published? i would love to read it since you have a doctorate!!! please let me know. i will purchase it!!! maybe you can teach me something other than the fact that you seem to be above reproach!!!
no..you're the mess really! i simply shared an opinion and you jumped all over a brother! how in the world do you handle the professional world of performance and entertainment if you can't take a critique!!! that speaks rather poorly of your ability to understand that everyone doesn't appreciate the same thing that do, with the same intensity!!!
Guys.....this arrangement was written by Nolan Williams....not Moses Hogan.....my dad taught this arrangment to his college choir...and the sheet music says NOLAN WILLIAMS...give the man his credit...lol...
I wish they had done the whole song. :-(

Very nice rendition of this song. I also like the fact that he continued to stay true to the orginal song.
