I personally do not like the way the LQ1 was made. Thats just me personally. (Maybe cause i have an L67 in mine) But no matter how the motor is built. you put up higher numbers so you are the winner. Good job!! Gotta love your fiero! :)
I've been trying to make up my mind to swap in my 87... LQ1 or L64...? Love those rev's though. It seems to me the LQ1 is what all the GT's should have come out with stock. I'd really like to see you post some 1/8 & 1/4 mile passes!...????

Where did you get the headers from? or did you make your own? the only LQ1 headers I can find are from Milzy, and they are $1,000 and only fit 96-97 heads, or was your engine a 96?
probably a stupid question but do fieros have power steering atleast? i mean theyre cool in all but i mean they should have power steering its just i was wondering since theyre kinda old haha
Crap...would it be hard to install a power steering system in it..or even possible? lol or would it just be easier to get a still cool but newer 2 seater kinda car...like an mr2 or S2000 or something? nd thanks for your info and help: )
@krazycardude u really dont need it. i suppose u could, but i wouldnt. maybe on the 84s, they tend to rip the wheel out of uf ur hand when u hit a bump. but even then my mom drove my 84 when i had it with no problem. my 88 is a lot less dificult tho and im 16. my opinion, u really dont need it. hope that help s with ur decision.
@krazycardude you can do it sure, you need a power steering pump obviously and some hydraulic tubing and either a corvette ZR1 or a 4th gen V8 (not a v6) camaro or a chevette.. those are the only ones i know of working and they do need to be modified slightly to get the right fit, the ZR1 has a pretty aggressive steering ratio so i wouldn't recommend it but i've heard of the chevette and 4th gen camaro V8 racks doing well hope it helps
the mr2 cant compete with a fiero in its league, not even for price. and im sure the fiero will be a valuable vintage collectors car in the near furture. the s2000? i dont know alot about imports like that lol. but they are a dime a dozen for sure. the rack and pinion of the fiero isnt really as bad as you think anyway... the later the fiero the better the steering and everything else. good luck!
@armylyfe an mr2 doesnt need to compete with the fiero cuz it can beat it pretty easily if enough money is put into a proper build. thats why the mr2 lost its badging as the poor mans sports car to the fiero.
@krazycardude dude i drive my Fiero everyday, turning without power steering is easy unless your stopped. and even then, unless your an utter weakling its not that difficult. besides, the lack of power steering has benifits, such as lighter weight, and more accurate control of the steering and a better feel of the road. some power steering systems suck and arent very predictable, the manual steering on a Fiero makes it much better to drive on a windy road.
@5Bulldawg0 Personally, I find manual steering in a fiero to be VERY easy. I've gotten in some powersteering cars after being in a fiero and going "what the fck..."
But as to "feel of the road". Allow me to emphasize.
Ever been driving in a fiero? Hit a turn on a semi slick street. You WILL feel the wheel get wobbly/loose when the front wheels start to lose traction. That even goes for FWD cars too.
@psychoninja911 My wife has a Scion TC, with very wide tires... It's almost impossible to know when you have loss of control until you realize you're sliding straight instead of turning.
I know, why not just drive slower? Why worry about pavements and the slight moment before your car loses control?
Well, I don't do it around others, an I enjoy challenging myself daily :)
@psychoninja911 Ever been driving in a Fiero? Yes its WHAT I OWN hahaha I drive it every day. and I know you will feel the wobble and looseness when the front wheels start to loose traction, that is why I said it gives you more accurate control and a better feel of the road, because you CAN feel what is going on with the front tires, that feeling is a good thing. Idk if you were agreeing or arguing with me...lol but my point is that the lack of power steering in the Fiero is a plus. lol
@5Bulldawg0 Agreeing, 100%. I really don't like powersteering cars. Especially when the power steering fails. It's worse than a car that originally didn't have power steering.
The turbo is an off the shelf Garrett GT35R. Dual ball bearing, water cooled, T4 housing with a 3" V-band discharge. It sits above the transmission, and below the driver's side decklid vent. The tranny is the stock Getrag 282 5-speed, with stock diff. The suspension is also stock.
As far as money? I'm not even sure, I don't care either. I do it because it's my hobby and I love it, not because it's cost effective, cheap, or profitable. Because it isn't. At all. I'd say about $8000 total, including the car. But all of the labor is mine.
did you pull turbo out of something else or custom order it? and where did you put it? there's not really much space in there as it is let alone with a V6 DOHC in there. i'm not criticizing at all, it's an awesome car. i bet it goes like a raped ape. did you put a limited slip on it too? what's the tranny? suspension?

krazycardude 2 years ago
nope. not even power assist.
But the car is sooo rear heavy the steering is not too bad.
But it sucks when the front tires lose traction when you stomp on the gas and try to make a corner.

left foot braking will trim out the understeer while turning.
Try experimenting with. (somewhere safe)

6600. The tune was Godawful, so it wasn't too rev happy. I consistently turn the motor to 7500rpm now that the tune is much better.

It all depends. Same as any other motor swap really. It was pretty straight forward, though I did a lot of custom work, and didn't cut any corners.
nishiki18 3 years ago
that must be a fun ride. How much did the swap cost, and was it str8 forward?
