Why isn't this man "out there" night after night making millions of dollars? What a voice. Never heard a better one belt this type of stuff out. One of my favorite songs ever since I first heard it in either '66 or '67. joel in tucson
This isn't the real Bobby who recently died. This is Ben Moore who joined the band after Bobby left the group. Ben used the name Bobby Purify when performing often. But RIP to the original Bobby whose full name was Robert Lee Dickely. He died Dec 29th, 2011.
I heard he has passed on the radio. He is another RnB great goin on thru the pearly gates. He is in the best company now, and will be missed.. Its nice to have this video to see him here, when we want to. I love this song, thank you.
For everyone's information (from that era), there's no such thing as original band, maybe an original member or two but for one to say the original band? Come on, give me a break, not even the Rolling Stone who are one of the most recognized bands of all time consist of original members.
PS: Don't need to read a book to know what a little common sense can do!
@CumbiaCowboy Quite a few of the orig. stones are out there still..at least more than "normal" for a band out there working since the early 60's. Heard Stone's bassist Bill Wyman on the radio the other day...a cool guy who's really into metal detecting. But I know what you're saying. My bet is that this was originally cut with a studio band....probably all cats that most of us would know the names of, if you're into music. I sure would like to find out who was on the orig. cut. Anybody know?
@akebo92 Oh yes he does! If I'm correct, he's the same drummer that was with them from the start, and was
even on the original recording of this. Again, this could be wrong, but it's the way I understand it. At any rate, the guy does have his share of soul. Probably one of those ol' Memphis or southern cats who's paid his musical dues over and over again, schlepping his equipment out of smoky bars at 3 am...driving home dead tired.
@WickedTornado: That's not the original drummer. Gene Chrisman was the drummer. He was with the legendary American Studios band in Memphis. I recommend the book "Memphis Boys" by Roben Jones if you want to know the full story of that band. It's nothing short of astonishing what they achieved.
@tomthefunky Then who is the guy drumming now? I made my statement based on info that was told to me by someone who should have known. No big deal. But whoever this cat is...he's dead on it. BTW....whatever happened to Gene Chrisman? Is he still alive? Thanks joel in tucson
@WickedTornado: I don't know who this drummer is. Gene's retired now. He always hated the road but the original band still plays occasionally. Remember The Highwaymen back in the 80's? Cash, Willie, Waylon and Kristofferson? Well, Gene and the band can be seen in the live concert video they made. You can find it on youtube.
They are also the band on King Curtis's "Memphis Soul Stew". Very few people know that. Their list of smash hits are endless. Check the book out.
If you like this type of REAL SOUL SINGING he sounds a lot like my man CLARENCE CARTER who has always been blind / will some one please post the LONG ORIGINAL VERSION of "TAKE IT ALL OFF" / also. "STROKIN' and "LOVE BUILDING" so others can be introduced to the kinda real music / sexy & soulful music black Americans have always enjoyed
When a song is YOUR SONG ! Rarely does anyone else ever sing it better / another great performance of a beloved SOUL CLASSIC by the original artist / THANKS FOR SHARING !!
In B flat it would be E flat to F not F to G. Anyway it is a 1,2, 3, 4, 5 progression. I think this one here is in A if my guitar is tuned to concert e.
I almost forgot about this song until I heard the Elton John Version this weekend. Can't wait to play it with the guys. Keyboard can cover the horns the base line is a gas and the drums are right in the pocket and with a few little guitar fills in between the chords should sound cool. B flat, c minor, d minor, F and G should get it done. Be tough to cover Bobby's vocals though.
@silverlady1000 Hi Yes, I got to know Bobby pretty well in the 70`s here in England on tour I think 76, his real name is Ben Moore and I believe he is now blind with Glucoma, I used to feel really proud, I travelled around the Baileys night clubs with them and Bobby would dedicate "when a man loves a woman" to me when he was on stage. They were a great time in my life.
James and Bobby Purify had two other great songs that received air time back in the day (1967) , "Wish You Didn't Have To Go," and "Let Love Come Between Us." Interestingly there was never a REAL Bobby Purify, but two different singers used the Purify name in the group. The first one was James' cousin who had a different last name. When he left the group Bobby Moore, the gentlemen singing in this video, took his place. Bobby lost his eyesight to glaucoma and is now blind.....
I just broke out dancing by myself when I heard this after all these years hahahahahahaha darn he sounds better now than in the original!!!!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!!
And while I'm at it, props to that drummer...whoever he is. The cat picked all the right equipment...his snare is perfectly tuned....the cymbals ideal for this song. His background vocals are dead on. Wonder who he is, and his pedigree. Amazing to think the guy standing next to you pumping gas into his car can be a one bad mofo in his realm. Joel in Tucson
Listen to him lay it down!! Damn...this bro still has it. Actually, I think he sounds better than in '66, I loved this song since I first heard it as a 6th grader in tiny little dusty Marana Arizona. Surfed into this one just on pure luck. Favorited it after hearding it for 5 seconds, Thanks to whomever posted this. Joel in Tucson
This guys sounds awsome, even better than the old days. He puts that soul right in there, taking no prisoners these guys still have it in every sense of the word. Right on!!! u da man!! u da man!!!! Can I get an amen yowl???? or a hallaluyah ??
Does anyone know where this performance took place? This is Ben Moore also known as Bobby Purify. He lives in Pensacola Florida and he is one of the greatest talents from that city. Man, he still sounds awesome.
