It's very cool how that was achieved, however I wish it were only used for the video game. The CGI characters were pretty unconvincing in the movies. I understand WHY it was used, but I can't see why another method or some more research couldn't have made it more realistic. Just my opinion.

Cause even many years after, digital imaging still isn't as realistic as you would want it to be and the movies wouldn't be out yet.

motion capture is when you put little markers on people's bodies and have a lot of cameras record the action. the markers are then used as a reference for animation. it makes animation look a lot more realistic than if the animators had just done everything by hand. it's used in pretty much everything that involves computer animation now.

...not as the reference but as a motion data information which you can import to the software for animation.

Once imported, sufficient information is beeing removed to improve simplicity so animators can add some costum motions by editing animation curves.

@amitkatz your definition is kinda off, body markers is one way of doing motion capture, also the markers are not used as a reference guide by animators, the points gets processed automatically by a tracking application, and in most professional mocap studios they have theirs specialized programs to mostly automate the process.
