This is not so good for teaching young children, because the song is too fast (words pronounced too fast) at the beginning, especially for ESL young students.
@miaselly You're absolutely right. This song is not for TEACHING the colors. Once a child knows his colors, however, it can be used for reinforcement, for word recognition, or, as it was in my own case, for a concert or kindergarten graduation.
@michellexespio ok I had to post this.. . A rainbow is composed of the entire spectrum of colors of visible light, from the longest wavelength, red, to the shortest wavelength, violet. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. 7 colors of the Rainbow. That is the 7 colors of the rainbow in order.
There are no words in the English language that rhyme with the words orange, purple, or silver. If I don't miss my guess, it seems there is some sort of bias against colors here. Do you think this is considered racist, i.e., is our language itself, literally racist?
Hint: if you think the above paragraph was at all constructed in seriousness, you are probably a racist. AND, you're biased against humor, which is against the laws of gravity.
@Grancie48 Well, they were for some time, including when I was growing up, but that had more to do with Newton and others wanting seven colors to match the major musical scale. There really isn't much reason to separate indigo out otherwise, and indeed it's being phased out of modern science textbooks. While this ruins a perfectly good mnemonic, it makes sense.
or maybe permission to use the video in my lesson. We're not going to teach these lessons, it's just for a grade right now, but we've had to promise that when our first weeks of school, in our own classroom, come around, we are supposed to teach this Family Thematic Unit to create a classroom community. I saw this video and thought it would be a great supplementary activity to my part of the lesson plan. Please let me know ASAP. Thanks :)
Hello, I'm an early childhood major and I'm working with a group to put together a first weeks of school thematic unit plan about Family. We're tying the concept of diversity, creating a classroom family, and learning class rules & procedures for the year. One of my lessons has a lot to do with how our differences unite us. I'm using the book "The Crayon Box That Talked" and other crayon related activities. I was wondering if I could have permission to include the lyrics of this song
yup a good way to remember is Roy G. Biv for Red, Orange, Yellow, Gree, Blue, Indigo and violet which is ordered in decreasing wavelength (increasing frequency).
@sydney2010ist It's important to respect others preferences and choices and to not ridicule or demean them. It's all part of your becoming a person of character and worth.
@GamersChannels Not starting a argument or anything, but American is based of the original british language with a few words modified. It is orignally Colours. Americans took the "U" out as it is un-pronounced.
I sometimes catch myself singing this tune. My two year old absolutely loves it. Maybe I'm being a little overly emphasizing but I think this song is just as one of the lyrics speaks 'beautiful and bright'! Thank you.
@rihannarocks6 Sorry, pink, gray, and tan didn't make the cut, just the 8 basic crayon box colors. Besides, I guess you could argue that they're just shades of red, black, and brown.
It makes me think back at my time at kindergarden and primary school time. I still love the songs we sang there together and sometimes humm them. Maybe i'll try to humm this one too later. It sounds comforting and is good for teaching little kids the colours.

Those who criticize your singing must have computers with cheap audio. Your singing is quite nice. Not sure what child age this song targets but my opinion is that there is not good separation of the colors and not distinct enough labeling. In the beginning of the song there is labeling of colors but runs through the tutorial too fast. The color labeling sort of flows together too much instead of pausing and emphasizing each. A child seeing this will memorize word 'colors' b4 the color names.
Still loving it Gracie! My son is now 2.5 years and has been a long term fan of your song. I sing it to him almost daily and now he sings it like this "colours, colours, .... be.... world... see...colours, colours... " leaving out all the middle words LOL
Im a preschool teacher, and my kids know silver, gold, gray, teal and peach as well, among other non standard crayon box colors. We also cover shapes such as trapezoid, arch, crescent moon, star, heart, hex and octagons, as opposed to the basic shapes like circle square rectangle triangle etc. They love this video too btw!
@richardthewriter This song, written for primary grade children, only covers the colors found in a standard crayon box as well as those found in the rainbow.
