Sandman would be a good example of a comic book series that was not misogynistic and in fact over half of its readers were women, and that was almost 25 years old!
"my wifes a feminist, i dont know why she married me im barely a man" lmao gotta love kevin smith. but the woman to his left is pissing me off. what the serious fuck is she chatting about
There is no cute sense of the word here. Contrary to the tea and cucumber sandwiches stereotype, we're just much more at ease at being rude to people. It's why our news and chat show interviews are generally more cutting.
winterson doesnt really understand the comic world-superheroes arent the only genre in that world and even within superheroes there are several different sub genres
I think it's silly to call a violent woman/ girl a "feminist" character it has nothing to do with it, it's not the kind of empowermend I would want for women. However more inspiring than the female characters that just star in comics for the sex, or to make the male characters look good. This is a very funny and interesting book about the subject, but it also made me very sad at times, because it reveals how the comicbookwriters and the audiance want women to be... jikes!!!
I agree with Jeanette Winterson, saying "but comics are violent and women are misrepresented anyway" is bullshit, they can and have done way better than that.
God, the lady on the right is annoying. She cant see past her own opinion, or take on-board Kevin and Natalies very valid points on the subject.
The violence in Kick Ass is extreme. Get over it. I've seen the film a few times, and so far haven't felt the need to re-create any of the violence for my own pleasure. I find the Hit-Girl character fantastic and a refreshing new girl superhero. She's witty and easily the best fighter in the film.
@sidekickdaz Naw, that's just Jeanette Winterson's take on feminism. She doesn't see a woman taking on a man's role as a feminist maneuver, especially if the man's role is defined in terms of violence. In fact, she would probably argue that defining masculinity in terms of violence is extremely sexist and offensive to men, and thus, an anti-feminist sentiment from the get go. Though I do agree that misogyny probably wasn't the right word, in fact, misandry would probably be more appropriate.
the woman on the right pisses me off! Kick Ass is the most fun/beautiful/amazing/sad/empowering/brilliant piece of fiction ive ever seen or read. i may be ott, but thats what the film and the comic did for me.
@vikramkrishnan : Shakespeare didn't live today, and if anything his articulation of misogyny was more skillful. At least his female characters, though disturbed, had psychological depth. You can't say that about most comic book characters, be they male or female.
this is funny, the woman on the left talking about mesogeny and stereotypes lol it's the comic world bitch!! lol at least she's not a crazy ass feminist : /

Hit-girl IS the hero in kick-ass! The main character is just a blank slate.

Misogyny - not the word to describe Kick Ass.

Shakespeare is also misogynistic . Think Ophelia, Lady Macbeth etc. Does this woman want to criticize him.
