Hey guys, got a ticket in my glove box at 126 mph on I-24 in my 1998 2.8 Z3 Roadster. I saw the trooper and was shutting down when my "cloaking" detector went off so I'm thinking I was well over 130. Only modification is a K&N intake and of course Z rated tires.
are they that good? Im dying to get one, maybe my parents will give me one for my b-day, but what happens if i crash? like, are there replacement parts?
My Z3 still has the upper hand of me. I've taken it up to 110mph, I then chickened out. Must of been the Sheriff Deputy I was coming up from behind. Whats the fastest you've gone in your Z3?
I hit roughly 135 on a highway and was doing it for about 10 seconds until I hit the part of the road where trees were lined up and the road started to curve slightly. The trees flying by like they did made me realize how fast I was actually going and it scared the shit out of me so I let off quick
I'd buy Audi as a luxury car, but considering I love 'sports driving,' the bmw is clearly the better choice for me.
I really like how the Audi TT looks, but the small engine on it turned me away. Either way, you're driving some wonderful german engineered cars. Making The Fuehrer proud. ;)
I really love everything BMW, but honestly, tiptronic is a total joke. Not only does it take literally seconds for it to shift, it just doesn't feel the same as an SMG, and feels nothing at all like a manual because of the slow response. BMW fixed this on the latest 3 series, but all auto Z3's are pretty much for cruising only, because they're not that fun to drive.
Just get a manual and you will be fine. Test it out before purchasing, but honestly, I love my '00 2.3 Z3 manual. I'm trading it up for an '01 M3, but I will miss my very good looking roadster very much.
No, I love my Z3 more than anything, but my brother already has 2 BMW's and is looking to sell his '01 M3 to buy a Porsche. His price is reasonable, so I thought it would make a nice upgrade. Performance is awesome on Z3's, they're awesome cars, and they drive like they're on rails.
Yeah i just picked up my z3 today. Spent a few hours applying wax - thoroughly. Haha. It drives beautifully. A bit heavier/slower to accelerate than my RX-8, but this car just 'feels' better. Absolutely amazing.
Assuming I don't come across any mechanical problems, i'd recommend this car to anyone who likes to drive just for the hell of it.
I loved my z3. It was such a great car. I would've kept it if it were a manual.
To the new owner of the Z3, congrats on the purchase. If you're thinkign of doing some aggressive driving, I would check the subframe, the Z3 is known to have subframe faliures. Reason why I sold my z3.
It is a little heavier than the rx-8, but it's got torque ^^
I wouldn't say that I'm an aggressive driver, I'd just say that everyone else is a pussy driver. :P
Average redneck driver where I live is 'very good' at driving fast in a straight line. Get to a curve or a turn and instead of pulling out a little drifting action, they slow down to what my grandma drives.
But basically, the Z3 has me sold on BMW's as a whole. I don't think i can go to a non-BMW now. Even if I upgrade sometime soon, it'll be to another one.
Yup, I highly regret buying an Audi, I miss BMW so much, the cars are sooo balanced. The luxurious-ness, and the sorta grunty agressive-ness is something you can't find in any other car.
If you're not an experienced driver, I would not recommend a real wheel drive car with a 2.8liter engine in it..
I drove a 1.8 and if I stept on the throttle (even when its not raining) the tail wil slide. It was a fun car, but I had a couple of years expierience before I could do crazy with this car :)
@krnz3 I'm 17. and have 10,000 miles under my belt. I have driven everything from a ford bronco to a porsche boxster s. I've gotten up to 145 in my uncles (soon to be my own) LS400. closed course, of course.
age doesn't equal skill. I could out-drive most 40 year olds, and im not saying that to brag. just saying it to say it.
the service guy at bmw told me that if anyone tells me my z3 drives it like its on rails then they never really "drove" it. I don't know if thats true but....one time I was turning on the highway from a side road coming from a stop sign.....I launched at around 2500 while turning....I ended up doing a 360 spin in place on accident. I was shitting on myself but my friend was enjoying every bit of it ha.
Ya know now that I look back, I realize that the Z3 was a fantastic car, but it did have suspension problems. I got a BMW Z4 3.0 rather than an M3, and I'm stunned how much stiffer the suspension is. The Z3 is easy to have a blast in by burning out or skidding around a corner, but the Z4 is literally glued to the road. I have tried, and it is VERY difficult to get the rear tires to come loose unless accelerating hard. While it's easy to do doughnuts in the Z3...
the balance can't be that much better seeing as the z3 was virtually a 50/50 weight distribution...however im sure the suspension and handling is better on the z4
I'm sure in large part the reason you can't get the z4 to break lose is because of all the added weight.
Which is why I'm selling my 2.8 right now and looking for an 01 m roadster. I'd personally rather then 315hp in a z3 then in a z4. Plus I think the quads on the back of the z3 is the sexiest ass alive
Actually the Z4 is around 100lbs lighter than the Z3 was, but I agree with you about the look of the rear of the Z3. I've come to fall in love with the looks of my Z4 too, though the front still looks just a bit odd, the sides are beautiful and the back is sweet, if a bit Bangle-ish.
I love the sound of a BMW straight 6!

Cool vid man. I just bought a z3 1.9 and love it. Not as much power as the inline 6 ones but it's a great cruiser car. ;-)

Krz3, do you have a re-programmed chip installed?
You pushed it into the red and the govenor did not kick in.
My 2.5L kicked in around 6,250...but it was still pulling hard!
No longer an issue now with a Dinan Chip.

that's what tiptronic shifting is for. Fun of manual, but the safety of automatic in canada's harsh winter driving conditions. :|

I drove the car for three days before I ended up in the river with it :s
I would reccomend a front wheel drive hatchback for first car.

2910 for z3
3042 for z4
thats why the the 2.5 that produces 192 hp hit sixty in 6.9
verses the 2.8 z3 with 192 that hits it in just over 6 flat
jmd11185 3 years ago
that can't be a stock 2.8. You would have to switch gears at around 60 coming out of second. On your thing it went to about 70
jmd11185 5 years ago
Well, it's an automatic if that makes a difference...
