OMGOSH.. can't you imagine sitting at an outside cafe in Vienna, having coffee and a pastry and listening to a strolling violinist playing this? His voice makes me conjur up that image and I wanna go to Vienna now!
Oh, how wonderful! Thank you so much for posting this one! Richard Tauber put such beauty in all the songs he's performed! I so enjoy his singing! Also "I'm In Love With Vienna" sung so beautifully by Richard! Love, Liz
IT IS SO POIGNANT, 1935 IS THE BEGINNING OF TROUBLE IN EUROPE, AND WHO BETTER TO SING THE SONG WHICH IS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE OF THE CITY OF VIENNA. HE WAS ATTACKED IN 1933 BY HITLERS "BROWNSHIRTS", I SUSPECT ANYONE COULD TELL HOW LIFE WAS BEGINNING TO CHANGE.
RICHARD NEVER SAW HIS PARENTS AFTER 1939, ALTHOUGH HE WAS SINGING UP TO 1938 JUST BEFORE THE ANSCHLUSS OF AUSTRIA, HE ESCAPED BY THE SKIN OF HIS TEETH BACK TO ENGLAND AND ONLY RETURNED IN 1947.
My father was a big fan of this song and recording. But I too was drawn to its sweet old world melody and tender performance. The Viennese are rightly proud of this wonderful song. One can go to the town hall on a Saturday night and hear an evening of musical performance, with this song performed 2-3 times.
I remember those days well; here in America back then, we had the protection of the oceans! We don't enjoy that protection in the age we live in today. We can enjoy our music, however, can we not? Thanks again, Liz
Beautifully sung -- and very "romantic" w/great deal of charm (an Italian would be Tito Schipa--but not the voice, Schipa didn't possess enough power-- Tauber really has excellent middle register)--TX for posting, again!
Sofiahaus Viena ciudad amada por mi maravillosa madre. Mi admiración por quien fuera vienesa por siempre aunque nunca regresara a su tierra natal
