  • just me or is it too slow? ._.

    kissin rocks anyway

  • @phguitar2010 no, it's not you - it's him. It IS too slow, although the fans will surely disagreee (the master can't go wrong).

And no - he does NOT rock at least not my musical world - try Pletnev, IMO the best Rach 3 around

  • @47viviane actually the greatest master of rach 3 is horowitz.

  • @phguitar2010 FOR YOU, you forgot to add that for you Hororrwitz plays it best. This is all about individual liking, what apeals to the listener - nothing objective with art

  • @47viviane no, its not FOR ME, i'm telling this because he received the title "Master of Rachmaninov" and won grammy's of best rach 3 player =)

  • @phguitar2010 oops - of course if THEY sayso then it must be the TRUTH - pardon me if I have my own mind and taste and don't relie on the industrie and their promotion

  • Too bad the sound quality is shit.

  • How old was he here? Very talented young man.

  • can anyone point out a harder song?

  • Так играть может только музыкант с истинно русской душой!

  • @Svetlanasemenyak oh really, Svetlana? I always thought Mr. Kissin has a jewish soul. ;)

Anyway, how "Russian " is that, to come up with such bull...t statement? :(

  • Wonderful performance. Kissin is still young. Hear old masters Horowitz, Rachmaninoff, and Gutierrez - the current master!

  • the only thing that need to be improve is his hair's style i guess.but we love u anyway Kissin.

  • the only thing that need to be improve is his hair's style i guess.but we love u anyway Kissen.

  • I like this version better than Horowitz's. Much respect to him though. Kissin takes his time emphasizing certain parts more

  • good 好棒 好聽

  • Gotta love that 'fro. xDD

  • I'm so glad to find this, and thanks for posting it. I also attended one of the Kissin/Ozawa/BSO concerts (in '93, I guess), during which this video must have been recorded (from the 2nd balcony?). I was living in Boston then, and watching this brought back a lot of memory about my time there. The live recording made during these concerts has been one of my most favorite, but I could never imagine watching the video of this performance.

  • STRANGE CLAPPING!!!

  • chuck norris plays this with one hand. Faster!

  • @kayakbruce1 kissin is chuck norris o_O

  • the first theme is too slow. Too dragged, and over 'musicalized' if you will. but the rest is good!

  • yep, best pupil i ever had :-)

  • Too slow God Damn ! Look at Horowicz !

  • whoever mixed the intro deserves a sugar lump

  • So much of music is interpretation. Many forget that. This is just the way Kissin wanted to play it. He is one of the great pianists of our time, imo.

  • his hands are MASSIVE. Rachmaninoff-like.

  • kissin's rachmaninoffs are always a lil too slow for me

  • The WORST 3-d concerto ever.

  • Kissin can play better than all of us commenting. Combined.

  • @avb20540 have you ever try time yourself with 87 other person."okay get ready guy here come the 32th notes part of 4 minutes long." :P

  • @avb20540 what if Lang Lang and Martha Argerich commented but we don't know its them! 0_o =D

  • @avb20540 BUT I BET THAT I AM A BETTER ARCHITECT THAN HE IS!

  • Well said.

  • @avb20540 Times infinity maybe then to infinity factorial and even thats a stretch of our pianistic ability.

  • He starts too slowly; the orchestra pick up the theme faster.

  • Why does he start the theme slow, then, when the orchestra picks up the theme, they play the theme faster??

  • @kaimartucci

Because that's what the scores asks for. I agree that it was too slow but it was according to the score.

  • @BMX90 I always feels like most scores are too slow.

  • Alexander Lubyantsev is my favorite young pianist, he will be one of the best piano player in this century!!!

  • the acoustics are horrific. In fact Kissin's performances on Youtube are often technically flawed. I hope someone will post some better tapes than this.

  • @mc0558 Just stfu and listen. BIATCH.

  • @1black1small1moon disgraceful, uneducated creep!

  • @mc0558 im more educated then you for sure.

  • @1black1small1moon Really! :--) Not knowing whom I am from the man in the moon, that is truly a remarkable statement.

  • i like it

  • LOL. His fingering at the beginning theme introduction is so weird I actually laughed out loud!!

  • In listening to varioius pianists on YouTube, I have noticed that, while Kissin is as great or even better than most of them, the quality of the recording or of the orchestra or of the conducting, and any variable of these, is worse than that of almost any other pianists appearing here. They are far below the quality of his playing. Kissin needs someone on his staff to control quality right across the board.

  • @mc0558 Excellent post - totally agree with you.

    Evgeny Kissin Fansite.co.uk

  • Just so we know whats happening:

    Theme introduction:

Orchestra- "Why is he going so slow"

Kissin- "Oh god oh god oh god here we go"

    1:44

Orchestra- "Why is he going so fast?!?!?"

    Kissen- "Yeeaaaaaaaahhh!!!!"

  • i like kissins version. it is classic kissin. but my fav is horowitz's performance with ormandy conducting. absolutely magical!

  • Am i the only one who has noticed the size of his hands?!! omg haha how awesome is that!

  • It seems in of silly to complan about how Kissin's style is different than any other pianists when recordings from multiple artists are readily available, thus you can listen to any version whenever you want.

  • This is horrible.

  • Incredible... Upcoming Sunday, me and my brother will be hearing this concerto in Het Concertgebouw - Amsterdam!! I can't wait... I'll try to make a recording aswell!

  • I prefer the version by Jae-Hyuck Cho, actually -- much cleaner and precise. Kissin's is too much rubato. Otherwise the old Horowitz interpretation is a classic.

  • Kissen is wonderful! I do not like the slowness of the opening bars of the first movement, however. It is one of the most haunting opening of any piano concerto and he spoils the effect by being kitchy.

  • @mc0558 but then at 1.37 he takes out and wow is it something to behold.

  • my teacher tells me shit about polyrhythmic stuff. . . . i dont listen and bllyguns should stop bumming his teacher

  • mark o'conner is gay just thought i'd say ;)

  • @TheJgl123 that kid knows what hestalking about

  • the best Rach 3 version played by any pianist is is Sergei Rachmaninov, NO one can copy his style of playing, but their are some pianist who did a great job but will never be as great as Rachmaninov was, R.I.P.

  • @ravenswod Rachmaninov said Horowits played his pieces the way he imagined it should be played, even better than himself.

  • the sounds terrible... when was this recorded?

  • @handycappo way back in 1992 i believe,not positive on that though

  • Kissin is the go-to guy for Rachmaninoff. I wish he'd do the complete Preludes. Heck, I wouldn't even mind if he did my own Symphonic Variations, which is here on YT, but that's like way out in left field. Kissin always gives rock-solid live performances--never seems to make a mistake and he probes the music like few piianists can. What a gifted guy!

  • @JoeTownley Have you heard Biret play Rachmaninov? She has recorded all his piano works. She is one of my favorite interpreters, especially when it comes to the preludes and etudes-tableaux. Although, her concertos aren't as good as some others.

  • @OriginalBasaliskos Yes, she has the 24 Preludes and probably the fastest e-flat minor (my personal favorite) I've heard. Impeccable performances.

  • This is a nice Version but I prefer Martha Argerich's Version...!!!

  • lol it's like he's having sex going forward and back^^

  • the clapping in the beginning is kinda funny its like fua~fua~fua----~

  • Rocky & Kissin: It Just Doesn't Get Any Better ...

  • @ChazOMac sublime ma c'è anche di meglio

  • sublime ma c'è anche di meglio

  • this is insane who knows where the second half of the first movement has gone tho!!?

  • Audio recording courtesy of advanced tin can and string technology.

  • the perfect piano technic

  • carnegie hall?

  • I don't know of any composers who write like this today. I just finished a work for piano and orchestra in the romantic tradition, modeled after Franck's Symphonic Variations that is here on YouTube but I'm the only one I know. Everything I hear by composers today is ultra avant-garde so their audience is very limited. OTOH, I would not be taken seriously by the community-at-large for writing in the traditional style, so the only winners today are Rach, Tchaik, Chopin et.al. Sad.

  • Damn!.. this should be illegal!

  • This guy is a MONSTER !

  • He is the greatest genius in the past 30 years.(∩^ω^∩)

  • Thats very amazing. Im a Rachmaninov Fan and i want to play his 3. Concert. Good Job and well done.

  • There is noone like Rachmaninoff!! My very favorite!! I cannot even begin to comprehend how any composer can write music like this while having to stop & write down the notes!!!! I love the angle of this video how you can see both hands. I love the long fingers & how they just ever so lightly glide over the keys. Amazing!! Beautiful!

  • wow! What a fantastic performance! I am really enjoying learning Rachmaninoff's music at the moment. I have just uploaded some of my youtube videos. Please feel free to listen, comment and rate. Cheers!

  • A bit slow, especially at the start, but I still love how he plays it, beautiful! I wish there was a better quality video of him playing this.

  • Little bit to slow

  • Not that I don't like this recording but I can't believe there aren't any more of Evgeny playing the Rach. 3rd...

  • Stacato handclap in beginnen lol

  • @Underdogpiano haha excellent find sir

  • @Underdogpiano

    lololololol

  • @Underdogpiano LMAO!!!

  • awesome! TY.

  • ugh, he plays such a syrupy performance that I could almost drown in it.

  • Im surprised he started of slow i was expexting him to be like a space ship full blast and then he was like here you go isnt this what you were wating for and i was like yes sir ri thoguht you were holding back

  • 44 people have no concept of talent...

Thumbs WAY UP for this performance!!!

  • good music pianist

  • lo mejor de lo mejor..

  • kissin just sings!!! Brilliant!

  • Is this slow motion? Not nice

  • too slow

  • Heavenly!

  • Sloooow

  • Kissin is nothing more than a virtuoso, and many other less known pianists can play way better than him. I didn't like his performance at all: that was not Rachmaninoff's concerto.

  • @FederSim Oh yeah? really? if you are so good why dont you put up a vid of you playing it better? retarded subhuman brainless maggot

  • @JOHNNYWADTON I didn't mean to insult you, sir. But you didn't have the same courtesy...

  • @FederSim and who on earth are you to judge?? Are you Liszt come back from the grave?

I saw this piece being performed by an outstanding young pianist konstantin shamray and it was simply breath taking.

Kissin's performance is equally as brilliant if not better so I think you should take your comments somewhere else.

    Peace

  • what about allegro ma non tanto did he not understand?

  • What's tempo ???

    Horrible..

  • both are russian but ashkenazy seems to 'understand' rachmaninoff better than kissin does..

    maybe experience plays a role

  • *creak creak*

  • such a beautiful performance with such poor audio quality..... damn it!!!!!!

  • i love you evgeny

  • Mi spiace dirlo ma l'unica persona che suona divinamente questo pezzo è la grandissima Olga Kern....

  • hai torto suonava divinamente ashkenazy

  • what a relief. really needed this after an hour of good ol' bang bang... :-)

  • @Falange2000 The applause at the beginning sounds like bang bang :p

  • @Falange2000 wtf

  • @Falange2000 I thought that was a sexual joke until I watched the video.

  • how long ago was it ?he is so thin here!..

  • i think this tempo is fine.. it makes more musical sense to me..

  • Far too slow in my opinion, it should be allegro, and this isn't.

    Still very well played though.

  • Genius...pure sweet genius!! Vive la Kissin!!

  • Oh my, this is way to slow.

  • I Don't know I think it was intended to be at that speed. I remember hearing it the first time watching the movie "shine" with geoff rush. excellent piece and the movie truely shows how hard it can be to master such an extravagent piece such as this,

  • Dont agree. Beaultiful melodies like that should be played with no hurry. Even than, the pianist has enough keys to play...

  • @claudiogoldman There are six different tempos ona metronome that classify as ALLEGRO. My teachers always tasight me to observe the composer's wishes; it will not do to change an ALLEGRO into an ANDANTE or even ANDANTINO. That being said, Kissin is one of the last real pianists alive.

  • @billyguns2 those who need teaching will never be any good.

  • @TheBudhistpunk That is one of the most incredible statements I have ever read! ALL of the great pianists were taught by master teachers; for example, the list of Rosina Lhevinne's students is legendary. What on earth are you talking about?

  • @billyguns2

    you said pianist.

  • @Blindianboy Where did I say "pianist?" Your response to my comment makes no sense; please explain what you mean by it.

  • @billyguns2 "That being said, Kissin is one of the last real pianists alive"

yes, it was a weak joke, but you should consider investing in a sense of humor.

  • @Blindianboy I have a terrific sense of humor, as anyone who knows me will tell you; that is the problem with a few comments on YouTube; many people assume they know the whole person by a comment that is left. I fail to see the humor in your remark, ans I still fail to understand what you mean by it. You have not explained it.

  • @billyguns2

    pianist sounds like...

  • @billyguns2 - You have to remember, however, that a 'Rachmaninov' allegro or meno mosso is ALWAYS different from a Beethoven allegro- or any other composer. That being said, the pianist has to concentrate on the sound of the particular composer and the piece or movement itself. Most pianists dont realize Rach himself recorded his own concerti several times. His tempi he takes in performance captures his stylistic effects and so forth.

  • @7angels7plagues I just listened to Rachmaninoff's own recording of this opening tempo, which is a true Allegro and moving much faster than Kissin's; are we not to take Rachmaninoff at his word and example?

  • @billyguns2 Yea. Cuz all the other pianists are fake, right?

  • @billyguns2 I agree with your teacher. Kissen is a fabulous pianist, but he looses the magic of this concerto by playing the allegro too slowly. I much prefer Rachmaninov's own concept of what is allegro. Kissen needs to resist that part of him that would make him another Ling Ling, or whatever that Chinese creep is called.

  • @mc0558 Ling Ling, LOL!

  • @billyguns2 You say Kissin is one of the last real pianists alive. Who else do you number in this category (of real pianists)? Which famous pianists do we have today which you discount? Why do you think so much piano playing today has become unreal?

  • @mc0558 The other pianists are merely figments of our imagination.

  • @morphicwraith Ah sodeska!

  • @billyguns2 "Kissin is one of the last real pianists alive"

That's a no no, you r not saying that based on this performance r u?

  • Nice piece, but way too slow, not what Rach intended, in my opinion.

  • Only the biginning is really slow. He flies through the rest of it.

  • this dude's having bad hair day , though his playing is top notch

  • HAHA! Actually that's the way his hair always looked at that time. I'd trade hair with him any day.

  • let me guess ..you are bald ;-)

  • Not bald, but not nearly as much as I used to have. Well, Kissin may have more hair than I do, but at least I can play the piano better -- oh wait... no, he's better than I am on the keys, too... I must have something he doesn't -- oh... I know some great places to park in the Chicago Loop! And on some days, I'd rather have that knowledge than more hair!

  • secret parking places in Chicago ?? NO,,I can't believe it ..that's too much ..man ,, what I wouldn't give for that knowledge ?!!

  • This concert is AMAZING!!!!!! It's very difficult piece!!! and very beautiful!!!

  • reparem na articulação perfeita de Kissin,,,no trecho 1:36

  • yeah right, Islamey is not hard! have you tried it?? haven't a clue.

  • balakirev Islamey is nothard yet it need power, though this piece is an intensive course of notes, power and imaginary!

  • 쩐다 ㅅㅂ

  • today 100 years of being composed this concerto!!

  • At first I thought, nah, too slow, but then I realised that I can actually hear every note. He doesn;t seem to skip notes like some other pianists do

  • The sound quality is too lousy. It's a shame.

  • some people say this piece probably has to one of if not the HARDEST piano pieces ever.

  • I think it is the HARDEST piece to play, and I am Half way through this piece myself - Half way listening to it that is:)!

  • This is really hard piece too but I think Scarbo by Ravel and Islamei from Valakiev are even more difficult than this piece...

  • If anyone wants to see a really great youtube of this supreme concerto, check out Yefin Bronfman's one (in 5 parts with Gergiev conducting)

  • Kissin is awesome, but in his concerto recordings his playing occasionally has the tendency to sound slower than it actually is. Something in his rubato just kills the forward momentum, I noticed the same trait in his Prokofiev Third concerto with Abbado.

I mean Kissin doesn't treat the Rach 3 like a showpiece, but I feel he takes it to the opposite extreme, trying to realize an artistic interpretation with such focus there isn't any excitement left in it.

  • Hes not actually playing the piano. It's just CG.

  • unless you're being sarcastic then no he really did play it man

  • great song! bad hairstyle!

  • Probably takes the "greats" anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months to learn this PIECE...It's NOT a song.

  • I wonder how long does it takes for great piano players such a Lang Lang, Kissing, and Martha Agerich to learn a song like this?

  • It´s not a song lol. It took Volodos 3 days to learn I believe. He considered it easy lol. Dunno about the others but they propably practised more then that.

  • I meant piece. lol

  • dont cruxify this man! please! lol only a error..LOL

  • oh men!! you are so full of s%$t, you are making that up, even the most remarcable pianists think its a hard piece, but i dont think you'll ever understand that, cause you are not a musician i guess

  • Yes I am, and I can find the interview where Volodos claims that he hought it was easy.
