I'm so glad to find this, and thanks for posting it. I also attended one of the Kissin/Ozawa/BSO concerts (in '93, I guess), during which this video must have been recorded (from the 2nd balcony?). I was living in Boston then, and watching this brought back a lot of memory about my time there. The live recording made during these concerts has been one of my most favorite, but I could never imagine watching the video of this performance.
So much of music is interpretation. Many forget that. This is just the way Kissin wanted to play it. He is one of the great pianists of our time, imo.
the acoustics are horrific. In fact Kissin's performances on Youtube are often technically flawed. I hope someone will post some better tapes than this.
In listening to varioius pianists on YouTube, I have noticed that, while Kissin is as great or even better than most of them, the quality of the recording or of the orchestra or of the conducting, and any variable of these, is worse than that of almost any other pianists appearing here. They are far below the quality of his playing. Kissin needs someone on his staff to control quality right across the board.
It seems in of silly to complan about how Kissin's style is different than any other pianists when recordings from multiple artists are readily available, thus you can listen to any version whenever you want.
Incredible... Upcoming Sunday, me and my brother will be hearing this concerto in Het Concertgebouw - Amsterdam!! I can't wait... I'll try to make a recording aswell!
I prefer the version by Jae-Hyuck Cho, actually -- much cleaner and precise. Kissin's is too much rubato. Otherwise the old Horowitz interpretation is a classic.
Kissen is wonderful! I do not like the slowness of the opening bars of the first movement, however. It is one of the most haunting opening of any piano concerto and he spoils the effect by being kitchy.
the best Rach 3 version played by any pianist is is Sergei Rachmaninov, NO one can copy his style of playing, but their are some pianist who did a great job but will never be as great as Rachmaninov was, R.I.P.
Kissin is the go-to guy for Rachmaninoff. I wish he'd do the complete Preludes. Heck, I wouldn't even mind if he did my own Symphonic Variations, which is here on YT, but that's like way out in left field. Kissin always gives rock-solid live performances--never seems to make a mistake and he probes the music like few piianists can. What a gifted guy!
@JoeTownley Have you heard Biret play Rachmaninov? She has recorded all his piano works. She is one of my favorite interpreters, especially when it comes to the preludes and etudes-tableaux. Although, her concertos aren't as good as some others.
I don't know of any composers who write like this today. I just finished a work for piano and orchestra in the romantic tradition, modeled after Franck's Symphonic Variations that is here on YouTube but I'm the only one I know. Everything I hear by composers today is ultra avant-garde so their audience is very limited. OTOH, I would not be taken seriously by the community-at-large for writing in the traditional style, so the only winners today are Rach, Tchaik, Chopin et.al. Sad.
There is noone like Rachmaninoff!! My very favorite!! I cannot even begin to comprehend how any composer can write music like this while having to stop & write down the notes!!!! I love the angle of this video how you can see both hands. I love the long fingers & how they just ever so lightly glide over the keys. Amazing!! Beautiful!
wow! What a fantastic performance! I am really enjoying learning Rachmaninoff's music at the moment. I have just uploaded some of my youtube videos. Please feel free to listen, comment and rate. Cheers!

I fail to see the humor in your remark, ans I still fail to understand what you mean by it. You have not explained it.
@billyguns2 - You have to remember, however, that a 'Rachmaninov' allegro or meno mosso is ALWAYS different from a Beethoven allegro- or any other composer. That being said, the pianist has to concentrate on the sound of the particular composer and the piece or movement itself. Most pianists dont realize Rach himself recorded his own concerti several times. His tempi he takes in performance captures his stylistic effects and so forth.
@7angels7plagues I just listened to Rachmaninoff's own recording of this opening tempo, which is a true Allegro and moving much faster than Kissin's; are we not to take Rachmaninoff at his word and example?
@billyguns2 I agree with your teacher. Kissen is a fabulous pianist, but he looses the magic of this concerto by playing the allegro too slowly. I much prefer Rachmaninov's own concept of what is allegro. Kissen needs to resist that part of him that would make him another Ling Ling, or whatever that Chinese creep is called.

Not bald, but not nearly as much as I used to have. Well, Kissin may have more hair than I do, but at least I can play the piano better -- oh wait... no, he's better than I am on the keys, too... I must have something he doesn't -- oh... I know some great places to park in the Chicago Loop! And on some days, I'd rather have that knowledge than more hair!
Kissin is awesome, but in his concerto recordings his playing occasionally has the tendency to sound slower than it actually is. Something in his rubato just kills the forward momentum, I noticed the same trait in his Prokofiev Third concerto with Abbado.
I mean Kissin doesn't treat the Rach 3 like a showpiece, but I feel he takes it to the opposite extreme, trying to realize an artistic interpretation with such focus there isn't any excitement left in it.
It´s not a song lol. It took Volodos 3 days to learn I believe. He considered it easy lol. Dunno about the others but they propably practised more then that.
oh men!! you are so full of s%$t, you are making that up, even the most remarcable pianists think its a hard piece, but i dont think you'll ever understand that, cause you are not a musician i guess
just me or is it too slow? ._.

HAHA! Actually that's the way his hair always looked at that time. I'd trade hair with him any day.

let me guess ..you are bald ;-)
ytertyu 2 years ago 2
Not bald, but not nearly as much as I used to have. Well, Kissin may have more hair than I do, but at least I can play the piano better -- oh wait... no, he's better than I am on the keys, too... I must have something he doesn't -- oh... I know some great places to park in the Chicago Loop! And on some days, I'd rather have that knowledge than more hair!

secret parking places in Chicago ?? NO,,I can't believe it ..that's too much ..man ,, what I wouldn't give for that knowledge ?!!

At first I thought, nah, too slow, but then I realised that I can actually hear every note. He doesn;t seem to skip notes like some other pianists do

The sound quality is too lousy. It's a shame.
rayyzhao 2 years ago
some people say this piece probably has to one of if not the HARDEST piano pieces ever.
chikkmagneet 2 years ago 6
I think it is the HARDEST piece to play, and I am Half way through this piece myself - Half way listening to it that is:)!
AnthonyB777 2 years ago
This is really hard piece too but I think Scarbo by Ravel and Islamei from Valakiev are even more difficult than this piece...

If anyone wants to see a really great youtube of this supreme concerto, check out Yefin Bronfman's one (in 5 parts with Gergiev conducting)

Hes not actually playing the piano. It's just CG.

Probably takes the "greats" anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months to learn this PIECE...It's NOT a song.
goldenthroat86 2 years ago
I wonder how long does it takes for great piano players such a Lang Lang, Kissing, and Martha Agerich to learn a song like this?
macbookpro94 2 years ago
It´s not a song lol. It took Volodos 3 days to learn I believe. He considered it easy lol. Dunno about the others but they propably practised more then that.

oh men!! you are so full of s%$t, you are making that up, even the most remarcable pianists think its a hard piece, but i dont think you'll ever understand that, cause you are not a musician i guess
vamoselmillo 2 years ago 5
Yes I am, and I can find the interview where Volodos claims that he hought it was easy.
