I know that I have an untrained ear. Thank God. I think she sounds lovely. To the "experts" who left such silly critiques-Blah Blah Blah. No one gives a rats ass what YOU think.
There was one concert i have seen and she was one of the performers, although she's great but all i've heard from her singing was the "OO" sound w/c is really weird. I dont know she's different sometimes. I'm big fan of classical music.
She just doesn't know where to put her hands... that's ok. It's plainly obvious from the shape and sound of her vowels that she HAS been coaching, She's in transition. She's obviously learning to shape the mouth and lengthen the tract. She has to learn to maintain the true sound of the vowel with the tongue despite the O or OO shape of her lips. That's it. She'll get there. Not that I particularly like her, but she does have a beautiful voice. She's learning to use it 'classically'.
I would prefer pretty much anything except for Charlotte Church's version to this. This is painful.
I might like it if she was intending to parody the stereotype of the hooting, screeching, swooping dramatic soprano. Honestly. The type of sound she is attempting to use isn't anywhere near appropriate for the Baroque repertoire.
I'm ranting a little, but I just heard Brian Asawa in concert, so finding something like this is a bit maddening.
I love all these comments. Sarah vowels are far too dark. Not very Italian. She has a good/lovely voice but her coaching in style and breathing tech are off the professional mark. What's with the hands? A bit of a 'Ham' performance but the quality is there. Not like Russell bloody Watson!
At last someone who knows something about thechnique. The o diction is perfectly accepted because it is a thechnique and I'm not surprised Sutherland used it too sine Sarah and her studied in the Royal College of Music in London as well.
Joan Sutherland used a technique called covering which is a slight rounding of the vowels, this is something that is rarely taught anymore and is basically a "fake your way" approach to good singing. Although Joan modified the vowels slightly an italian AH was still very much an AH.. Sarah does not modify.. she changes the vowel to the point that the word is not recognizable..a big no no in the classical world.. but then again.. she is not a part of the classical world.
...yeah, her vowels leave much to be desired... If you sing a piece that is not within your usual repertoire, then hire someone who is a professional in the area to teach you how to do it right, or else don't do it at all.
memories, memories....i haven't heard this in so long. Eden was one of my favorite Cd's for so long. I don't listen to it as much because over the course of about 5 years i wore it out, but its still nice to hear every once in a while. The oboe solo on this piece is incredibly tranquil and lends a special quality to this song. I think it's a little longer on the cd though.
Great. Curious, those that have taken voice study know how difficult to "Hit" it just right. All rehersal, practice, and then on stage - it's the energy - the audience, what we can't see - that has such great influence. Sarah introduces classics to many younger peope. She's great.
Aeter: Lascia Ch'io Pianga wasn't made for Sopranoes, but for those women among us who easily reach low Alto-Tenor, it's quite lovely sounding. But, yea...I know exactly what you mean. She can't hit it quite right, she gets it for a split second, and then it leaves. But, anywho...SARAH! WE LOVE YOU!
How many women do we have records of during that time period? One thing is to have it as an aria for a female character, the other is to have an actual women play it ;) Indeed, there were few women who actually sang this piece, but notes from Handel himself prove this was not for a soprano but for a castrati.
Besides my friend, opera singers don't use mic because they sing in Opera Houses, which are much smaller and with a better acoustic. Sarah's concerts are made for stadiums and arenas. And this concert was made for a huge auditorium. That's why she uses mic.
Yeah but she's not an opera singer. she sings classical crossover, not opera... And she didn't use a mic for Cats, Requiem, Phantom or Aspects of Love when she sang in them...
its nice to see sarah sings for real! she was in shape at that time..but its a pitty she cant realy sing well any more..her voice is not clear as it was..but i love her any way. i wish i could see the whole concert..
I really enjoyed this rendition. Its a longer version than her Eden Album version. So beautifully sung. I'm really glad I stumbled into this clip. Can you reference concert this clip is from? Thanks.
This is from the special concert given by Sarah Brightman and Placido Domingo in Tokyo, 2000. This concert video was shown on a Japanese HDTV channel just after digital HDTV started in Japan in 2000. It's not commercially available.

she has a beautiful voice..but she does the "E" like an "O" :S very weird, and it makes the lyric of the song sounds weird :s

Yes, and she worked with great vocal coaches, who have worked, with, Inva Mula, and other great opera singers.

oh please, couldn't she work on the text a bit more?
like... at least knowing what she was singing?
it's a bunch of desperately melancholic lines about the wounds and the bounds of love... not a silly child lullaby!!!
