  • Love it.

  • I love this music--I too could listen to it for hours. I always feel like something epic is going to happen... Usually it's a death spiral, but still.

  • As a classical and electric guitarist of 11 years, I must say that this piece is beyond brilliant. If this were published on Itunes it would get alot of reputation with the classical musicians. If only this song were put out there more it could be something many professional guitarists play.

  • i just listened to both versions and how i put it is this is this sounds like th original creator the guy sitting in the alley of mexico 1800 playing this with a shitty guittar he made... your version reminds me of like a ritch harp being played to a king ... yours sounds more like someone ..i dunno this one reminds me of cs_italy counterstrike

  • i love this song just for the atmosphere generated from the use of one instrument... really gives you a feel of being there.. most big budget games can't even get music as good as this...

  • two people spawned next to elephants.

  • @ExRedRain I don't usually like these "X people ______" comments, but that was brilliant.

  • @ExRedRain No - one spawned next to an elephant, and after being trampled to death, the other had a sudden hankering for socks.

  • @MyNameIsBucket *Open video relating to Dwarf Fortress* *See this comment*

I find nothing unusual about this.

  • Reminds me of Diablo, the Tristram theme...

    Anyway, great tune.

  • I usually mute the music in a game to further immerse myself.

Not in Dwarf Fortress. I could listen to this shit forever.

  • @Rygith Aw, that's not cool. You miss out on a lot of magnificent music that way. Not to mention music is part of the immersion. :\

  • love it

  • Is this available anywhere in a pro-level-quality recording? As in, with no background white noise?

  • @realblublu I do have a virtual rearrangement I made (video response), but it may not be to your liking.

  • @StarmanSuper00 Yeah, I saw that, but it's not what I'm looking for. I guess what I want is for Toady to hire a recording studio and play the music in that, so it'll be super high quality. The music files that come with the game also have the same background noise, so I'm guessing he just recorded it at home with his own equipment, which understandably is not at the level of quality of a professional recording studio. Oh well. :P

  • @realblublu I wish he would too. He seems so nonchalant about the song when people ask him though--I wonder if he even recognizes it as the brilliant piece it is.

  • @StarmanSuper00 It is indeed a great musical piece, it really deserves to be recorded in a studio. For that matter, if he feels nonchalant about that piece, I wonder if he has several other musical pieces of that level of brilliance in him. :P If so, maybe he should release an album :P I know I would buy it.

  • @StarmanSuper00 perhaps he purposefully wants it to remain at the quality that it is, because it's more fitting that way. it kinda feels more real when it isn't as fancy, i guess it just seems to fit the game's ambiance and atmosphere better that way.

    at least for me, idk.

  • @StarmanSuper00 It is indeed a brilliant piece, and it is a shame that Toady doesn't seem to realize that this theme is as awesome as it is. Professionally done, this would blow anything I can think of out of the water.

  • @realblublu if he did what u said he is fucking skilled with a guitatr and made this sound so amazing imagine him drunk playing some of these hardcore scenes...imagine his woman sitting there as he plays this..u know hes got blowed that night!

  • Such a calming piece.

  • @MoltenMustafa And then, suddenly, Fun.

  • I sleep to this on loop.

  • I have this playing on a loop while I program, it calms me down and stops me from raging. Seeing as I'm also developing a game set in a peaceful forest it helps me with creativity too :D

  • love the music.. but after a while it kinda makes you go insane!!!

  • i've been having tons of nice times with this game lately, it is awesome.

  • Dwarf Fortress is like life. You need food water and plenty of alcohol to survive.

  • conveys a sense of poignancy and the knowledge that the player is doomed from the beginning, complete with subtle hints of brutality...

  • Is it just me, or does this song sound like it'd fit perfectly in Diablo?

  • The relaxing part of this song really is unique and quite nice to listen to.

  • @chhezuz91

Then the roof opens and lava pours down because they were actually all nobles. Or maybe a bronze collossus tears down the wall, or the fortress breaks into the HFS or Obok Meatgod's ghost comes to inflict unimaginable horrors on the fortress or something else causes a spectactular display of chaos, smoke, miasma, blood, death and carp.

Such is the world of Dwarf Fortress. Remember: LOSING IS FUN.

  • Best music ever.

  • Man, often I just focus too much on the game to even hear the song.

    It's great to hear it.

  • the music give you a feeling of luck for every minute your new fort goes without being attacked buy a frogoted beast.

  • @Duskstorm150 it does sound a little sloppy but thats what i think gives it charm :)

  • I can't play the game. ASCII breaks my brain. Dwarf Fortress is too complex...

  • @rushone2010 Download a tile pack. They make everything look like what they are meant too. Grass, stone, tress, etc.

  • Sounds like something Matt Uelman would do...

  • Reminds me of diab- nvm that guy said it

  • I gave heard that, SO MANY TIMES

  • Reminds me of Diablo 1.

  • What genre of music is this considered as? I want more eerie guitar solo sh*t lol! It's great for atmosphere!

  • @ThePSNGuy Classical/flamenco guitar, but nothing else I've heard really quite captures the spirit of this one. :x

  • @StarmanSuper00 I'd definitely classify it as classical. It reminds very much me of this: watch?v=oEfFbuT3I6A

  • @ThePSNGuy If you like this song you'll likely like the Tristram Theme from Diablo 1.

  • @ThePSNGuy Check out the Diablo 2 Tristram theme I find it to be somewhat in the same category as this !

  • @ThePSNGuy tristram from diablo?

  • @ThePSNGuy Gnosienne 1 by Erik Satie is similar in mood IMO. Originally for piano but people play it on guitar too.

There's plenty of amazing classical guitar out there you just gotta look ;)

  • I love the music!

I don't care whether it's played messy or not. In fact, I like those rare flaws in the piece. They really give me the feeling this piece is being played by a dwarven bard in the meeting hall, while the others listen to him enjoying their well-earned jug of mead, after a long and hard day of work.

I rather listen to that kind of music than some generic, 100-percent perfectly-played pop shit.

  • @cheezuz91 Barrel. Not jug. We don't have jugs.

  • @cheezuz91

Implying dwarven bands could ever exist. They'd just use the instruments as weapons!

  • @cheezuz91 And then suddenly there was a tantrum spiral, killing everyone in a massive bar fight. ^^

  • Oh my god, I love this song!!

  • @Duskstorm150

the piece is good, its horribly performed actually

  • @sgt0pimienta

ok not "horribly" but he makes some mistakes,i couldn't be able to play this myself in less than a month

  • i just realized this game has no sound effects

  • hoop scoops

  • i loove this song, but i haate this song. it's all haunting. i remember i was messing with some raws till midnight and i kept on hearing this song..... and for all the flaws, yes they are there, and it might be better if toady re-recorded it, but i still love/hate it all the same :D

  • I play this on loop with adventure mode.

  • Am i the only one who thinks this sounds like Opeth.........

  • @sio42 Herro.

  • @Megadedly YOUVE DISOVERED MY FACEBOOK IDENTITY

  • @sio42 Lol you gave me the link to this.

  • @sio42 Nope. I think so too.

  • The music makes me think lonely, bleak, and depressing. It's perfect for a bunch of dwarves sent to the middle of nowhere to survive.

  • I always thought it was kinda odd that one of my suicidally depressed dwarves still kept that same psychotically smiling icon...

Very excellent classical piece, it reminds me of Diablo.

  • I just realized that for the small company that has made DF, these guys wrote this piece as well as made it. This song is amazing for a game of this quality. My father, a classical musician, heard this song and he came to me and asked me what it was and that it sounded really nice. Hopefully i can spread this song and game to influence musicians and game developers alike :D

  • @Xemptuous If by small company you mean one guy.

  • I learn this!

  • 2 People are having too much fun...

  • i always get restless when i hear this

  • I like it! its imperfections make it even better

  • Great Tune! Use it with 'Endlessyoutube' :D

By the way, another music i found to go very nicely with Dwarf Fortress is Karsten Koch's more ambientish tracks...the albums, Orange dream , Elements..

    (Check His official Homepage)

  • i play this song every time i play dungeon crawl stone soup it is perfect in my opinion. I need to bust out the ol dwarf fortress though... maybe ill do that now XD

  • @Duskstorm150 It's supposed to sound a little sloppy, and is fitting because I think it's supposed to sound a bit like someone actually played it around a fire and not some studio version that is all perfect.

  • The music is so fitting.

  • This is apparently based off of a Bach piece, I think it's Prelude in C Major?

  • Comment removed

  • Great job!

  • This song is burnt into my mind. I remember one day i played this game all day the first day i found out about it. When i fell asleep i had no dream except this song and i was thinking about dwarf fortress. Worst sleep ever but worth it.

  • First time playing the game

    - me: i like the music :D

    *plays Adventure mode*

    - me: Wheres the music?

    *goes onto youtube*

    *finds this video*

    - me :D

  • This was my phone alarm for 2 years, but the audio quality was so hissy I couldn't take it anymore, not to mention it would enter my dreams and not wakeme up. This needs a clean, crisp cover by toady1 with less mistakes and better quality, and I would donate to bay12 games AGAIN!

  • This is a ☼song☼. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is made of win.

  • @Duskstorm150 There are some parts that he messed up on but the only reason I notice is because i've been playing guitar for 11 years. To the normal person it sounds fine but this song does have some awkward positions that are hard to hold and that's where they messed up.

  • @Xemptuous Blasphemy! Get out!

  • @StarmanSuper00 How does the uploader's comment get too many negative votes? I thumbed it up!

  • @Xemptuous I kind of notice what sounds like a lack of slight inaccuracy in places and some odd out of place notes, but to me that makes it sound very "authentic" so to speak. It's weird because I usually hate folkish acoustic guitar music, but something about the simplicity and emotion really makes it fit somehow.

  • @Xemptuous What is the original song called?

  • @Xemptuous a normal person? lol that's a bit narcissistic

  • @is194 So you think a person who's been playing guitar for 11 years has the same say as a person who hasn't on whether or not it has some awkward strings in there?

  • @Notoria666 I've played classical bass and electric for the past 12 years. I heard the awkward transitions and off notes too, but I'm not a pretentious ass about it.

  • @is194 calm down, i think he means that those with greater familiarity might be more quick to notice flaws than someone unfamiliar and thus less observant to said particular flaws. it's not a matter of arrogance.

  • @is194 What's so pretentious about it? 11 years is a damn long time. You haven't really heard anything that screams "pretentious" except the word normal. And I don't see anything wrong with him saying normal, and nobody else probably does either. You're just overreacting to the word "normal."

  • Anybody who says its sloppy can bring it to me. This was played by the stumpy, callused hands of a dwarf in pitch blackness on a guitar made of bone and cat intestines. Of course it's going to be sloppy. But all the more sombre and evocative for it.

  • @Duskstorm150

to those who say it is "sloppy", keep in mind the guy who made the game also made this song.

this song is difficult to play and also even if you can play, who is to say you could even compose something like this in the first place.

  • It's not a bad song, but it gets old fast since it's the only song. I usually play Korpiklanni (search them on youtube, Tuli Kokko is my favorite but the lyrics to Wooden Pints could apply to dorfs) when I play DF

  • This song rapes my mind in a good way :D

  • Urist McGuitarist did this music while in a strange mood.

  • @telemnor YES. HE DID INDEED.

  • 2 people will get visited by Goblinclaus.

  • wow this is some pretty good classical guitar music. First game I've ever heard of that had classical guitar for a soundtrack.

  • 2 People are Elves.

  • where was my money pocket...

  • The song fit's the game very well, It's quite sombre and sad, which is rather the state most forts end up in, Either boring day to day life Or death by demons. Either way a sombre or sad tale.

  • This song is absolutely perfect for this game. I would even say the game would not be as good without this song.

    Strike the earth!

  • What is that miner doing sitting there? Send him to work!

  • I can just hear cpntduck saying "Hello guys this is cpntduck"

  • @StarmanSuper00 But still, would it not be more interesting with a more Dwarven-like theme? Something that rings of industry, adventure, booze, and rampant magmafloods?

I mean, I like this, it's good... But it gets boring quite quickly, and it doesn't envigorate me.

  • NOT THE MACAQUES.

    NOOO-

    Comment Intterupted: Rhesus Macaque

  • this music is perfect for DF. what a strange world we try to hopelessly survive in...

  • This song has always reminded me of a rainy summer evening. Very relaxing.

  • Anyone know any music similar to this?

  • @zwogon Diablo's Tristram theme

  • people for this song are dwarves

and people who aren't are elves

  • Great; same line of blood as the Tristram theme from the first Diablo.

  • WHO THE FUCK DISLIKED THIS?!?!?!?! >:O

    CDHJSFBHEJWKHCDJKSBHEJKWDHSJBCHJEWBDWHJ

  • 2:45 D:<

  • every time i hear 2:45 i think to myself, "damn, almost perfect" :(

  • this song is so good i play it during minecraft, and minecraft's music is pretty bomb too.

  • This is one of the most stimulating, thought-provoking, emotion-packed, perfect songs in existence. I love it.

  • i like it but it starts to frustrate me over time

  • a little sloppy, but great arrangement.

  • @nubcakken01 the slopiness makes it sound cool.. like its being played around a dark smoky campfire by a travel weary bard, battered and broken by his long journey on the road less traveled he longs only to express the deep sonorities hidden in his tattered spirit

  • Do you hear that? That's the sound of time vanishing.

  • It slowly chips your sanity away.

  • wtf? how can someone not like this song?

  • @ProjectZeus Are you referring to the one lost soul that disliked this video?

  • @stevensonbak yeah =)

  • @stevensonbak

It starts with one but soon there will be a tantrum spiral....NOW MAKE ME 3 GOLD WARHAMMERS OR I WILL PUNCH YOUR BEST MINERS SKULL IN

  • MAkes me want to go out into the forest or some hsit

  • This is the best music in Dwarf Fortress

  • 1 person was at Boatmurdered.

  • LOL2CAT

  • I CANT GET THIS SONG OUT OF MY FUCKING HEADDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • 1 guy is an elf.

  • 1 guy was raped by a dwarf

  • one person can't get their dwarves to dig holes

-Homework interrupted: DwarfFortress in the way.

  • listening to this music while playing Goblin Camp

  • Tabs please, tabs anyone I am begging you this music is beautiful!

  • I love the atmosphere of DF. Idk if its the graphics or the scale of the game but it just has this epic atmosphere to it.

  • @thajoka123 It always felt very serene and calming to me personally. The music only helps to reinforce that image.

  • @StarmanSuper00 what about when wounded dwarves are lying outside from an attack with more dwarf loving animals nearby (and i don't mean the frendly like i mean they like to eat them) that must be calming or when a dwar goes beserk and floods your whole fort?

  • @TheGhostlyboredom what abour when YOU flood your whole fort trying to kill a noble?

  • @StarmanSuper00 Somewhat of an ironic image considering how much fear, tragedy and bloodshed makes up the game.

  • @StarmanSuper00 Calming while a fortress falls with a mother beating a tailor to death with her baby.

And all of them are on fire.

  • Listen to this song when I do homework.

  • is thre anywhere to download this song?

  • "Its ability to get stuck in your head combined with the listener's inability to actually remember how it goes suggests it may be some kind of ethereal god music." straight from tvtropes(dot)org

  • best 8 Minute loop music evar!

  • I've been listening to this for hours, many, many hours.

  • I wish I had the patience to learn the games interface properly. I love reading about Dwarf Fortress playthroughs. But I just can't navigate the menus for long before succumbing to frustration. Still, I now have this to play in the background as I read more tales of fortresses.

  • @Pliskkenn There are two tutorials I suggest. There's captnduck's video tutorial (just search for "captnduck" on Youtube) and "The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial for Dwarf Fortress" by Tinypirate. Both started off as tutorials for the now-older version 40d, but the core gameplay stays the same. They also both updated their tutorials for the new version, so check 'em out. Captnduck's tutorial is good because it's videos, but Tinypirate's tutorial comes with a save to, well, play along.

  • @Nixitur I did watch alot of Captnduck's videos and got cracking a while back, might look them up again and make another go of it. I'll check out the other tutorials too. Cheers man.

  • @Pliskkenn I recommend Bentgirder, it's on the Magma Wiki (DF wiki). They're awesome, and I prefer the slow pace of written tutorials.

  • the one dislike will be trapped in a flood room with the elven caravan

  • All the time. ALL THE FREAKING TIME! I just need to listen to this again one or two times and I suddenly want to play it again. It's horrible. Horrible and very, very awesome.

  • ahaha related video "Diablo Soundtrack - Tristram Village" HELL YES

  • this is currently my alarm tone on my phone, which is so soft and gentle that it enters your dreams before you wake up. i'd kill for a better version without so much compression and noise.

  • I have two favorite games, Dwarf Fortress and Cortex Command and I still don't know which one is my favorite one since both of them are still not finished.

    Wow.

  • God I wish i could actually play this game, but sadly I have no clue how the controls work. Is there a tutorial for it anywhere?

  • @zoogish Watch captnduck's video tutorial series. It's mostly for 40d, but it has been updated with a few newer videos for the 0.31 updates.

Also, bring enough time with you, because I think he has 45 videos right now.

  • @Glmclain I think it'd sound better on a carp.

  • OH GOD, NO! I heard this music SO MUCH, my ears are bleeding.

  • i think Xfire makes stops the music from playing when i use it with dwarf fortress.. so i can just put this video on repeat and HUZZAH! so thanks:D
