Im a filmmaker and heres what most composers do. They are asked by the director to come along and they talk.

The director tells him/her what the overall style of music he wants, the mood, finds some comparisons etc

The composer then absorbs this and creates his/her own style, going along with what the director wants too.

And finally, the composer watches the film and composes music accordingly. Thats why all music match the films. Hope that helped.
