  • J.E.A.L.O.U.S.

  • Jasmine, you're simply brilliant...I still can't believe my ears....you were so young when you played such a difficult score...

Not only are you technically superb but the way you interpreted Densitiy was amazing for someone as young as you.

A warm hug from Buenos Aires !!!

  • it depends on how long she has been playing flute but this is not a really good talent for her.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!! Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Make sure your tone isn't too forceful, you want a more dark and "nasty" sound so to speak. Also, your fingerslap needs a little work. However, all in all this is very nice!

  • this is an odd song...

  • Wow, you play this well and you are younger than I was when I started the flute. Keep going, young lady.

  • she's talented, though the piece is a bit easy. still very good for a 9 year old. the movements she makes are very,,.. well , let's just say that she doesn't have to make those movements.

    I mean.. she's really good..

  • she's talented, though the piece is a bit easy. still very good for a 9 year old. the movements she makes are very,,.. well , let's just say that she doesn't have to make those movements.

  • @steefjeuh Actually, this is a ridiculously hard piece. You obviously don't know at all what you're talking about. We're analyzing it in my theory class.

  • @harp4ever for me it looks kinda easy though, you can say what you want, but I do know what I'm talking about

  • she is good i play ther fote toooo

  • theres always an asian who does it better.

  • @villemoilol

It's already been done perfectly by others long ago...

    so what's your real point?

    Oh right, a racist comment.

And this rendition is far from perfect.

  • ahahah where else but youtube would i be able to see a 9 year old girl in a powerpuff girls shirt playing atonal music I LOVE IT

  • Very good, Jasmine! You play the flute very well. My advise for you as a teacher is to explore other repertoire more according to your age. If you like contemporary music, there is a book called "Melanges pour flute et bande magnetic" by different authors, editorial Hergel. You will like that book I guess. Best wishes for you!

  • you're a sheep...you mustn't play this piece...you must go to pasture the sheep and not play the flute...

  • @flautistafallito so rude to say that!!!!!

  • WOW! Very very nice!

  • Do you have an open whole, in line g with a b flat???And you are wonderful player!

  • What a beautiful tone on the highest register!

  • you have the same name as i do and your a very very talented artist. stick to it

  • this is all i have to say.. omg...

  • Great job, only moving around should be kept to a minimum on any instrument. If you need to move to express yourself, that's fine, but it makes it harder to keep a solid sound and should be kept to a minimum. You've got potential to be a really great flutist, just keep working on it!

  • @samtheclarinetist

I think moving while playing an instrument is fine as long as there is not too much tension in your body. I used to play with too much tension and that did hinder my playing. But as long as I relaxed things became much easier! Moving can be a natural outgrowth of the expression of the music. But people differ in what amount of movement works for them. Her movements seem to show a natural understanding of the music she is playing. She has a lot of potential.

  • Huge improvement than your flight of the bumble bee video. Great job and keep up the improvement. (btw I still have no idea how she achieved grade 8 flute already).

  • come on... shes asian and lives in hong kong... grade 8 is like standard there XD lols jkjk

  • I'd like to think of myself as a good flute player... and well.... You probably pwn me. lol.

You get so into it, it's hella tight.

During band rehearsal i'll start to get like that, but i must tone it down because.. there's people around me. lol.

You're great though, you've inspired me to be better. I can't a nine year beat me. hahahaha.

  • you only need to hold the flute up straight if your marching.

  • You are great!!!Make sure to hold your flute up!

  • One thing: You really need to be careful of your left wrist because it looks like from the way you are bending it, you may develop carpal tunnel syndrome later on and that is something that HURTS!

By the way, you have a GREAT lower register!

  • Ha Thank you!I have been playing for 9 years and im just now starting to get this odd feeling in my left wrist(like a fuzzy type of feeling, where i cant move it)but i keep my wrist up...hhmm

  • good job, but you spead up

  • love the tonne.

  • nicee lol

  • im sorry not a big fan of the song but the playing was fantastic

    keep it up

  • Wow greatt......

  • omg u r amazing!!!

  • Ooh Yayzers you're 11 now right? Coolio so am I until August!

  • Wow, that girl has got some talent! I worry a bit about her playing difficult pieces like these.... it's going to be hard to reverse the bad habits she's demonstrating in these songs... they have a tendency to get committed into muscle memory.

Heck, I'm still ironing out bad habits in pieces that I learned last semester, preparing them for a recital. Boy, is it hard and frustrating! I'd hate for her to have to do the same thing for EVERY piece she's learned since she was nine....

    Sill, bravo! :)

  • NO LEAD FLUTE! lol dat wut my teacher says... but u shuold try to hold it up a lil more...it helps produce better sound nd keeps it more in tune =] very good tho!

  • moving is no personal preference - watch ANY professional musician. they all do it.

music is expressive. you can't sit there like a dead fish and play an emotional piece. it looks even stupider.

  • yes . definitely, just as long as they don't rock the flute back and forth. one girl in my orchestra does that, and sometimes when i sit next to her she blocks my view. try not to do that. but moving, is key to expression.

  • good job, the moving helps with the ryhtm, my friends make fun of me whan i do tha!! lol... the only thing thats buggin me is how low ur putting ur flute down!

  • Work on taking on breaths a little bit longer and you'll be alright

  • Wow, just wow. This girl is playing the song EXCELLENTLY, great tone and everything, and some of you are hooked on how she's moving. So what if she's moving? I move sometimes when I stand playing clarinet. Big deal. She's still got a good tone! So you critisizing idiots who are so hung up on the appearance of the child, go frick off!

  • As long as she plays well you shouldn't be critizing her playing. She's only 9. I know people well into their late teenage years who can't play like her even if they tried and practiced at it. She's very good. And does perfectly well without your critizism.

  • how would you know? have you heard me play? um, didn't think so.

  • @HeinousProduction No one is doubting her talent, merely giving their opinions. Criticism is good, it's what makes good musicians great. If everyone always tells you you're doing good and nothing but that, then you won't ever progress, really.

  • The moving can get annoying to some people, but I was always getting told to move by judges. Probably just a personal preference. Awesome playing Jasmine. And you were able to get that high D! I know college students who struggle with that.

  • moving is a great way to express yourself while playing. i move around a lot, so? there is no reason criticize someone for putting forth passion and emotion in their music

  • I should point out that moving is a great way to help facilitate expression. However, moving too much, either in a way that doesn't sync with the music's message at any given point, or in a way that is overly exaggerated can distract from the performance, and can even mess with the performer.

I can't even begin to talk about how many masterclasses I've gone to where prominent teachers have told students to stop moving as much.

  • Wow Very good, only nine and already playing this type of stuff. She did a really good job! And her D's were very clear! :] I remember learning this solo at camp, it was a pain to play/listen to haha.

  • Good job for your age! You'll get better! I've been playing for 3 years and that is good! All you need to do is hold your flute up more your slanted! Otherwise you did good! WAY TO GO! Also don't breathe so loud, do it softly that is what takes away you great sound! Keep it up!

  • 9 yrs old and you can play Density 21.5?! Well done, you're clearly an awesome talent. Like people are saying, working on your breath with some exercises like blowing a sheet of paper against the wall and seeing how long you can hold it for. Good luck with everything!!

  • Your amazing! But just as a little help, i guss you can breath like you do, just breaht at different periods. Then it'll sounds great, you only overblew one note, which is amazing. the beat was right. And i love your tone! Its the tone of a great flutist! - And your only nine! Think how amazing you can become with some more years practice!

  • Cool piano! I'm 12 and i've played 4 3years! Great virbrato! ur breathing is a little heavy, ruins that beautiful atmosphere! try breathing through your nose! While standing,u look like ur dancing. try to be more RELAXED =)

  • Actually, when playing if you 'dance' or flow with the music you get more into it, and feel the music, it may look a bit silly, but it does help some artists :)

  • And breath throguh your nose? stop giving out bad advice!

  • ok, i doubt you;ve played for 3 years, or you never practice. because, HELLO?!?! Its like, against flute rules to breath through the nose!! You have to change the way you practice if you wanna be a good flutist. Shes is relaxed shes 'swaying' when she feels the beat. But aggreed - breathing is a bit heavy. But shes holds her breath for a long time, she just needs to have diff. breathing periods. -Good job little kid!

  • my habit of breathing through my nose is from playing clarinet. multi-tasker=me dont be hating! AND SINCE WHEN WERE THEIR RULES AGAINST PLAYING THE FLUTE??? doubting? i've been playing since i wuz 8!!! that makes 4 years since im now 13. She is a great flutist and ur comment (good job little kid) is very offending! netherlands? more like neanderthals!

  • that was so good...

  • omg!!i love ur tone!!it's so clear!!no leaking air sounds unlike me!!anyways,,keep playing pretty!!:)

  • shes vibrato is very, very, Very good!

  • Her vibrato or how ever u spell it is beautiful.

  • Jasmine, when you play push your mouth peice is out too far push in a little

  • remember take little breaths and not big puffs believe me in band u cant do that and keep the high d's out.

  • Jasmine, you are a born flutist! Your tone is very very nice and I believe it will get even better! I wish they could teach the same way in Poland. I mean I don't think you could see a nine-year-old playing like that here.

  • Thank you very much!!!

  • @joannakrejzler

nor the usa, unless they are born a muscian.. Piano maybe.

    God job Jasmine.

  • I don't mean to sound critical about this cause you are an amazing musician but try holding your flute up a little bit... it will give you a better sound quality..... in high school they will require you to do this

  • omg im terrible at flute and i'm 14

    you are SO good!!!

  • she has amazing tone omg jealous much

  • Keep up the good work, Jasmine.

  • wow! how do those tiny lungs get those high D's out? lol...awesome job!

  • weirdo

  • Ookay then...just because she's amazing you think she's a bitch. Pretty pathetic, don't you think?

  • Don't move around so much.

  • wow natural talent

  • OMG she got the high D! good job!

  • OMG i played this for solo & ensemble!

  • your a buthole polywoly15.she is very pretty and can play the flute REALLY good.

  • ok. :) i don't play your games.and im not a female dog.:)

  • You can write anithying you want but that doesn't mean you won't make a complete fool of yourself in the process.

  • kinda mean to what u siad to that lil girl..

  • isn't it ironic she's asian? AZN POWER!!

  • Why is it ironic? Is there something anti-asian about the song?

  • Congrats to Jasmine and her teacher! This is an example that children can often approach better contermporary music than an adult!

I hope she will continue with this way and to hear soon a Berio's Sequenza! :-)

    Cheers

  • I have been playing for 2 years and i just learned seringetti dreams

  • man.. i want a yamaha 684.. -_-;; im stuck with an old broken 381 -_-%

  • I have a Yamaha 684

You could get the same sound as one if you just bought the Yamaha EC cut headjoint, and put it on the Yamaha 381

  • (I found out because the guy who posts these videos once said that under one of his videos)

  • She plays on a Yamaha 684H

  • shes sounds awsome.i play flute 2!

  • good playing horrible song......well i don tlike any of the new contemporary music neways....

  • I have to disagree there. Varese was a fantastic composer.

  • Yeah, nothing says 'scary new music' like a piece written in 1936. 70 years ago sure is new...

If I could get any of my fourth and fifth grade flute students to work this hard they'd probably double my salary.

  • whatever

i meant like random atonal nonmelodic music!

  • I think that you are a very talented little girl i Know that when I started to play the flute the I wanted to play harder music. Keep up the good work and don't worry about the people who say that you need to play easier music.

  • Well, she is good for her age, but not even being familiar with this piece, I'm sure this is not the correct way to play it. I believe she needs to work on pieces that are not nearly so difficult, because on several of the high notes, she sound more like a whistle than a flute. I don't think she has enough air at one time to produce such a high note. I'm not trying to be negative, just saying she should play things that she can play well,

  • Although she plays very well, as a flutist I believe that she should wait just a tad before attempting such diffucult pieces. I know that especially when I was younger I could never hold my breath long enough. I am not familiar enough with this piece to make any solid judgements, but I think she does not yet have the lung capacity required to play college level music.

IN NO WAY AM I TRYING TO SAY THAT SHE IS A BAD FLUTE PLAYER OR THAT HER PERFORMANCE WAS TERRIBLE.

    ~Sandeep

  • u should see her play flight of the bumbblebee!!! its awsome!

  • I have. It is pretty good.

  • Boring? This song isn't boring. I don't know the song, but she did an amazing job. If you think this is bad, you obviously don't have much appreciation for Good articulation- especially for a NINE year old girl. o_o;

  • this song is so boring and boring sounding.

  • Were not leaving bad comments about her at all. Yes, Jasmine is a talented young flutist, but YOUNG is the key word. She needs to spend her efforts on flute basics, before she starts working on college level music. By her working on this type of music so soon, she is learning it incorrectly. It is much harder later on to fix something musicaly, when you have learned it wrong. She should spend her time working on etudes, tonal studies, and phrasing exercises.

  • Thank you, Furrealjoy. At least there is someone on here who can get past the gimmick of a 9 year old playing Density 21.5 and appreciate that this is a pretty awful performance because Jasmine's basics are HORRIBLY lacking. I couldn't agree more with you.

  • Argh. Agreed, but I have to give it to her that she is very good for her age.

  • Don't worry about the people leaving bad comments. She is doing terrific!Their are 5 flute players at my school and none of them compare to Jasmine

  • She sure is cute.. can't figure out why she is playing all these very advanced pieces so soon. Maybe she should play something easier like "Cassandra's Dream Song" by Brian Ferneyhough. (other college flutists would agree!) lol

  • Just because she's young doesn't mean she should lower the scale! She's developing her skill.... more....

  • It doesn't mean she has to "lower her scale" because she's young, but she certainly needs to because she simply isn't ready for music of this difficulty. No one is trying to be ageist here, but the music she plays in these videos is clearly well over her head.

  • I totally agree with you...especially around 2:30 things get um... well ... see for yourself

  • once again with the professional model flute give a fricken closed hole, c foot, y arm flute, ot is that like a cheap flute?

  • That wasn't too good. I agree with the comment. On that 4th octave high D, you need to clean that. It should sound like you're putting all your air in for that note.

  • That was an incredibly unmusical performance. Please stop letting your daughter butcher major pieces of the repertoire, and get her a proper teacher. Her tone, breathing, interpretation, technique, etc. all need some major work. She clearly is not ready to be playing Poulenc, Varese, or any other important work. You're actually doing her a disservice by allowing her to "learn" such important music so poorly.

  • wow your realy good i wish i could have played like that when i was 9

  • good job! congrats :)

on trying such a hard piece at such a young age - best luck to you :)

  • my name is Jasmine too!

    Great Job

  • Great job. You're doing very well.

  • Keep up the great work!

  • wow! really not bad! you're little but you have good vibration for your age! :)

  • Very ambitious, and well managed to learn any of this. Since her tone is basically very good, the occasional problems (messy attacks) possible have a lot to do with the big physical body gestures. The trick is to move less but feel just as much, and convey it. Well done Jasmine

  • A very good sound!

  • lovely piece!

  • thank you very much! nice to have your support!

  • Keep on playing like that! Maybe in about 15 years from now, you're going to play Ferneyhough or Arthur Kampela, blindfolded! Congratulations. And don't bother about the bad comments. That's Envy.

  • Was she a bad girl and being punished by playing one of the most boring pieces ever written for flute? Ouch.

There's plenty of flute pieces with an actual melody. Or teach her improvisation...almost anyone with knowledge of scales and arpeggios could improv a piece with more charm.

  • I actually think this piece is one of the most funky solos for flute ever written. This might not be the best rendition (I'm impressed tho!!), but I've heard som cracking versions of this piece.

  • Funky is a word I usually associate with Black Music...and this is about as far from that as I can hear. Mercy, Mercy Mery is a funky tune.

  • Well.. I used the term intentionally (sp?). I'm not talking about a Mercy Mercy kind of funk, but more a primal (in lack of a better word)funk. The intervals.. the rythm and pitch.

  • Go back and listen to your boring Kenny G. Density 21. The piece is based on two melodies you idiot, one modal, one atonal.

  • snoopyflick;

Looking at comments left on your site shows me what a fool you are. Like any ignorant person you'd rather talk nonsense than fact. Easy to see what are my favs...but no, you want to pretend I like Kenny G. Right.

Miles Davis is more my taste...Varese has no melody worth anything in this ugly sounding piece...poor girl here struggling with a piece like this; she should have better music not intellectual meandering posing as music.

  • How dare you not even specify which period of miles davis you prefer, this further show your ignorance. There are also notable similarities between the two composers and many of miles' side man, all being influenced by impressionist composers More importantly you trash an old classic. How can you be so stuck as to not even accept an 3/4 century old pieces? Just because your musical taste is bland and and one dimensional doesn't give you authority to criticize an old classical masterpiece.

  • thats really good, but that piece isnt one of my gavorites. you should find her peter and the wolf^^

  • Wow, she really played a piece far above her age level! She must have a great teacher.

  • u hit those high notes very good

  • very good work! only 2 advices: 1.the + marked notes needs very little breath but the strongest percussive you can do clicking the keys (i click every time the g clef with thw 4th finger, left hand, togheter the other keys). 2. the last note (B''') must be longer (but it needs a lot of breath!).

  • she hit higher than a high D peeeps.

She is going to be good.. one thing to work on possibly would be her articulation, her sound is amazing, just sometimes she just attacks too hard..

  • The performance was very enjoyable. Thank you for sharing this.

  • Jasmine use to practice about 45 mins to 60 mins a day, narmally :)

  • Amazing work for a 9 year old. Imagine what she's going to be like when her lungs are full grown! Agree with Sisterfister about keeping it in time. How much does Jasmine practice?

  • Thanks a lot, You are expert!!! You know this great piece very well!!! Thanks for your comment and suggestion, I will also check the edition too.

  • Oh actually one more thing...9 and 10 measures from the end, the 32nd to the dotted eighth I believe is supposed to be a C natural instead of C# (or maybe I have a different edition...not sure. Something to check :-P)

  • High D's at age 9...holy cow. This is good, it's really good. The only thing I recommend is practicing it with a metronome. It's quite strict in time despite the way the piece sounds. Really awesome though. Great sound and musicality.

  • This is the world premiere in that age group!

    Applause!

But it is a difficult piece I never really understood ;-)

  • Hope that you don't feel boring!

  • no, of course, it is not boring- but a difficult piece

    ;-)
