  • She was the Judy Garland of disco.

  • Great voice, great record. Soul was alive and kicking in 1975.

  • One of my favourits from 75' used to try and get back in time to watch TOTP to hear this, great record and lots of memories.

  • Is that MFSB, the Sound of Philadelphia accompanying her?

  • Dwrinkle asked when the First Age of Disco started and when the Second Age of Disco started.

The first Age of Disco began around 1970. The signature of the First Age was that it was R&B vocalists. In other words singers. There was no stress on tempo, or rhythm, just the soulfulness of music.

The Second Age of Disco began in 1976, right after Donna Summer arrived. The tempos became the driving force, and the 12" record "My Love Is Free" signaled the beginning of tempo and looooong records.

  • sigh.... if i had three wishes i'd wish for esther back every time :[

  • Jamie Cullum is better

  • AB FAB !!!!!

  • Q RECUERDOS CON ESTA CANCION, EL PROGRAMA Q MARCO UNA EPOCA: "MUSICA EN EL AIRE", ALGUIEN LO RECUERDA?

  • @octubre1708 de que pais...??

  • what year was this..?

  • @spike555mr I think the year was late 1975 or early 1976. I remember dancing to this version in th discos.

  • What a Difference a Day Makes (Que Diferencia Hace Un Dia) ...

  • I can vividly remember practicing disco dance moves to this song in my living room with my best friend Samira. I has always been our song.

  • Her vibrato sounds a bit tortured, but I like it all the same. It sounds like she's really(really) lovin' the vibe! I think the song ended before she was finished!!

  • Note the Sax solo is by the second to none David Sanborn !

  • I love Esther Phillips, she did not get the recognition she deserved.

  • Dedicated to the late Sweet Loretta Thomas. First day of Spring 2011 What a difference a Day Made.

  • She had a different voice and sound...music appreciation...the band is good and so is she, good job

  • She had a different voice and sound...music appreciation...the band is good and so is she, good job

  • This is originally a Mexican song: "Cuando vuelva a tu lado"

  • @BRIGANTIUM2, that's right, from Maria Greever

  • Diva!

  • @highlandroom thanx for not just yelling at me for disagreeing i do enjoy the beat and besides the interesting voice it is catchy its good to know theres decent ppl on the internet <3

  • My man your taste in vocalists leaves something to be desired

  • she sounds like a goat her voice is extremely annoying, i can't tell but i think shes singing completely through her nose I look at all the comments and im flabbergasted that anyone thinks shes good its terrible she sounds like a dolphin or a goat i dont get it she sounds like a goat and i mean that literally she literally sounds like a goat plz enlighten me

  • @ajedmund This song was massive in the soul clubs of the north west, back in the mid seventies, i've always loved it. That said , i've just heard it, through your ears, and nearly pissed myself. there could be a ''goaty'' sound to her voice lol!!! maybe she should have done a cover of marvin gaye's'' herd it though the grapevine'' ,vicky sue robinsons ''turn the bleat around'' or '' love on a mountain top'' ......still love the record though!!

  • @ajedmund Has that acid worn off yet?

  • @PerignonPop theres no way u can listen to that song and when she holds a note out instead of vibrato she does this weird gutural goat sound i mean anyone can do it just make a sterotypical goat sound then make lower to the pitch of ur voice it sounds the same then u can sing vibrato like her its not talent and her voice is so nasally i feel like theres tons of ppl out there who could do perfect impressions of her voice

  • When I was a kid my mom played this song over and over. Now I know why.

    Wonderful:D

  • Amei!

  • Cannoir,

  • love this so much, what a delight to hear

  • Goat :-)

  • Ma belle jeunesse,où es-tu

  • Mias tout le monde fais un retour vers les années 70 car la musique actuelle c'est de la daube. Phillips ressemble un peu a Nina Simone

  • let make difference in live africa starting from today. it painful to see those pictures comming out from africa.

  • This is a fine song from the really far away past re-edited in 1975 by this fabulous singer (Esther Phillips), who imprinted to the lyrics and music a superb up-to date version of this goody-oldie from never-ever done before! Thank you for this video! 20 points out of 10!

  • Great song and singer.....but that dress! Surely, surely that was not disco wear!

  • I bought her album in the 70's just for this song and my husband hated it. I played it all the time!

  • @jetsetwm The wife from hell !!!

  • She and the song are great, but the cameraman must have been a 3-year old.

  • It's erie hearing this song knowing that Esther would be gone nine years after this song came out.

  • Blowfly did a hilarious version of this!

"What a difference a lay makes"!

  • This is one one the best old disco tunes not top 40 radio type..mostly played in Clubs and man it was awsome.I can close my eyes and see the dance floor full of dancers.....

  • ooooh yeah Disco Stu

  • BTW,Disco Stu doesn't advertise.

  • Eh?

  • ...on Daylight Savings Time morning I searched this song out and found it. Thank you for posting.

  • The original is a Spanish song by the name of "Cuando Velva a Tu Lado" Than of course there is the Great Dinah Washington version. This is however a very good in Disco Style, it's the first time I have ever heard it sung this way. I enjoyed it.

  • Another Great one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • In my opininon, Esther Phillips is the only person whose voice is totally suits to this songs. I have aleady heard this song sung by many others but this is the best one!

  • @beabirdy I agree. After listening to this version I searched many other versions. This is the best.

  • @beabirdy Exactly right. A really fantastic song by the only person who can sing it how it should be sung.

  • Was this the official promo film she recorded for this track? It doesn't look like it was from a TV show appearance, and it seems like they were going for an oldies look back in '75 with the washed out B&W film.

A great dance track. This came out a few years after disco was born.

  • con esto comenzo la ERA DISCO

  • This song is the ending song of movie sunchaser - 1996 and its quite a different song

  • WONDERFUL !!!

  • Comment removed

  • I love it! It has that same early disco/funk vibe as the Love Boat intro. Makes me chuckle, in a good way :D

  • 5*****

  • I love this song ,the first track I played as an announcer.I remember it with fondness

  • One of the classic -- and classy -- songs from The First Age of Disco. I always liked the first Age: it was about the singer. The bassline and how fast the song went became paramount in the Second Age of Disco, where some unskilled djs depended on beats per minute (bpm) to create their song set.

This was a great song to dance to, because the singer ran the song, not the accompanying music, as in the Second Age.

  • I didn't know there were Ages of Disco. So when did the first age of disco end and the second age begin?

  • Great cover of this old song...

  • Great Song!

    Wonderful Esther Phillips!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Why so few views for this classyc?

  • Love, it, love it, love it! Brings back so many good memories of the 1970's and being so young!

  • its great but is there a version exactly like this without all the moaning? possibly even an instrumental?

  • It is the "Moaning" that make it cool and different from Diana's version....

    I love both versions though.....

    Thanks for Posting....

  • @allenjalali i totally concur

  • @allenjalali this song by Esther Philps was released in the Disco era 70's, thats why it was so cool and Dina's Version was released in the 60's or earlier.

  • Busqué por mucho tiempo esta versión de "Cuando vuelva a tu lado"... preciosa voz de Esther Phillips, precioso el arreglo disco que hicieron de este clásico... GRACIAS POR COMPARTIR =D

  • ive been looking for this song forever!! thank you, utube!!!!!!!

  • I like this version but Randy Crawford's is something special to hear as well. I also heard that Aretha and a few others have recorded this as well.

  • AMAZING!!!! This song was written in the 1930's by the famous mexican composer Maria Greever with a different title: "CUANDO VUELVA A TU LADO", which would mean: "WHEN I GET BACK NEXT TO YOU"

I didn't know it could sound so cool in english and in a disco tune!!!!

  • omg... look at the way her mouth moves... and how she sounds...

She is the female Louis Armstrong O.O

  • Actually, Nice looking gal with a unique face.

  • great sound saxo or trompet , i like

  • She is sort of the Judy Garland of disco.

  • j'aime trop !!!!

  • Great funky song and great guitar solo!

  • unique voice!

  • Love this track, Dave Sanborn is on this, also Gordon Edwards, and Cornell Dupree, and Richard Tee on electric piano. Either Chris Parker or Steve Gadd on drums. She used to appear at Mikell's on 97th and Columbus, and just turn out the place back in the mid to late 70's. Thanks for posting.

  • love the song but what's up with the chapped lips?

  • Love this song reminds me of the Copa Cabana night club back in the 70's really had a real good time please keep it going, Oh would be nice if WE can turn the volume up more, thank you such for this ruby

  • Wonderful Song! I love Ester´s Disco version.

  • Well, this is a very interesting array of comments, on the beloved one, Tell, you what people, listening this performer has to turn up the volume!!!! God Bless Esther!!!

  • Thanks for posting this gem! I first heard this song in Canberra, late 1975...

  • this is one of my alltime favorites...i have many, but this is in the top 10.... have played in in a band many moons ago and allways went down a storm.

  • This song sort of describes her life, what she was hoping for and what really ended up happening. She left us way too soon.

  • I agree on the movie and her life, she contributed so much to our society, She is an Angel from above that gave us all allot of love and great memories, Thank God for people like her, she will always be number one in my book, and I ain't that old, she's the best, God Bless you Babe, You go girl!!!!!!

  • Its easy to judge when you are far from the problem or situation. Esther Phillip had to endure her parents divorce and lord knows what else. Her music and her unique voice were an invaluable gift to us all and we ought to celebrate that. Hope someone makes a movie of her life soon!

  • Hope she made it to heaven!

  • I LOVED this song when it was out. I'd never seen Esther Phillips perform, just heard it on the radio, (and my record player!) Thanks for posting!

  • a great singer ....RIP esther ....."miss heroine" by the great sam dees ...tells the story ..such a young age 48 ...

  • This is on her 1975 album with Joe Beck. I always wondered whose idea it was to set this 1934 standard as a disco version. BRILLIANT!

  • She had such a uniquely keen sharp voice. I had a chance to hear recordings of her before the disco and my gosh what a power she had. I hate she got caught up inthe dope thing tho. I admire so much she and Dinah Washington for their range and phrasing. What great ladies! Jungle bunnies? Is he kidding? LMAO! I thought Archie Bunker was a tv character...didn't know the idiot was real!! No matter!! Thank God America has come farther than Americans. Thanks for the posting!

  • What makes you think the devil is white, for that matter what makes you think at all.

  • tony7840, the version you speak of is not this version. This version was released in 1975.

  • heroin took its toll on miss phillips, she still sang her heart out, her eyes tell the story

  • 1975, the year disco made headlines.

  • Jimmy, you're at least, ten years ahead of this recording. Was a humongous hit...in the early 60's. Way before "disco."

  • By far the best version..love it 5 stars

  • Ester is the all time best on this song!

    10 Stars from me!

  • regarding the last 20 to 25 yrs, I could not agree more with sliv812...

I remember seeing her on tv in the mid 70's with the guitarist (played a white fender stratocaster). By the way, anyone knows who he was?

  • ester had a great album out then with a fablous new york guitarist called joe beck, very tasty.

  • what year did esther pass away and what did she die from. on the record you can hear the david sanborn solo but on this you can't is this not the orginal from the record

  • Esther Phillips died of liver and kidney failure on August 7, 1984 in Carson, California after many years of alcohol abuse and heroin addiction.

  • as an older white male let me say this

you embarress the rest of us

  • Rock....grow up, you do embarress us all with your racist comments. Just fucking enjoy the music.

  • Great stuff...!

  • Not only was she excellent, but the guitar solo must be one of the best sounding solo in the history of guitar solos...

  • Great musicianship for sure on this track! Makes you miss the old days, before sampling and laziness ruined popular music, like it has slowly but surely over the last 20 to 25 years.

  • Quelle est belle, j'adore cette vidéo et cette chanson, une grande dame. Merci d'avoir publié cette vidéo.

  • the sax solo was david sanborn. who i love.when did joe beck pass away

  • He died on July 22nd earlier this year from lung cancer complications...in Woodbury, Connecticut.

  • yep; brings back some 70's disco memories; I remember being at a gay club in Wichita, after hours getting to 'play bartender' dinking and dancing; crazy days and nites.
