To celebrate the release of John Pizzarelli's new album, Rockin' In Rhythm: A Tribute To Duke Ellington, Telarc International is giving away a complimentary two-night stay at the Carlyle Hotel, two tickets to my performance, dinner for two and a travel voucher!
I think it could be the sound quality of the camera they recorded with. Lots of old recordings sound out of tune because of sound quality. I doubt the piano was actually that out of tune.
Why?! Because it's with Mingus and Roach? Because it's mythological, and supposed to be that good? It doesn't work that way, even if Duke plays amazing on it as usual (on Caravan, note that Roach messed up the rhythm in the return to the closing A of the exposition - turning 4 into 1, it's a completely different rhythmic feel and it's definitely not on purpose).
Yeahm I did notice that, but I had erased it from my mind. CD players and skip function, you see. But the interplay between the musicians is what amazes me. The aforementioned rythm section's performance on Flurette Africanne is just to beautiful to pass up.
my favorite duke recordings are with his orchestra between 1935 - 46 (John Hardy's Wife, Rockabye River, Charlie The Chulo, Main Stem, Just A-Settin And a Rockin'... to name a few).
what are the names of these pieces? man... the way duke plays really shows how far ahead his mind was, he was truly unique in the way he could draw you into his music.
That's too bad the audio is so out of sync.

No piano tuner around?

sad that people listen out for imperfection in a piano when a true master of music sits down to play...
IndependentGeorge76 2 years ago 10
Tuning is relative anyway (hehe). Sometimes you might want it sounding that way.

Still sharp-witted and invigorated to the max in his later years. If we could all be so lucky.

Thanks for posting this video. It's great to listen to the master speak about how he gets his ideas.

it really isnt that hard
ght3ck 3 years ago
Yes, to sit down and play crap but he could sit at the piano and come up with masterpieces which is slightly difficult.

He was definitely at one of several highs around then, but I have a soft spot for his stuff with smaller bands.

Money Jungle is awesome!
my other favorites are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, Piano in the Foreground, the All-Star Road Band albums, and everything else Duke recorded!
