  • the force of the heavy rock will cut the bird in half!nice Steave!

  • I bet if you painted the trigger stick with peanut butter you could catcha squirrel

  • You should reduce the weight man, it is too heavy :)

  • That ground reminds me of the "Kenai Peninsula" in Alaska. Late fall time -Early Winter.

  • Where did Dave go?

  • A very creative and interesting trap. Although it consumes a bit of time but for me it is a brilliant. If you have any creative traps and snares, don't forget to email me at:Ariffinhb@yahoo.com

  • This is not the original ojibwa bird trap. The original used a springy sapling. This is important because the sapling is fasted and less forceful. when the snare closes it is not as tigt as a 2lb rock. This method should work, but a sapling would close the snare faster. It works, but I have always used a sapling. And I have caught a few birds with it. Maybe i will try the rock just to see how it fares against the sapling.

  • I have tried to get this trap to work, and I have never been successful. And besides, the rock he's using here is so heavy it will literally snap a bird's legs right off.

  • This is really not the best type of snare. Its percentages of catch is not that great. The problem is that the snare won't loop around the bird 90% of the time. I spent my childhood in the woods making traps catching birds, rabbits, raccoons, and possums. Snares work better if the snare is laying flat in the shape of a circle.

  • Ok, sorry.

  • @fborcic just ignore jerks like that.

  • Doing that in a forest? Why would the bird land on your 20cm stick when it has hundreds of trees and shrubs around.

  • @fborcic Did you watch the video? He says near the end that it would work great in a grassy meadow or near a creek, etc. You should think about watching before commenting.

  • @fborcic He failed to mention that you should mount a small chair on it to entice the birds.

  • That would make a nice dead fall trap, too. Forget the noose and instead run a trip wire tied to the perch stick down to a forked stake and under the rock to another stake.

  • peace.

  • I think the bug rock is a bit much, maybe a smaller one or a piece of wood? you don't want enough weight to break the bird's legs and it might escape to suffer, that's the opposite of what you want if you have the choice.

  • @flamedrag18 broken legs would prevent the bird from escaping as easily since the unusable legs would be held with greater force. Besides that, you just have to use what is availiable. Rocks aren't found just anywhere. so you are stuck with what you find, and you need a good sized rock in order to beat the reflexes of a wild bird.

  • @wayfaringcoyote if you break the legs, all there's left is the skin, which isn't very strong, it'll break and the bird can escape, thus die a suffering death unless it's lucky enough to be caught by a predator.

this is why I prefer the flexed limb method of tension, just take a smaller sapling(needs to be flexible) and tie it upside down on the main pole or sapling, then connect the snare rope to the sapling's tip, when the trap is set, the sapling is bend into a half moon, keeping tension on..

  • @wayfaringcoyote trigger stick and when triggered, keep steady, light pressure on the bird's legs so it doesn't escape at all, a smaller rock or pieces of wood would suffice as weights too.

  • hey if anyone has a problem with ojibway i will kick ur asses fuck u u bitches

  • i've tried making this trap before and it sucks, not the technique, setting it up. haha.

but it seems to me that your noose is a bit big, but if thats how you do it, keep it up.

Have you caught anything with this trap?

  • Beautiful. But you left out what they did to make that perch attractive to birds. God Bless.

  • @1stab no he didnt. he talked about making it stand alone in a meadow or making it a look out perch for a bath in a creek. these are both effective tacticts used by native americans who obviously thrived from traps like this.

  • @1stab they either baited it or they put it the middle of a field, this way it looks attractive as a high point where they can keep watch or escape from predators(this is why I like burying my stick deeply and making it tall, upwards of 8 feet)

  • I would like to see one in action.

  • Big rock....xD

  • do you have any vids of cheaking traps

  • im sorry i have to say this, i dont know if its a typical thing for you to have an assualt rifle in your vids but i didnt not see that comming lol

  • there is also a version of this trap with a Bow attached To the other side. but that is Hard to attach (it freaked me out)

  • I would think that the loop should be as small as possible (but about the same size as the stick). This would increase the chances of actually catching it by the feet. Also you can bait the stick (peanut butter?). Nice vid.

  • Will be adding this to my list. I am trying to make a trapping pocket guide of only how to set traps. A lot of the ones you have shown us will be in it. Thanks for making it easy to learn.

  • excelent instruction. thanks

  • What about a small net instead of cordage? I think it would be give a better chance of actually catching winged game.

  • Thanks Steve 5/5

  • Hey Critter thanks to you and all the rest of you guys for keeping Daves vision alive and well!

  • now that the pathfinder knife is out of production what is the next best or next 2 best knives of similar size?

  • depends on what you are doing. . . i love my mora sl2!!!!

  • have you actually ever caught something with this trap besides a stick? I have tried this trap and it seems to work in theory yet I have never caught anything. let me see a catch if you would

  • As I have said before I can't break the law on video. But yes, I do know from experience that it most definately works.

  • Looks like it would work. Thanks for the video.

  • Mr. S.C. Getter,

Wonderful job as always. You're doing a fine job keep em coming.

  • good video

  • very cool

  • Hey Steve. Great video. Your knowledge and versatility on the subject of trapping is amazing. I wish I had a tenth of the knowledge you have. No doubt you could and would put food in your stomach given any situation. Keep up the great work....

  • Never seen this one before crit'r. Really good video again brother. I'll certainly be giving this one a go

  • Good stuff critter, keep em coming.

  • I just want to say "Thank You" for keeping the videos coming. I, for one, appreciate your efforts.

  • Bait it with a little something and your odds of catching something increase greatly. Even a bird will land on a specific branch out of thousands---with a little something to eat on it.

Depending on weight, you would probably have to modify slightly for 4 legged critters though.

  • Great Video Steve, it is nice to see different types of traps demonstrated. Especially for different terrain types.

  • could you turn this in to a squral trap and have better odds? and have you ever had any luck with this one

  • @BUMP3303

just put peanut butter and u have a squirrel trap

  • it must be the lowest possibility trap i've even seen. Additionally, it needs much cordage and a lot of effort to build.

  • kwstikas82, Do you think the Ojibwa and numerous other Native American tribes used this trap for centuries because it doesn't work?

  • Just as I thought, not one video of his own.

  • the fact that i do not shoot videos of my own, make my opinion lesser?

  • YES!!!

The concept that "just having an opinion somehow makes it valid" is rampant these days, and WRONG!

  • yes, only because you are coming off as an armchair hero. . . people who dont have videos come off as all talk and no walk. . . by posting videos of your way of doing things backs up your opinion.

  • so if i start uploading videos you will consider valid my opinion about this trap?

  • where are your videos buddy? if there are better traps then please show us by making a video. . . other wise no one cares what you have to say!

  • @woodcrafter76 Exactly. XD

  • I'm pretty sure I cover that when I talk about the application.

  • @woodcrafter76

Dont feed the trolls and they eventually go away....Great video Steve

  • you can put something attractive for food in front of the tree.

  • What is this Bank line?

  • it's a high pound test line used in catching catfish

  • you can get it at walmart. . . real heavy fishing line. its almost as big as thin twine but very strong!

  • Never heard if it in Australia. Sounds like fly fishing Braid line.

    Cheers mate.

  • sick mp5 at the end... nice nice nice

  • Cool trap for a real survival situation. I hope that everyone knows that it is against federal law to kill all birds except for pigeons, house sparrows and European starlings. Please just use a bird trap in a real survival situation.

  • and pheasant, quail, grouse, waterowl, woodcock, chukkar, dove, crow, snipe. Its just illegal to kill non game migratory birds, birds of prey and osngbirds

  • Game birds yes, but only in season and with a valid hunting license. Unless you like the wonderful smell of a holding cell. Crows and grackles yes to but only if you can prove that the birds were causing a menace or nuisance. Please take my word, I have to defend people who break laws.

  • I don't mind the "thumbs down" but ignorance of the law is no excuse when you're standing in front of a judge.

  • cattnip, I totally agree about knowing the law, and keeping it legal. I show these as survival and self reliance skills. At that point laws of man no longer matter. But I doubt,at least in my state, that you're going to a holding cell over it.

  • Yes - I tried to make sure to make an exception for when your life is at stake in a survival situation. I hope that I sounded respectful because I think that your videos are very good. Its just that a lot of people innocently don't know that most birds are protected as opposed to many other small animals in the wild.

  • These are informative and thorough as they come thanks Steve.

  • it may also make a great squirl trap

  • great video

  • Thanks Critter. I always look forward to your videos. Please keep going!

  • you could also bait the trap, especially in the winter, birds will be all over the thing.

  • great video steve thanks for the tips

  • Great video Steve. Keep up the awesome job....

  • Great Job!

  • hey critter thanks for putting the video up for me

  • It's actually a GSG-5. .22lr . great little plinker.

  • @woodcrafter76

    ....yeah..I soo want one.

  • I've never seen this kind of snare before. You explained it very well. Great job filling in while Dave is away.

    Thanks for posting.

  • well explained, clever trap. now all we need is a stupid bird

  • before everybody goes out and tries this, This is an emergency only trap. Using this for migratory birds or songbirds would be a violation of the migratory bird treaty act, a federal law. So go ahead and build one but dont leave it up for too long . Good skill to know to secure some emergency food

  • it would work nice if you had some snare cable. then the loop would be held open more.

  • Nice work man, Ive enjoyed all the hard work youve been doing. Great job filling in for dave. The learning expierence has been vast TY'

  • cool im going to use this for some bluejay and crow

  • good video! this is the first time ive seen this trap explained well enough i could actually understand how it works.

  • that rock looks like it would rip through any bird that got caught in the snair

  • kewl trap haven't seen it b4 ☆☆☆☆☆ and fave

    stay chill

  • Majic!

  • hey critter, do you have a youtube page?

  • Great vid brother!

  • Awesome, one of my instructors at school uses this type of trap to catch raptors for banding.
