A very creative and interesting trap. Although it consumes a bit of time but for me it is a brilliant. If you have any creative traps and snares, don't forget to email me at:Ariffinhb@yahoo.com
This is not the original ojibwa bird trap. The original used a springy sapling. This is important because the sapling is fasted and less forceful. when the snare closes it is not as tigt as a 2lb rock. This method should work, but a sapling would close the snare faster. It works, but I have always used a sapling. And I have caught a few birds with it. Maybe i will try the rock just to see how it fares against the sapling.
I have tried to get this trap to work, and I have never been successful. And besides, the rock he's using here is so heavy it will literally snap a bird's legs right off.
This is really not the best type of snare. Its percentages of catch is not that great. The problem is that the snare won't loop around the bird 90% of the time. I spent my childhood in the woods making traps catching birds, rabbits, raccoons, and possums. Snares work better if the snare is laying flat in the shape of a circle.
@fborcic Did you watch the video? He says near the end that it would work great in a grassy meadow or near a creek, etc. You should think about watching before commenting.
That would make a nice dead fall trap, too. Forget the noose and instead run a trip wire tied to the perch stick down to a forked stake and under the rock to another stake.
I think the bug rock is a bit much, maybe a smaller one or a piece of wood? you don't want enough weight to break the bird's legs and it might escape to suffer, that's the opposite of what you want if you have the choice.
@flamedrag18 broken legs would prevent the bird from escaping as easily since the unusable legs would be held with greater force. Besides that, you just have to use what is availiable. Rocks aren't found just anywhere. so you are stuck with what you find, and you need a good sized rock in order to beat the reflexes of a wild bird.
@wayfaringcoyote if you break the legs, all there's left is the skin, which isn't very strong, it'll break and the bird can escape, thus die a suffering death unless it's lucky enough to be caught by a predator.
this is why I prefer the flexed limb method of tension, just take a smaller sapling(needs to be flexible) and tie it upside down on the main pole or sapling, then connect the snare rope to the sapling's tip, when the trap is set, the sapling is bend into a half moon, keeping tension on..
@wayfaringcoyote trigger stick and when triggered, keep steady, light pressure on the bird's legs so it doesn't escape at all, a smaller rock or pieces of wood would suffice as weights too.
@1stab no he didnt. he talked about making it stand alone in a meadow or making it a look out perch for a bath in a creek. these are both effective tacticts used by native americans who obviously thrived from traps like this.
@1stab they either baited it or they put it the middle of a field, this way it looks attractive as a high point where they can keep watch or escape from predators(this is why I like burying my stick deeply and making it tall, upwards of 8 feet)
I would think that the loop should be as small as possible (but about the same size as the stick). This would increase the chances of actually catching it by the feet. Also you can bait the stick (peanut butter?). Nice vid.
@jlott00 you my friend are a fucking idiot if you are in a survival situation sertain berries nuts mushrooms and any left over crumbs can become a full meal
@jlott00 Hey your a real dick douce fuckn hell you ass-jack if it wasnt for Jarheads you wouldnt have the freedom of being the guy that slurps cum out of ur dads butthole so fucks ya pussy internet kid

have you actually ever caught something with this trap besides a stick? I have tried this trap and it seems to work in theory yet I have never caught anything. let me see a catch if you would
Hey Steve. Great video. Your knowledge and versatility on the subject of trapping is amazing. I wish I had a tenth of the knowledge you have. No doubt you could and would put food in your stomach given any situation. Keep up the great work....
Bait it with a little something and your odds of catching something increase greatly. Even a bird will land on a specific branch out of thousands---with a little something to eat on it.
Depending on weight, you would probably have to modify slightly for 4 legged critters though.

yes, only because you are coming off as an armchair hero. . . people who dont have videos come off as all talk and no walk. . . by posting videos of your way of doing things backs up your opinion.
Cool trap for a real survival situation. I hope that everyone knows that it is against federal law to kill all birds except for pigeons, house sparrows and European starlings. Please just use a bird trap in a real survival situation.
and pheasant, quail, grouse, waterowl, woodcock, chukkar, dove, crow, snipe. Its just illegal to kill non game migratory birds, birds of prey and osngbirds
Game birds yes, but only in season and with a valid hunting license. Unless you like the wonderful smell of a holding cell. Crows and grackles yes to but only if you can prove that the birds were causing a menace or nuisance. Please take my word, I have to defend people who break laws.
cattnip, I totally agree about knowing the law, and keeping it legal. I show these as survival and self reliance skills. At that point laws of man no longer matter. But I doubt,at least in my state, that you're going to a holding cell over it.
Yes - I tried to make sure to make an exception for when your life is at stake in a survival situation. I hope that I sounded respectful because I think that your videos are very good. Its just that a lot of people innocently don't know that most birds are protected as opposed to many other small animals in the wild.
before everybody goes out and tries this, This is an emergency only trap. Using this for migratory birds or songbirds would be a violation of the migratory bird treaty act, a federal law. So go ahead and build one but dont leave it up for too long . Good skill to know to secure some emergency food
the force of the heavy rock will cut the bird in half!nice Steave!
