I never sit well with the ending. Can't there be a happy ending after all of the hell they went through? I would have rewritten the ending where the dad was going to kill his son first and his son said "Wait!, Dad! Stop! Listen! And hears the motors in the distance.
this makes me soooo excited about Darabont directing "The Walking Dead" which is a b&w comic and has always stated that there would never be a color version of the comic. High hopes and expectations. yay

I get his "ARTIST" point...
HOWEVER.. he comes from a different generation where folks weren't isolated from " REAL" life, sitting in front of their computers ...searching for entertainment that will make them feel like they're living in the REAL world. So yeah we want entertainment that looks and sounds as "REAL" as possible. Although I do love Blk & white movies, they are a reflection of a specific time in our ever changing cultural history.
@dexterville, the entire reason movies and stories are magical is because they are SEPARATE from real life. They (or at least they used to) always spoke of possibilites and other worlds. You younger people who always demand things look as soullessly plastic and "clean" have ushered in this new age where all our entertainment is a dead looking as a reality TV show. Instead of taking the viewer to new lands, these new plastic images just sit there in the same mundane living room you occupy.
I too prefer the black and white version. It's more bleak/claustrophobic which suits the movie better. Also, IMO, the CGI looks BETTER in B&W than in color and more believable.
I agree with everything you say though. The people who hate this movie, are probably the types who will give endless speeches about the genius of Rob Zombie. I dont understand how people who read Kings ending cant understand that this was the intended ending. Drayton at the end says he will do exactly as his movie counterpart does if all hope is lost. Are you happy ending people all on anti-depressants or something?
'The Mist' is the best pure horror movie in the last decade, easy. It's the perfect blend of psychological terror and monster horror. For me, only one other movie has managed to blend those two things together so skillfully in my opinion and that's 'John Carpenter's The Thing'.
Just watch, if someone complains about how they hated 'The Mist', ask them is they liked 'The Thing'. If they give you a blank stare or say "no", never listen to their opinions on horror movies again.
Totally agree, and I think Darabont is very aware of it. In the very beggining, when David is painting, one of the paintings he has (as maybe one of his own) is the poster for The Thing.
What Frank says about young people not watching B&W is sadly very true. Many younger movie viewers won't even give something presented in B&W a chance which is such a shame, because some new films shot in B&W or classic B&W films have such an incredible atmosphere to them that would be totally ruined if shot in color.
I'm going to do my best to make sure my kids appreciate good B&W films and not simply dismiss them.
@ClaviusBase, Kids today don't seem to want to chew their own food. Any images that even remotely "threaten" to make them wonder or dream about possibility beyond the end of their nose (which is what moving images used to always do) cause an almost violent rejection in them. Witness the rise of frame interpolation. Even the slightly surreal otherwordly transport of 24 fps is too much "work" for them, so they need those extra frames to ensure that everything is a mundane as a reality TV show.
please answer me back when is the mist DVD release iam dieing waiting, do any one knows when are the reales now even better with black and white. thank you?
Is there any way to find out when or if we can see this on the big screen in the UK? There's a whole audience the studio seems to be ignoring. I'll be getting the DVD but I know I'm missing out on an amazing cinema experience. Monster smash big screen!
Loved the movie...up till that terrible ending. If you want to see the book ending, do a search here on YouTube for 'The Novella Cut'...lemme know what ya think...;)
funny cause i thought the novella ending was terrible! to me the movie was aces! and did you make that novella cut? cause the vid has the same username as you.
Darabont is a legend. His commentaries for Shawshank & Green Mile are my all-time faves - he clearly loves his art with geekish joy, which is great for us.
FCastle6969 - The reality is turning the color off on your set won't do what he's doing. This isn't just turning the color off, but balancing the black and whites - scene for scene - creating a heightened contrast - on a scene for scene basis. And having a grain to create that aesthetic look he was wanting.
@WastedPo, ur so on point... Nuff Said...
