As far as I'm aware; the mentioning of Isa and Maryam (peace be upon them both) is because as a Christian he held the belief of Jesus's divinity/trinity etc... and now testifies (during his shahada) that he has relinquished such ideologies as they are irreconcilable with Islam.

This means "I testify and witness that there is no god worthy of being worshipped other than Allah and that Mohammad is his Messenger." You must say it and believe in it.
