  • this shit is awesome those tambourines are huge i wish i was 38 again my teeth are falling out of my face. Oh man it was such a great time being there with my huge parka on.. If only I hadn't tripped on that old man's hat

  • Drumming... sounds like adam and the ants. and that bass. it's like.... bumvz bumbum bumvz... and dem geetars are like... pre-sonic youth nuttiness.

  • Did Syd Barrett know about that guitar "solo"?

  • Three vultures pick the life out of a dead guitar. Ace video.

  • I can bet that these Monks have no idea in whose name John, the Baptist, Angel of Israel baptised Jewish men in water? Why He did not baptise a woman or a Gentile?

These are blind guides leading the blind to Pit. Prayer counted in the Old Covenant when the demiurge creator god Yahweh could not listen but our Father is Omniscient. Then why waste time in Prayers and not ponder over His Word? The End of the world is around the corner. Matt.13.v24-30 is being fulfilled. Second coming of Christ...

  • @nijjhar1 You're a nutjob. This is the catchiest shit ever written,

  • @nijjhar1 Best youtube comment I ever read.

  • @nijjhar1 Go fuck a priest, a nun, a rabi, some saints as well and a duck. Fuck religion and dumb ass religious comments. Second coming of Christ? Christ was in the damn crowd jamming out to this music and you're fucking a duck. Go figure. Can I have an Amen?

  • @DragonChaserKev Amen. True religion is in the soul, not worn on your sleeve to piss people off. MUSIC is the greatest religion ever. Wars fought for music: 0

  • @JustOneMeatPuppet Music is an invented religion that didn't exist until recording technology was available. Those who worship it worship false gods......

  • @straydogbluesman Yeah yeah, whatever, man...

  • @JustOneMeatPuppet You couldn't very well worship it without the videos, recordings, and other media that technology has made it possible. Goons like you are why I'd catch more flack saying I was glad Mark David Chapman popped John Lennon than I would if I said I was glad Jesus was crucified.

  • @straydogbluesman Wow, you somehow persist with this brain-dead topic... You know me so well, don't you? Otherwise, you wouldn't accuse me of hypothetical bullshit that might happen to you.

One last time: if religion means peace of mind, then music is religion for me. It doesn't mean I worship Lennon, I just really like his music. Please remove your head from the inside of your ass and lower that sanctimonious finger you're pointing at complete strangers.

  • @JustOneMeatPuppet Religion doesn't mean peace of mind. Lennon sucks.

  • @straydogbluesman Ok, man, good for you...

  • Fitzroy North, circa. 2010

  • way way ahead of their time - buy black monk time - jaw droppingly good nearly 50 years later

  • Unbelievable that they went across the garage flow of the 60s. Really brave guys. The music was also quite different from the 60's garage rock. My hobby is to rediscover all those great band from the 60s that didn´t "broke through. It´s a fantastic musical treasure. Listen for example to The Music Machine (Talk, talk), The Golliwogs (Tell me) and of course THE ZETTLERS and their recordings "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". Really f.....g good with a bloody driving beat.

  • A-fucking Mazing...didn't like it at the time though. (long hair was EVERYTHING)

These dudes where so brave ,to make that anti Beatle statement. (Although they liked 'm ofcourse)

  • I'm pretty sure all of these guys had children. If I'm not mistaken, their sons formed a band called Mutemath.

  • irre intro

  • Listen to that fuzz bass!!!!

  • these guys are fucking amazing.........

  • As a first timer I am mega impressed, why haven't I heard of these guys before???

  • This is like the trashmen meet John Cage....in fukk'in credible

  • rape gretsch

  • Fast forward to 1:10. I'm about 99.9% certain that this exercise was what inspired iPad's hands-on upgrade of GarageBand.

  • And thus there was Punk, and it was awesome.

  • Why in the fuck aren't The Monks more heard of?!

  • amazing music...i've become intrigued and cannot imagine hearing this music at the time produced...

  • The Residents must have been into this band.

  • This the most savage yet beautiful thing ive ever seen.

  • These guys had such great energy onstage.

  • I never heard of these guys, till this minute, wow, very different

  • Geez, I'd be the first one in the monastery if monks chanted like these Monks.

  • @ShapelyDice You didn't think they were really about chastity and that stuff right? Why do you think they make all those different kinds of beer in monasteries? Crazy party people man, those monks. XD

  • I've looked, but there seems to be no studio version of monk chant.

  • Dear Mr Gismconfuse.......I am no longer reading your comments since you very rudely and childishly left comments on my profile. You are now blocked and I am not even deigning to read your nonesense on this thread. You are a very immature and silly man.

  • why is it that anyone who doesnt like the monks for one reason or another are deemed "stupid" and "wrong." anything you guys have to say is just OPINION, like me. AND JUST TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT, NONE OF THEM OPPOSED VIETNAM IT WAS JUST A MARKETING STUNT THEY SAID IT THEMSELVES.

  • the Monks were, possibly the most "out there" unknown group of the 60's. Really ahead of their time, strange and abrasive, they would have been quite a blast (listen to "blast off" off Black Monk Time)

I believe, after many listens, that they are VERY talented musicians, possibly expressing an anti-war message in their lyrics/music. Mind blowing stuff!

  • the monks sucked!

  • @GISMCONFUSE Seriously? You can't have a true appreciation of music if you don't like the Monks and if you are just saying it to be predictably and unimaginatively trollish.....how dull! P.S. I am certain your gism really does confuse you! It has obviously skewed your musical appreciation beyond all redemption and pre- pubescent boys are normally confused by their first semenal projection.

  • @jwattie yes, seriously. and my gism has confused me? wow clever. anyways, the "monks" were a bunch of hypacritical douchbags that were made and modified by german producers (not very good ones obviously) and uhhhh.... yeah, they sucked ass.

  • @GISMCONFUSE .....good grief. Troll.Faaaagggit!

  • @jwattie a troll isn't someone who simply disapproves of a video and comments on his thoughts. and faaaaaagggit is spelt with an O.

  • @GISMCONFUSE Haha! It was a reference to a sketch about trolls, I'm perfectly aware of how to spell the word faggot thank you and if you had a valid argument other than something "sucks ass" as you so eloquently put it then maybe your opinion would be more valid. As it stands I doubt many people would take your criticism seriously simply because you are unable to express yourself.

  • @GISMCONFUSE Oh and another thing, I have blocked you so you will no longer be able to post silly comments on my profile. If you don't like my taste in music move on but judging from the music on your profile which is pretty immature and unsophisticated I doubt you would have the good sense to do something so sensible. If you really are 47 then you should be ashamed of your infantile behaviour! Just pathetic!

  • @jwattie Im.Nineteen.Bitch.

  • @jwattie I am actually very able to express myself, but I didn't necessarily WANT anyone to take me all that seriously. It seems however, that you yourself have fallen for my supposed futile attempt at being a "troll". And what was that about the Music I listen to? Immature?! I'm guessing anything "hip-hop" is garbage in your opinion? And by the way, Im nineteen years old, not 47. And yeah... there is nothing on my page more unsophisticated than the monks.

  • @GISMCONFUSE Hip hop isn't garbage but the music you have on your channel isn't hip hop. It is a pale, shitty imitation of he music my generation made. The Monks wipe the floor with any piece of shit, plageurised crap your music has to offer sunshine!

  • @jwattie six months later and your fuckin cunt ass is still rambling... get a life you fucknut

  • @GISMCONFUSE This from the man (and I'm using that term in it's loosest form obviously!) who responded in a few days? The very reason I didn't reply for six months is because unlike you I don't feel the need to hang around waiting for a response to my posts on you tube because it's the only attention from the opposite sex that I'm likely to get! I shall probably be off for another six months now because cretinous little boys bore the shit out of me.....bye!!!!

  • @jwattie yea bye fuck off now

  • the missing link...

  • I love how hard that guy on the left is clapping at the very end.

  • The Monks were Punks?

  • WOW! Proves that the Army drafted some real geniuses back in those awful days... these guys were AWESOME!

  • Strictly a novelty act whose music can be categorized as "Music for people who don't have any friends"

  • @TeenCretin and you're music taste consists of?

  • @TeenCretin If that's the case then you should be a big fan.

  • @TeenCretin Whereas you listen to "music for people who don't have any friends and think following trends and listening to what everyone else listens to will help", which unfortunately is sadder.

  • Kraftwerk on jungle speed

  • The Monks Rock!!!!!, been exposing musician's to them for the last ten years!

  • This is great music

  • the guy to the left of the chick at the start looks a bit like Lee havard oswald haha,

  • green day are kind of hot and miss nowadays but american idiot was good.dookie good./great.imsomniac .great/good.theres 2 kinds of music good and bad.green day are good..dont blame them for their imitators..sum 41 are shit for example...ragging on green day is just plain dumb pal.wise up

  • @stankler I have never once considered green day punk, and find that those who do should actually research punk as a genre and the musicians who made it what it is. Punk is dead. little suburbanites with mohawks and bleached hair are in no way punk. iggy pop is punk. charged spikey hair and songs about rebellion are pop rock punk cash-ins. green day is the same a good charlotte. they make a living off of teen angst. you, should wise up and learn that music is subjective and genres are not.

  • Some pretty damn nice drumming, too. Cool.

  • looks like 15 people need to get their priorities in order.

  • Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll.

Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll.

  • Does anyone know how they got that bass tone?

  • @atovarn7 Eddie Shaw is using a Gibson EBO5 w/either a Selmer amp w/18" speaker or a Vox Foundation amp & speaker.

  • There are like a million punk bands that claim to be the original punk band or the only true punk band. And here is the real thing, punk without even trying to be punk, Isn't that the ultimate punk? And, almost as a contradiction, better than the would-bes.

  • One of the maddest bands and stories in Rock history, so far ahead of anything its hard to believe, the fact that they were GI's makes it even more incredible!

  • This is awesome, you posted this. Thanks.

  • @chridonn thank you! i was thinking that too

  • I used to try to play melodically when I did keyboard solos. Now I only play like Larry Clark.

  • This is from 1965. Higgle-dy Piggle-dy Danny.

  • RAW and Rare and Wierd. Nice One Monks.

  • the first part sounds like a misfits song

  • Its like TV on the Radio, only decades earlier!

  • that scared the fuck out of me

  • There's nothing holy about this crap!

  • attitude, but no heart

  • I Get chills every fucking time

  • These guys were US soldiers stationed in Germany. I'm surprised the army let them get away with those haircuts. Gotta love those drums and that fuzz bass.

  • Wow, a Philicorda organ with a Klemt Echolette tape delay - drooool... Overend Watts (bassist of Mott the Hoople) is one of the Monks biggest fans. Class!

  • in 60's not only beatles changed popular music....

  • Comment removed

  • I just saw their DVD on eBay, The Transatlantic Feedback. Very hard to find.

  • @thecuckookid Sundance Channel had it on today. Awesome!!!

  • they were so so so rad, extremely influential... one of the first bases of punk and art rock. although they didn't beat out the kinks... debase me all you want i don't care

  • They were doin' this wld-ass shit in 1965!

  • Love it! Sure play a guitar like Ouija Board...why not?...who knows what forces you'll summon. Also, I've never seen so many big tambourines! Looks like a wacked-out opening ceremony for some subcultural Olympics! Yep they're friggin' Gods. And don't forget to check out the GODZ.

  • r they real bald spots?

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9 nope the Monks actually shaved those in their heads -- that is commitment!

  • @stdrange hmmmmmmmm.......... creative.

  • @stdrange is that where peter gabriel got the idea?

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9 tonsures, really,

  • This song reminds me a bit of Love & Rockets. Perhaps The Monks had an influence on them.

  • Man, every video I watch of these guys is better.

  • Everyone check out CORDUROY00's uploads of ALL The Monks "Beat Club" performances. PRISTINE! It never fails to blow my mind (and I say this on every Monks video) that I went from seeing these guys in Feb. of '06 right here on YT, to meeting Dave and Eddie only a few months later. I wrote Dave a letter for a T-shirt, he wrote me back, and on July 1, '06 I went to the L.A. premier of "The Transatlantic Feedback" and met both Dave and Eddie. R.I.P Dave....miss ya.

  • WOW...I thought I was fortunate to be living in Seattle in the early-mid 90's during the whole grunge thing...but it turns out that what I really missed was Germany circa mid 60's

  • i dance best to monk chant

  • Proper fuzz tones!

  • 1:13 : the 2001: A Space Odyssey of guitar solos.

    all hail the Monks

  • how many years ahead in time?

  • @suricatafari not too many

  • very nice one!!!

  • Green day? FUCK THAT SHIT! PABST BLUE RIBBON!

  • this is fucking out of orderly good.

  • The Monks are like the Parents or grandparents of Muse... I swear Muse sounds just like this... Amazing... WAYY ahead of their time!

  • Passion.

  • is this on black monk time?

  • Great band the monks but if you'll listen to the peruvian band Los saicos and the songs demoler, Alcatraz, el gato mayor recorded 1964, you'll agree with Iggy pop and the singer of the Cramps they were punks before the punk started

  • ah know that area pretty well, got mates up there. yeah liked what i 'eard from vivian girls (albeit not much) and of course eighties matchbox will do any day of the week. if they (VG) play somewhere real small i'll ave a gander, can't hack big venues, cheers for heads up mate

  • you heard Liars? 'They stuck us all in a trench and put a monument on top' and 'they were wrong, so we drowned' are both awesome albums. Also a band called McClusky that imploded far too soon and The Walkmen who sound nothing like the other bands but are the real deal. you from salford then? i'm based in south manchester

  • Good screen-name man, my fave Fall song.

  • cheers mate (some bastard had taken my favourite - Newfaceinhell - which always works so well on forums...)

  • LOL - on some forums I was "MarkESmithIsGod" but it took too long to type. Cheers.

  • Ah, the 60s and 70s had such quality dancing in the audience.

  • @rancidsexbeast

    monks 60's

    can 70's

    the fall 80's

    the fall 90's

    the fall 00's

    but i am biased...

  • The stuff of legend!!!! Long live the Monks!!!!!!!

  • Ah, just got done playing "Black Monk Time" on my turntable. Had to come and post some Monks on Facebook. All I've been through with this band is such a trip. From first seeing them on You Tube in Feb. of '06 to meeting Dave and Eddie in July '06 to keeping in contact with Dave up until his passing in Jan. of '08. Guys I love the fact you've been getting your due over these years, may God continue to bless your musical legacy. I've love to be able to see you again Dave. In heaven someday.

  • predates fred frith tabletop guitar

  • fuck green day, and long live THE MONKS!!!

that´s real punk and not the bullshit of today like green day and co.

  • @catrileo68 why would you even mention green day in the same breath as the legendary monks give me a break the monks are so much more superior to those commercial sell outs

  • @floydian1987 Because there was also a punk band from the 70's called The Monks.

  • @catrileo68 omg not that punk stuff

  • Love this

  • wegweisend

  • no these are not munks

  • And who said the American military was good for nothing?

  • XD so true XD great comment!!!

  • Ja, lang lebe die US Armee!

  • @Volkmarshausen German artists reeducated the former US occupational soldiers via deconstruction of beat music, result: The monks.

  • @bimhimbim I'm not sure that is true....they already had a very deeply ingraned american blues influence which is perfectly influential in their music. I don't doubt Germanic music of the time would have an effect, they wee rised in the great american jazz era so must have been influenced. The music whch followed was wonderful though and the german peopl really appreciated the music in it's purest form.

  • @jwattie It is the result of a pop music deconstruction experiment. Of course they are highly gifted.

  • The Devo of the 60s!

  • so damn good!!

  • monks are monks theres no one else like these guys

  • @fuzzbuzzuk well the sonics are kinda like them a litle bit, and there's some strange Japanese US army base music that isn't totally unlike this either. No one did it quite like the monks though so, true enough.

  • It's like the Fall, Kraftwerk and Can are having a party. Outstanding.

  • this song is to short!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The absolute antithesis of the beatles and one of my all time favorite bands. Thanks for posting this.

  • Btw. it's a PHILIPS PHILICORDA organ and a KLEMMT ECHOLETTE effect ( maybe modified ) wich are creating this great sound ( to see in the video )...

    Kind regards - Thommy

  • @ThommyCortina that's the most wicked sounding organ i think i've ever heard. we used to plug a friend's continental into a univox super fuzz and get a great tone, but that's beyond crazy! thanks for the model names

  • jeff large dig this

  • Wow this is fucking brilliant

  • Original music!

  • Overdriven keyboard, bass distortion that sounds like that amp should have melted to the floor, and 5 tambourines at once....yep, definitely checking this band out more.

  • There is this documentary called "The monks - the transatlantic feedback", or something like that. Try to get hold of it. I think there is also a version in English.

BTW, I love those hipnotical drums

  • That drumbeat IS rock'n'roll.

  • the circle jerk on the guitar is so fked. love.

  • 5 ex american soldiers and two ahead of their time German managers produced the best band in the 1960's...they were the beginning of industrial....techno..

  • For me the 60s' version of the Butthole Surfers

  • wait, wait, I mean the 60s version of Devo...

wait, wait, I mean in spirit, yeah, ok, that'll do

  • who was first

  • hahaha.

    Germany is our future colony.

    They study English.
