  • Great K5LA

  • Yahoo'd CSX GMS2. Results call it the CSX Track Inspection Car.

  • That is a GRMS car (Gage Restraint Measurement System). It travels down the track applying force on the rails to simulate the weight of a locomotive. By measuring track under load it can detect any geometrical deviation (gage, cross level, warp, alignment, and profile) from what the FRA has mandated for a particular class of track.

It does not check the rail itself for cracks or internal flaws; that is done by the Sperry car.

It also does not check rail wear in curves; that is done by a vehi

  • what the hell is that?

  • This is a track inspector machine that looks for CRACKS in tracks when it finds a crack it marks the crack W paint or something ? I seen 1 of these in MARION ILL do the same thing as described above SCANNER MAN ( programs all kinds of railroads into scanners )

  • because they got money and where bored so they wanted you to ask questions

  • You can see the box that houses the lasers right behind the lead truck. It is looking at the wear on the rail and compares it to what that track looks like when it is new. This way the RR knows when a section of rail is in need of change. It also tells them if a stretch of track is wearing too fast so they can look at it.

  • I wish we had a train like that

  • track geometry car, no question about it. awesome catch man!

  • From CSX Equipment Handling Rules: (p36)

    C. GRMS/TSAV Equipment (Gauge Restraint Measurement System)

    GRMS/TSAV equipment includes:

    • GRMS 1.

    • GRMS 2. (The lead car seen in this video)

  • It is a CSX geometry car, used for inspecting the tracks! (I cheated... :( )

  • inspection car. im gesing yousod know this frum your user name >:(

  • @BaltimoreAndOhioRR

It is used to check the welds on the track and it also checks the gantry and any overhead power source for a good power flow.

  • Looks like something they found in the junkyard. lol

  • Looks like something they found in the junkyard. lol

  • CSX #GRMS-2 This is a Plasser & Theurer model EM-GRMS "Guage Restraint Measusing System" Track Inspection Car built in Austria

  • It's a rail geometry checking car.

  • Comment removed

  • It's really used to make the honking sound when it goes by. See, it works good! :-)

  • @33 second you hear the operator call a "Clear" signal PA and say GMS 2 out. GMS is the designator for Geometry/Maintenance/Self Propelled -2

  • Track Geometry Car. These cars can continuously check the tracks at speeds of 70 mph. If the car finds a defect, it instantly sprays paint on the location of the problem.

  • it is the traxk evaluation car

  • It's a train version of a shortbus.

  • This is a track service vehicle. It checks the track for consistency and vibration.

  • Its the local sex train. Jump aboard to get eht ride of your life.

  • what is it for

  • If I'm wrong correct me but this looks like its either at savage marc station in maryland or jessup station in maryland.

  • @Rztaylorjr - yes, savage

  • It's a Geometry Car, basically it's like the UP EC-5 i caught a while back, it scans the rails for defections and probably alignment of the rails.

Didn't know CSX had one, it looks so cool :D

  • Looks Like a Sperry, Could Be wrong, But looking at the video twice most i could get out is that it's probably for inspecting track, Most likely Welded Rail, Where was this filmed? Cause I saw Roughly the same Unit In Hudson, NY about 2 months Ago, Pretty Sure It's the same car shown here *Wouldn't have a clue how many of these they own*

  • @mountainlova1009 This was at Savage Station in Maryland

  • @BaltimoreAndOhioRR whats odd to me is usually railroads will have what they are on the side of them that mysterious box doesn't say what it is. :P bummer

  • @mountainlova1009 lol i was thinking about saying the same thing about inspecting track, but then i decided to look wat everyone else said first lol. but yeah i concur

  • Oh thats my house It moves around on wheels. Sorry I honked at you, I was kinda pissed off I was gonna get my house seized so I was running away.

  • Its symbol is GRMS2 and its an advanced type geometry car. After it inspects a subdivision expect many slow orders.

  • light transport?

  • i caught something similar hhere in central texas long time ago see my video response

  • I'd say that would be a train for checking the track. My best guess anyway.

  • ballast railcar

  • Its a mysterious box of awesomeness

  • @DAL3294 ya!

  • Yep. Geometry/track checking car. I've got pics of one these(maybe the same) cars sitting in the Nashville CSX yard.

It collects data about the tracks so they know what needs fixing.

  • GRMS-2 CSX Geometry Car Great catch!

  • @streetcarbrad No R on this one! Is different from the one I had seen pictures of.

  • I believe this is a geometry car due to the prefix (GMS). We have them come into the yard here in Jax all the time and they are capable of running on their own power, however, they are typically pulled by an engine.

  • very cool

  • Thats cool. Never saw that kind of track vehicle before.

Where they using it on the light rail track?

  • @SeeYouNextFall ---With the fence, it looks like the light rail, but these are CSX tracks

  • Now that is a job...Yeah!!!

  • Man that's a nice horn for a test car.
