This movie is probably the deepest "hollywood" has ever gone, "theosophically" ... in my opinion, from a mythology standpoint, and from someone who has a deep interest in parables and archetypal memes, this is one of the greatest movies ever made.
@monkeygoodcipherbad1 ... that is not to say the modern cinema is not laden with such things, its that nowadays things are more occult. The 7 Faces of Dr Lao is very up front in explaining itself, while the more learned mind can enjoy the mythological paralells to the sluggishly "evolving" (hardly an adequate word) psychosocial behavior of modern man. Modern movies containing archetypal themes tend to bury the meaning behind dumbed down plot and dialogue with distracting, overdone effects.
@monkeygoodcipherbad1 ... the 7 Faces of Dr Lao is basically the same story as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... with the exception of the presentation of more classical mythological themes. In it's essence, the film is a presentation of the seven deadly sins, their avatars, and the consequences of interacting with such avatars..with a conclusion that displays the nature of the sane and due vanity that is the personality behind the faces of Dr Lao...who audaciously keeps a hydra as a pet.
@monkeygoodcipherbad1 ... even then it is hard to explain the true depth of spirit in this movie. it is as though a messenger of the creator of the universe had written the script...
Some movies should not be remade and this is a cult classic. But if there was a case for remaking this, it should be given to Terry Gilliam. He would do it justice. But only him.
No sound (maybe my computerm, but if you have some info, it'll help. Many thanks!
