You can see as he comes to the first chicane, off to the right you can see the "old" track lifting up as it would enter the first banked corner (the have grand stands on top of it in this vid)
On-board cameras: Like some have noted, this has been done for many decades. In the 1960s, it was not all that unusual as some racing coverage used it and even oil company commercials and on TV series. I was always riveted when the road racing prepped Camaro would go under the GULF bridge at 145 on one TV ad. Also, the TV series, Mannix, in September1968 had an episode which opened at a race course. There's much good footage of the open-wheel formula car he's driving with some in-car.
the way Laffite is driving around Monza is soo masterful, I mean ecverything is in total harmony and that Matra V12 just howling away like no other V-12 ever thought of doing,
What is that?? Trees in Ascari? Look, they are on the inside of the turn, nice and dangerous, like it should be :-) That will keep drivers from making stupid actions.
I have seen some rather nice V12s and by far the best was the extremely rare Maserati Tipo 64 RearEngine Birdcage V12 at Riverside in 1962. Like a Ferrari on steroids, it was still grasping for traction down the straight at 150+. I don't think it started, and like all birdcage Maseratis it was physically impossible to assemble the chassis with all welds intact. It represented the final, psychotic break of spaceframes finally rendered obsolete with the Lotus 25 of 1962. See also 'Jim Clark.'
Cameras on F1 'Grand Prix' 1966. Monza here was the same track as the movie, with over and underpasses. It was overly dangerous and massively cut down after Peterson's crash. Lafitte was certainly not in the top drawer of drivers, and the clip was in practice. Crashes at Monza tended to be fatal, and the one with Von Trips in 1961 took out about 20 spectators also.
This reminds me of how much I hate modern curbs in F1. See these curbs? They were CURBS! You had to actually drive on the $#@%ing TRACK. Now the drivers just crash over the curbs as if they weren't there , and complain if they can't.
but nowdays the cars are alot faster through corners, and semi auto gears gives you the benefit of changing gears through corners at 140mph+. which in manuel racing like this you simply cant take your hands of the wheel. its too dangerous.
i respect f1 maunel gearbox era, but if you want to go faster and fster semi auto is the way.
"It just... sounded like power." When somebody describes a race car like that, you know it's something special. Even though you have to turn up the volume, it's worth it to hear this baby roar!
actually... the current Monza isn't much different to that one, only real difference is a different 1st chicane and tighter turns 4 & 5, plus a lot more run-off
Awesome sound but actually neither a relyable nor an extr.powerful engine though ,compared to v12 Ferrari and V8 Ford Cosworth.About driving aids in 1978 the wing cars age got started....till being banned in 1982 if I correctly recall.
Possibly the first major aerod.aid which allowed terrific cornering speeds if just the drivers were daring enough to keep full throttle open in spite of pure skill.
lol Nice coment, but one thing.... monza has at least 4 points of hard breaking, I mean, some points when the car get from 300 km/h to 90-80km/h. The first chicane (forget the name) , Variante della Roggia (the second chicane), Curva del Vialone and the famous Curva Parabolica (the last), needs a lot of brake to make these turns. Is not that easy for the brakes on Monza. Cheers =)
Having started to watch F1 in 1995, I grew loving the V10 (darn the nowadays crappy V8...), and I still love them, but this Matra's V12, when at full power it's mind-boggling powerful!
Just listen to Laffite's exit out of the first chicane at 2:39 or him on the start/finish straight at 2:23.
I went to the 1977 & 1978 U.S. Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. The Ligier Matras were there, and they sounded spectacular.
This isn't to say the Cosworths, Ferraris, Alfas, etc didn't sound good, they did, it's just that the Matra was a cut above. In person, it had a distinct, kind of metallic edge to it's scream. Hard to describe, but you could definitely hear the difference vs the other cars.
My cousin has gone to every single Long Beach GP since 1975 except for 84 (because he and his dad were mad that F1 left). But he told me this is the best sounding engine he's ever heard.
Even though he's not at full chat, that Matra does sound so lovely. I love most V12s, can't think of a crappy sounding one, and on the downshifts, that blip is just loverly...
remember all true F1 fans. Monza 78 was the weekend we lost ronnie peterson. i love watching the retro clips but people died. theese guys are true heroes! sorry about my english (im swedish)
I get this comment all the time, and IMO, it's because of two things. The equipment sucked compared to today's standards, thus the cars are much harder to drive on the limit. This also contributes to the 2nd fact, that the cars were less safe. I personally think that racing today is more entertaining, because drivers are more aggressive and can work the cars better. It more so than anything depends on the form of racing we're talking about, but these here are hard to beat.
oh yea. this is back way before traction control, ABS and horsepower limits. Weather it was a twin turbed V6 or a big American V8, back in the old days of F-1, you could actually race the car....not pilot it.
@nolanbowling Im more of a NASCAR enthusiast (though this bird hums a sweet tune), and I feel as if its the same thing. Given what they were, there was something novice about hearing those beastly groans hum around the track, but then knowing that if you could get into a muscle car and turn a wrench or two, you could get that sound for yourself. These cars are just raw powerful sonic beauty. The race cars of today seem more akin to jet fighters than actual "cars".
Not that I imagine it's easy to drive a modern F1 car , but the older generation of cars with no traction control etc looked impossible. Just look at how much correction is going on at the wheel!

And no driver aids at all and limited downforce. F1 cars back then were driven entirely by drivers, not by drivers helped with computers.

And finally, what a sound from that beautiful engine. Anyone know what type of engine it was?
