The x's to me sound more clearer, but thinner. I like the sound of 'em. The regular 81/85 to me sound bigger and have more mids/bass but harsher. I prefer the regular one's more because of the loud presence to them.....Classic EMG BALLS! I'm getting the Zakk Wylde set to put in a Gibson Les Paul studio (black). I just might opt out to get the chrome ones though.................What do you guys think? Holla at me.
@TheBIGREDDAVE, the X Series came to give more options. I would rather chrome ones for your guitar. I'm restoring a Japanese Ibanez Artist from 80's or 90's and it will be all black. I didn't decide yet if I'll put gold hardware + gold 81/85 or chrome hardware + chrome 81/85. I have both and will decide when it comes back from painting.
@ThePedrowood Well good luck Pedro.... What ever you decide to do, I know it will be a rockin" axe....As long as you put EMG's in it! I'm gettin" the ZW set(black) this week.. Solderless no hassle
@TheBIGREDDAVE - Yeah! They are now solderless! Awesome! I might use it to make another comparative test with 81/85 X 81-X/85-X X JH set. I'm curious about the last one.
@ThePedrowood OH!! I almost forgot about the "Het set"! There's another killer option. The look of the JH set is nice, with the black chrome.JH's in close second.
@surgeyX , I didn't really try the 60 or the 60-X yet (I'm considering tests with them too) but the comparision probably is the same. The good news is you only need to unplug your 81\60 and plug your 81-X\60-X. I love quick connect cables!
@xXMUurTXx, that more or less wood characteristics regarding active or passive pickups is a fairy tale, a myth. Pickups and its characteristics are the sound timbral base. The wood species chosen work as a superior harmonics filter. The difference between active and passive pickups are the actives internal preamp editing its basic timbral characteristics. The guitar timbral base will be the pickups and will be always there, just as the superior harmonics filter. There's no difference.
@ThePedrowood thanx for the info man, there is plenty of different information about passive - active stuff, mine is just an observation for example compare "machine head" and "stone sour" sounds; phill demmel (MH) uses an alder body v whereas Jim Root (stone sour) uses a mahogany telecaster both in nearly same tuning as i know; despite of the difference of wood type, i heard more or less the same tone.
@xXMUurTXx, the sound came from the player. Any guitar plays alone. The same guitar played by two different players will sound differently. The player sound is composed by the player and its playability, their equipment, their effects, their equialization, etc. To compare something you`ll need to equalize the other variables. This 81/85 vs. 81-X/85-X comparision equalized all variables, so it`s reliable. You can`t trust any colclusion based on different players playng different instruments.
thanks for this test, very nice comparison...the x set seems to sound better, but are there differences in terms of playability between the normal and the x set?
@diabloEbrigida, better and worse come from personal opinions. I believe the playability on the same instrument depends on the musician. The sets are not much different. The difference is quite sutil.

I think the X in the clean portion of video seem to have fuller clearer lower end.

here are my conclusions from this clip
metalheads -> go for the normal ones
if you happen to play various types of music, including metal, -> PUT IN DA X

Thanks for the video-- I was looking for this comparison. And it helps convince me to stick with the regular EMG's. Thanks!
