I did not include Dai Vernon as I know of no place where his performances can be watched by the public, and he is unknown to anyone but magicians and magic historians.
Criss Angel on the other hand, can be said to be responsible for the resurgence and renewed popularity of magic, and for making it mainstream. He has won numerous prestigeous magic awards as well :)

@elvemage32 The Masked Magician, aka Val Valentino, is hated among magicians due to his exposure of magic & illusions. I wouldn't include him for that very reason, plus the fact that he's only a mediocre peformer at best. He got famous on exposure, not talent.

On the contrary, he took his time doing his escapes, which was part of his showmanship, because that's what's important in entertainment, not speed.

A whole lot of ridiculous heated debate here. This quite a mixed up list of magicians all of which are good at the type of magic that they specialize in. Glad to see the mention of Martin Lewis a great magic inventor. I remember seeing Dixie Dooley when he started in the south on the local newscasts. In terms of bringing magic to a large mass of people some on this list just dont belong.

@petewat98 For the record we must not forget about the Great Lance Burton & nice run of US TV Specials in the 90's sometime between the end of Copperfields TV dominance & before Blaine was big. Lance did a chained escape from the tracks of a roller coaster with seconds to spare on TV (live I think) nearly 10 years before Angel did similar stunts. Also Penn & Teller TV specials too around same time. Angel idolizes both acts & they appeared on his own show. Angel watched & learned from them too.

In my opinion, Dixie Dooley is a far better magician than Blaine, who started out with magic store tricks and camera editing (for his Balducci levitation) and went on to those idiotic, and inane demonstrations.
And while I totally agree that Lance Burton is a far better magician than Criss Angel will ever be, if you stopped people on the street, most would know who Criss is, but not Lance.
@DavidCopsafeel I'd put the Dixie/ Blaine issue up for debate, but that's a conversation for another time. As for Angel being well known, he's just a product of his time. In the late 80's and 90's Burton was as much of a household name as Angel is now. Just as Angel's star will fade when the next generation takes the lime light.
@Lon1324 Agreed Henning TV shows grew from Blackstone Jr specials. Copperfield tv shows grew from Henning TV specials. Blaine changed everything to edgy street TV & spectacle magic and Angel grew from that. You will never hear Angel utter anything about Blaine ever cause he knows he started his TV career copying the Blaine magic show "formula", and he still does, but with a more "flamboyant / artsy" style. Pretty boy dressed down goth rocker thing goin on. Good TV magic show though.
I agree with some of your choices, but Blackstone should be higher on the list. I had the good fortune of meeting him twice, the second time being at a local S.A.M. gathering when we hosted him. What a great all around magician and down to earth guy!

@drumshit016 Agreed Blaine deserves mention for reviving network TV interest in magic shows again. Blaine primed the massed for Angel's show. Wet their appetite so to speak. In fact Angel follows the Blaine show formula exactly. First three quarters of show is close up or small group type effects then one big final illusion or stunt he talks about here & there all through the show. Building the suspense of "real" danger till the end. Angels show IS exactly like Baline did it. Copperfiled did too

Actually, Copperfield has received numerous awards, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Living Legend Award from the Library of Congress and the Magician of the Year from the Academy of Magical Arts. But of course, Houdini is the inspiration for nearly every magician in the world, I would think. He is a legend in magic and escape artistry, whose name will live forever.

A whole lot of ridiculous heated debate here. This quite a mixed up list of magicians all of which are good at the type of magic that they specialize in. Glad to see the mention of Martin Lewis a great magic inventor. I remember seeing Dixie Dooley when he started in the south on the local newscasts. In terms of bringing magic to a large mass of people some on this list just dont belong.
Hey this is YOUR list. Angel gets on my nerves but he does at least acknowledge the greats on his show.

@petewat98 Not gonna thumbs down u but even as big an ego as Chris Angel has he would say Houdini IS the greatest. He's said so many, many times on his own show. TV & Internet (i e youtube) has allowed Angel to be more popular worldwide in less time than Houdini could ever dream yet he does Houdini's illusions & stunts & improves them breaking his records with 21st century technology. Movies barley even had sound back then. Angel also owes ALOT of his TV ideas to Henning, Copperfield & Blaine.

@petewat98 For the record we must not forget about the Great Lance Burton & nice run of US TV Specials in the 90's sometime between the end of Copperfields TV dominance & before Blaine was big. Lance did a chained escape from the tracks of a roller coaster with seconds to spare on TV (live I think) nearly 10 years before Angel did similar stunts. Also Penn & Teller TV specials too around same time. Angel idolizes both acts & they appeared on his own show. Angel watched & learned from them too.

Quite a well composed list. I really respect Houdini very much, and so would anyone do if they read his boigraphy.

In my opinion, Dixie Dooley is a far better magician than Blaine, who started out with magic store tricks and camera editing (for his Balducci levitation) and went on to those idiotic, and inane demonstrations.
And while I totally agree that Lance Burton is a far better magician than Criss Angel will ever be, if you stopped people on the street, most would know who Criss is, but not Lance.

@DavidCopsafeel I'd put the Dixie/ Blaine issue up for debate, but that's a conversation for another time. As for Angel being well known, he's just a product of his time. In the late 80's and 90's Burton was as much of a household name as Angel is now. Just as Angel's star will fade when the next generation takes the lime light.

@Lon1324 Agreed Henning TV shows grew from Blackstone Jr specials. Copperfield tv shows grew from Henning TV specials. Blaine changed everything to edgy street TV & spectacle magic and Angel grew from that. You will never hear Angel utter anything about Blaine ever cause he knows he started his TV career copying the Blaine magic show "formula", and he still does, but with a more "flamboyant / artsy" style. Pretty boy dressed down goth rocker thing goin on. Good TV magic show though.

I agree with some of your choices, but Blackstone should be higher on the list. I had the good fortune of meeting him twice, the second time being at a local S.A.M. gathering when we hosted him. What a great all around magician and down to earth guy!

@drumshit016 Agreed Blaine deserves mention for reviving network TV interest in magic shows again. Blaine primed the massed for Angel's show. Wet their appetite so to speak. In fact Angel follows the Blaine show formula exactly. First three quarters of show is close up or small group type effects then one big final illusion or stunt he talks about here & there all through the show. Building the suspense of "real" danger till the end. Angels show IS exactly like Baline did it. Copperfiled did too

For me as far as the start of TV magic stars its Henning, Copperfield, Burton, Penn & Teller, Blaine, then Angel. Copperfield being the most supreme in this field by far. Angel just putting a punk/Goth/street magic spin to his show.

Actually, Copperfield has received numerous awards, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Living Legend Award from the Library of Congress and the Magician of the Year from the Academy of Magical Arts. But of course, Houdini is the inspiration for nearly every magician in the world, I would think. He is a legend in magic and escape artistry, whose name will live forever.

Houdini did only escapes, not magic, his magic was easy and 1 grade, I am a magician too, and my illusions are better than his illutions, Houdini was not a magician, he combined magic with escapism.
