This is my favorite thing to watch every Christmas since i was 4 years old when it first came on TV. Its not Christmas without watching my old videotape of it!
What a classic CHRISTMAS song! One of my all-time favorites!! I always get a lump in my throat listening to this. Thanks to YouTube's SpotNFlo for the very merry post. MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone!!!
I love this song I sing it as well when I do karaoke at the club. I think the little creatures are precious. Dolly someday I would love to sing with you!
People don't get it.. They get jade'd... It is the child like innoce that's why they an see them.. Like fairys, imaganry friends.... When we get older a lot of us loose that child-like niativity.
Aaaaw... This is from the days when Dollys wigs looked like crap, and Kenny Rogers still was handsome :D Loving their christmassongs, and will soon play it here :D But not untill dec. 1 :D
Love this song.......I grew up listening to this through many xmases........It's still popular to this day in Vanuatu[island country in the south pacific] during xmas.
My heart truely goes out to you! Although I am not going to ask you about your personal life, I am going to say, that if your husband or boyfriend is in the millitary or anything like that, I hope you returns save and healthy! Always happy to find a new friend on boards like this!
I love Christmas. When I was a child, I believed in Santa and the elves... It is such a beautiful memory of mine and completey innocent. I feel so sad for anyone who didn't get to experience Santa coming down the chimney and Snow falling deep enough to make an igloo in your backyard, but it was worth it all. I'm older now and all I regret is letting the world take away that inncoence of mine... but they'll never take my special Christmases away with my Mom and Brothers. Beautiful memory!
I LOVE this Christmas special and wish that it was still aired at Christmas time!!! It's one of the best Christmas shows EVER...along with the Dinsey one that also aired at Chrostmas time back in the 80s!

Great commentary! :-) At the end of the day the song really DOESN'T make sense, as "greatest" means above all other things, and the lyrics say that two things are the greatest (knowledge of another's love and peace on Earth)--impossible. Kenny recorded another song with faulty logic. In "Listen to the Rain," the lyrics are "How can we deny that it's anything but right..." If you break it down, that means how can we deny that it's wrong, which is the opposite of what he was going for!

It's nice when the lyrics make sense, but if they don't I just take it as it is rather than try to figure out a way to make it work. If I say something is the greatest, and then say something else is the greatest, I either don't know how to use the word "greatest" or I've changed my mind.

........And here' where we disagree, because I believe that, Kenny and Dolly, singing together,in the last verse are entitled to express their, not his or hers but their collective "Greatest Gift" as in the third person,if you like.
That doesn't make any sense to me at all and I seriously doubt that the composer had your interpretation in mind when this was written, but you're entitled to your opinion. Thanks for posting the clip, by the way!
i really love the song ...it makes me remember of my family and friends ...i miss the times .....i want to cry if i hear this song, especially christmas is coming..
Man i remember this as a kid mom played this at x-mas and when i hear this it gimmy that good old X-mas feeling again thx for posting this Greetings from NL.
I loved this video, and I think it is just another wonderfull song sung by two of country musics greatest. There is so much chemestry between these two, they make you feel as if what they are singing is real. great job. Big fan of both Kenny and Dolly.
nah not really, this kind of imagination is annoying, others are beautiful it does not fit the video sorry takes away the magic of two magical stars and the theme itself angels would've been nicer or fairies flying around something pretty.
Obviously you don't like Country Music. .....Perhaps you could comment on the unmusical mournfull wailing sounds that your home country calls music, and broadcasts everywhere.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Alright...
A. This was NOT Country Music.
B. Now what the FUCK does my home country music (I was born in the former USSR, but suppose you meant Israel by that) have to do with Dolly Paton's dreadful singing? Perhaps you should really consider relating your replies to the comments they're attributed to.
Then why comment at all, on musicians you obviously don't like !! ...You only show your ignorance and deliberately offend the majority of the Weastern people who love it,,just as my comment on your homeland wailing has offended you ....Get my drift !!!!!?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No, I don't get your drift, because you didn't insult me. I mostly hate Israeli music too, due to its being mainly oriental. However, I find it funny how I'm considered an ignorant, whereas your determination of Israli music as "unmusical mournfull wailing sounds" could not be established on more than 1% of it. Americans are often not very bright, they follow the herd rather than deciding themselves what's good or bad.
Well ,I'm a "kiwi" ,not a "Yank",and I love Dollys' songs, ,,,,,,,,,,,, I don't waste my time searching out Singers that I don't enjoy listening to,just to place bad feedback ......That's my point !! ,,,subject closed !!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I didn't watch this to slander Dolly, just a song with a nice title I wanted to listen to, and a lovely song it was, too bad I had to stop it after the first verse. And I didn't call YOU an American, what I meant was that if Americans had used their minds every once in a while, she wouldn't have become famous, therefore you would never know about her, and right now probably listen to some better music. See how everything works out?
I found a way to reconcile the problem with the title and lyrics: the singers change their minds regarding what they hold to be the greatest gift of all. First they believe that "knowing you're in love with me" is the greatest gift of all, but later decide that "peace on Earth, goodwill to men" is the greatest gift of all. Given that only one thing can be the greatest at a given time, I can't think of another way to make this work. What a relief-- I love this song and want it to make sense.
Gimmerabies ...with respect,,,,,,please read ,then comment on the statment I made 6 months ago ........"In the first verse, Kenny tells Dolly that his greatest gift from her is the knowledge that she loves him.
In the second verse, Dolly tells Kenny that her greatest gift from him is the knowledge that he loves her.
In the third verse, they both proclaim that "Peace on earth and goodwill to Men" is their greatest gift of all."
I don't follow your logic. Kenny and Dolly are still individuals with one mind each; they don't create a third opinion simply by virtue of singing together. While you're not quoting from the song itself you are proposing an interpretation--"they're greatest gift of all"-- that doesn't exist in the words as they are. Practically anything can be explained by introducing new variables, but I don't think that would be keeping true to the song as it is.
And here is where we differ....I believe that in the third verse, where they both sing together ,having proclaimed their love for each other as greatest individual gift in the first two verses, they are entitled to hope for, or proclaim a greatest gift for mankind. ...btw..."the're' denotes they are,not their. he he
I stand corrected on the typo but not on the analysis. That having been said, I appreciate how you rearticulated your point as it makes a lot more sense to me this time around. I still think your theory is a bit of a stretch, but it's colorable nonetheless. Again, it only holds if the song is strictly a duet. Tree Company did not write the song as it is a publishing company that may have added the M/F duet designation AFTER Kenny and Dolly made it a hit. I'd need more info to know for sure.
Thank You !! Although we both beg to differ,we do agree that the song should be sung by more than one person. ......Woe betide the soloist who dares to attempt this song, I say !! .... He should be shot at dawn on an empty stomach,or,at best, thrashed to within an inch of his life with a prickle bush !!
Further, your interpretation might only make sense if the song was intended to be sung exclusively as a duet. Given that there are no gender designations in the lyrics or other indications that the song was to be sung by a couple but never by a soloist, it's that much harder for me to consider your theory.
Another point regarding the duet issue: just because a song is sung as a duet doesn't mean it was intended to be sung that way originally or exclusively. Consider "We've got Tonight" by Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton; it was originally written and performed by Bob Seger, a single vocalist.
The song "The Greatest Gift O All" was written by Tree Publishing as a Christmas Ballad for a Male/Female duet.....Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton were the original artists who made it a hit in 1984.
While your spelling makes it hard to understand what you are saying in one reading (and would otherwise create a field day for gimmerabies if he hadn't have gone off crying when I pointed out no one was praising him) I see you agree the dialog by gimmerabies was pointless and the song should simply be enjoyed!
Where do you get that gimmerabies was upset for lack of praise? I didn't read it that way at all. You were simply being confrontational, and who would want to bother with that?
MEMORIES..my girlfriend and I did this song at so many christmas concerts..we were teens at that time..we are now married both in our 30s...kind of a difficult time right now..am almost to tears coz this song brings back so many memories of such great times....Knowing you're in love with me is the greatest gift of all!!!
oh I meant gay as in "lame". I referring to those other costumed characters interrupting the music...guess it's a Torontonian (Canadian)term in that context...
Then Dalm, i think YOU are gay...because this kind of using gay to mean something else is SO LAME...and u should be ashamed of using that stupid expression...ur generation makes me sick.
You used 'gay' in a very ignorant way that is often intended to be hurtful or a put down.
You were commenting on the use of characters in the video. If you watch the whole tv special you they are throughout the show and becomes less strange to see. But I agree with you - they are strange and are distract from the romantic or sentimental feelings created by Kenny & Dolly and the lyrics of the songs.
nothing gay about the song.. but if you mean Gay" as in happy happy.. yes it makes me happy, i love xmas and nothing wrong with being gay... nothing wrong with loving someone and being loved back, no mater who it is... nothing greater the gift of love
I like all of Kenny Rogers' Christmas music. He is a great great singer. This, "Silent Night", "The Christmas Song", "Til' The Season Comes Round Again", "Christmas Everyday" are amoung the best versions of Christmas songs ever.
I'm laughing at all the time and space that was wasted by all the English teacher/grammar comments......Geez! It's a gorgeous song...please don't diminish the beauty that is Dolly.
Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton do an excellent job with these Christmas songs; "Once Upon A Christmas" is an album that has been enjoyed by many people for 24 years and counting.

I loved this video, and I think it is just another wonderfull song sung by two of country musics greatest. There is so much chemestry between these two, they make you feel as if what they are singing is real. great job. Big fan of both Kenny and Dolly.

Imagination is a wonderful thing ..... seems you missed out on your share !!
SpotNFlo 2 years ago
nah not really, this kind of imagination is annoying, others are beautiful it does not fit the video sorry takes away the magic of two magical stars and the theme itself angels would've been nicer or fairies flying around something pretty.
Cherstars 2 years ago
Sorry, but she's an awful singer.

Infidel !!!! ...I throw my shoe at you.
SpotNFlo 2 years ago
What? She may be famous, but her singing is weak and inaccurate.
deadlybug 2 years ago
Obviously you don't like Country Music. .....Perhaps you could comment on the unmusical mournfull wailing sounds that your home country calls music, and broadcasts everywhere.

Alright...
A. This was NOT Country Music.
B. Now what the FUCK does my home country music (I was born in the former USSR, but suppose you meant Israel by that) have to do with Dolly Paton's dreadful singing? Perhaps you should really consider relating your replies to the comments they're attributed to.
deadlybug 2 years ago
Then why comment at all, on musicians you obviously don't like !! ...You only show your ignorance and deliberately offend the majority of the Weastern people who love it,,just as my comment on your homeland wailing has offended you ....Get my drift !!!!!?
SpotNFlo 2 years ago

No, I don't get your drift, because you didn't insult me. I mostly hate Israeli music too, due to its being mainly oriental. However, I find it funny how I'm considered an ignorant, whereas your determination of Israli music as "unmusical mournfull wailing sounds" could not be established on more than 1% of it. Americans are often not very bright, they follow the herd rather than deciding themselves what's good or bad.
deadlybug 2 years ago
Well ,I'm a "kiwi" ,not a "Yank",and I love Dollys' songs, ,,,,,,,,,,,, I don't waste my time searching out Singers that I don't enjoy listening to,just to place bad feedback ......That's my point !! ,,,subject closed !!!

See how everything works out?
deadlybug 2 years ago
I found a way to reconcile the problem with the title and lyrics: the singers change their minds regarding what they hold to be the greatest gift of all. First they believe that "knowing you're in love with me" is the greatest gift of all, but later decide that "peace on Earth, goodwill to men" is the greatest gift of all. Given that only one thing can be the greatest at a given time, I can't think of another way to make this work. What a relief-- I love this song and want it to make sense.
gimmerabies 2 years ago
Gimmerabies ...with respect,,,,,,please read ,then comment on the statment I made 6 months ago ........"In the first verse, Kenny tells Dolly that his greatest gift from her is the knowledge that she loves him.
In the second verse, Dolly tells Kenny that her greatest gift from him is the knowledge that he loves her.
In the third verse, they both proclaim that "Peace on earth and goodwill to Men" is their greatest gift of all."
SpotNFlo 2 years ago
Hey SpotNFlo,
I don't follow your logic. Kenny and Dolly are still individuals with one mind each; they don't create a third opinion simply by virtue of singing together. While you're not quoting from the song itself you are proposing an interpretation--"they're greatest gift of all"-- that doesn't exist in the words as they are. Practically anything can be explained by introducing new variables, but I don't think that would be keeping true to the song as it is.
gimmerabies 2 years ago
And here is where we differ....I believe that in the third verse, where they both sing together ,having proclaimed their love for each other as greatest individual gift in the first two verses, they are entitled to hope for, or proclaim a greatest gift for mankind. ...btw..."the're' denotes they are,not their. he he
SpotNFlo 2 years ago
I stand corrected on the typo but not on the analysis. That having been said, I appreciate how you rearticulated your point as it makes a lot more sense to me this time around. I still think your theory is a bit of a stretch, but it's colorable nonetheless. Again, it only holds if the song is strictly a duet. Tree Company did not write the song as it is a publishing company that may have added the M/F duet designation AFTER Kenny and Dolly made it a hit. I'd need more info to know for sure.
Music24450 2 years ago
Thank You !! Although we both beg to differ,we do agree that the song should be sung by more than one person. ......Woe betide the soloist who dares to attempt this song, I say !! .... He should be shot at dawn on an empty stomach,or,at best, thrashed to within an inch of his life with a prickle bush !!
SpotNFlo 2 years ago
Further, your interpretation might only make sense if the song was intended to be sung exclusively as a duet. Given that there are no gender designations in the lyrics or other indications that the song was to be sung by a couple but never by a soloist, it's that much harder for me to consider your theory.
gimmerabies 2 years ago
Had this song been sung by a soloist ,I would have agreed entirely with you.....I've only ever heard it sung by Kenny and Dolly.
SpotNFlo 2 years ago
Another point regarding the duet issue: just because a song is sung as a duet doesn't mean it was intended to be sung that way originally or exclusively. Consider "We've got Tonight" by Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton; it was originally written and performed by Bob Seger, a single vocalist.
gimmerabies 2 years ago
The song "The Greatest Gift O All" was written by Tree Publishing as a Christmas Ballad for a Male/Female duet.....Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton were the original artists who made it a hit in 1984.

While your spelling makes it hard to understand what you are saying in one reading (and would otherwise create a field day for gimmerabies if he hadn't have gone off crying when I pointed out no one was praising him) I see you agree the dialog by gimmerabies was pointless and the song should simply be enjoyed!
vincef100 3 years ago
Where do you get that gimmerabies was upset for lack of praise? I didn't read it that way at all. You were simply being confrontational, and who would want to bother with that?

i love this song soooo much but what a gay video LOL
Dalm8ion 3 years ago
What's "gay" about it??... He's a boy and She's a girl.Seems pretty straight to me !!
SpotNFlo 3 years ago
oh I meant gay as in "lame". I referring to those other costumed characters interrupting the music...guess it's a Torontonian (Canadian)term in that context...
Dalm8ion 3 years ago
Then Dalm, i think YOU are gay...because this kind of using gay to mean something else is SO LAME...and u should be ashamed of using that stupid expression...ur generation makes me sick.
cubanbach 3 years ago
bless your heart...you obviously don't get it
Dalm8ion 3 years ago
What is there 'to get'?
You used 'gay' in a very ignorant way that is often intended to be hurtful or a put down.
You were commenting on the use of characters in the video. If you watch the whole tv special you they are throughout the show and becomes less strange to see. But I agree with you - they are strange and are distract from the romantic or sentimental feelings created by Kenny & Dolly and the lyrics of the songs.
aManOnaJourney 3 years ago
It's a well-known and commonly used expression to say that something is lame or pathetic.
daijobz 2 years ago
nothing gay about the song.. but if you mean Gay" as in happy happy.. yes it makes me happy, i love xmas and nothing wrong with being gay... nothing wrong with loving someone and being loved back, no mater who it is... nothing greater the gift of love

Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton do an excellent job with these Christmas songs; "Once Upon A Christmas" is an album that has been enjoyed by many people for 24 years and counting.
