I dunno, it's good but it's not got the power of the original. Phil seems to be singing it rather than investing in it & connecting the way Peter did.
This was the best short version of The Knife hands down. Phil Collins did Peter's parts well. Chester Thompson brought the drums to life and rivaled Phil's performance on Genesis Live. Daryl Stuermer did well with the guitar solo. Tony and Mike of course just kick ass!
I bet if this song was covered by a mainstream rock group in 2004 or 2005 it would have been a big hit on rock radio. The lyrics are very fitting for that period.
Never before heard this song with Phil. Always have loved this song with PG but Phil does great at making this song his own. His personality is definitely here. Fantastic job by Daryl as well. Excellent.
Please give it to me. I recorded this concert on cassette years ago and played it to death - literally. I really want to get this concert on CD. It is simply awesome.

If you are not ready "to stand up and fight for your rights"...you are probably bound to grab that knife sooner or later.
You should not.

Why did they play a shorter version of the song instead of the full 9-minute version after Peter Gabriel's departure?
SPeacock 2 years ago
@SPeacock Cuz, there's a big flute solo. But only Peter knew how to play the flute so the shortened it.

Oh, I see. That makes sense :)

I saw this tour 7 times in '81 and they only did The Knife once; at The Hammersmith Odeon (I think :)) late in the tour.
Great song, great version. I remember loads of us got to the front and were jumping up and down to the beat. It was like being at a football match. :)

They did it with Phil occasionally on the Wind & Wuthering tour and even once on the Abacab tour.

I was hoping that they would do this on the last tour but I suppose Phil can't reach the high notes like that anymore..shame.
