How does it actually work? Is the one who learned the violin first able to learn the cello and not cause or fall into any bad habits when switching between instruments? I'd love to start learning cello but I'm also afraid to affect my violin technique that I worked so hard on.
finally a no nonsense approach for someone with violin experience trying to also learn the cello. People say I'm crazy for wanting lo learn the violin, viola, cello and double bass, but I just LOVE to learn all kinds of instruments, since there's no desire to become some world master anyway on any single one, just have endless amounts of fun : )
my muscles start to hurt while i play -- something i wasn't expecting because I'm a weight lifter. In fact, that was the one thing i wasn't expecting. I rested for a day and not only did my skill seem to jump dramatically, but the the fatigue went away some. Now it's back. I find cello the most physically difficult when reading music. Pretty hard.
Thank you very much,I've been playing violin for 12 years now and have just started Cello a couple weeks ago,and this has explained a lot for me!Such a lovely sound the cello has!
yeaaahhhhh... just what i needed... i have less than a month studying violin and this wendsday i got my first cello lesson, i just adore both instruments.. so i don't wanna quit any of them.. But i realize that i need to be very clever so i don't mix techniques.. the good thing is that both my teachers are friends and are aware i'm learning both at the same time... as far i can differenciate aeasily the 2 different bow grips.. i'll look forward for more videos for violinists and cello players
I've been doing Cello for.. a few days now and Viola for years. You'll actually find it's really hard to mix up the techniques. It's kinda like reading in a different clef, your brain just does it for you.
Yep actually i have noticed that, i'm still not very fluent reading in any clef, So sometimes is hard to rapidly tell is a "F" or "A" for example.. But for the technique i don't think i'm mixing nothing. Just Violin still is easier for me, i have an easier to play violin and a hard to play cello, so i'm commiting more on the cello. How you do with your celloing? How long have you been playing viola? it sounds great also, is a shame it has no much difusion as solo instrument (that i know)
I've been doing Viola for around 7 years and Cello for a few days. :D Cello is actually going great. My technique is probably pretty shabby, but it should be close enough. I can sort of kind of play the first half of Bach Cello Suite 1.
I actually have a huge amount of difficulty naming the notes on the staff. I'm pretty fluent in bass, alto, and treble clefs for all my instruments. I really wanted to do Cello because of the lack of solo work for Viola. How old are you?
I'm very old LOL i'll be 33 this year But i've been dancing ballet professionally for 22 years so the discipline dancers have has helped me a lot 2practice for at least 2 hours daily in each intrument. What i like of learning 2play violin and cello is the wide range of pieces you can eventually play. Some are better played on the cello and some on the violin. I guess if i keep doing this (wich i'm sure i'll keep) in maybe 10 years i can try viola with less difficulty as is kind of in between.
If you can play the violin well, you can switch to Viola really easily. I switched to viola permanently with little trouble, after getting used to the cleft.
Oh really? I'm not fluent on the violin yet (nor the cello either) But i guess in a few years i'll give it a try. Besides Celloing uses the C clef as well so maybe i won't struggle that much with the clef then. I have found the more i practice on the cello the easier i can play violin. I'm trying Polovetsian dances on cello, and after practice, i only take the violin and comes out efforless..
I just got a cello yesterday! I'm so excited... but I have no money left for lessons lol hence I turn to youtube... lol haha I can play elenor rigby XD my knowlege of cello is limited to getting stabbed by endpins in orchestra, so this is a helpful video for me...getting rid of my bad violinist habits while I save up for lessons :)
I've been playing the violin for 13 years, and the cello for 2. Initially, when sitting down with it for the first time, I thought, "Hey, it's like...a big violin, no sweat." But now, because I did not correct my position in the beginning, I'm having trouble with vibrado, and in the beginning, I had trouble with shifting into higher positions (5 +).. Many people don't realize how important these small changes are!
I haven't get to learn vibrato or shifting in any instrument yet. But keep my eyes open to the differences and difficulties i might find. How you find your increased musical capability by playing both instruments? I think (w/o fundament as i have very little playing) that altough you can face difficulties playing both, you also have similarities that makes some issues easier to achieve in your second instrument.. i have find sometimes celloing helps my violin and viceversa.
Do you ask your pupils to play an easy one octave scale without any thumb contact on the neck? Useful as it forces the fingers to work properly by using arm weight as you would playing piano as opposed to gripping with the thumb from beneath. It is physically impossible to grip without a thumb! This is not to be done always obviously, as the thumb does play a part in things. Having said that, it is surprising how little though the thumb actually does. The thumb is responsible for many problems

Hi Sibelius27, Yes, I like that exercise. I totally agree with you about the thumb. If the thumb is tight is tightens the whole hand.

I've been playing violin for about 4/5 years but I've always wanted to play cello as well. Cool video

Good video. Glad to see that on the side info at the top, the website name is up. You should direct students in string tech towards this next year.

Thanks. I hope to have a lot more info up for next semester string tech. Have a great summer.
