It took me 8 years to appreciate France...the language still gets on my nerves many many times but it is fascinating and it has its own allure and beauty. Still think Paris is way overrated (it's a beautiful city but come on not THAT beautiful) but France is a wonderful country. Still think that Italian food is 100 times better than French cuisine (which is very good nonetheless). But I love French classical music (Saint-Saens and Satie in particular), French cinema and French literature
thank you for this fine compilation. Great composers all, Berlioz and Saint-Saens are among my favorites; Saint-Saens is so deserving of more exposure-here on Youtube you will find excellent postings of some of his best works- including the great chamber pieces. I hope that those listeners who are new to Classical music will pursue the works of these masters- you won't regret it! Thanks again!
I believe your wrong on every account. Every music has a place in this world and your ignorance only gives what your trying to represent a bad name. GOOD DAY SIR !
islamic music better?? BWAHAHAHA When my bro sings in the shower it's waaaay better than any Islamic music. Anyway take your religion somewhere else. This is not even a palce to discuss religion.
@plovakia actually, religious music -including islamic- sets the origins of modern music. From gregorian chants, to czardas you can find incredible melodic intricacies.
@plovakia the music of the middle east is phenominal in that it uses a quarter-tone scale. European composers never really ventured into quarter scales, but some modern composer (particularly for flute) have
i love that rameau piece!! berlioz symphonie fantastique, amazing!!! my favourite piece by berlioz! the thomas is so beautiful. very good performance! who was the pianist in the alkan? it was a fantastic performance! i love the gounod, so powerful! saint saens is my favourite french composer though, his pieces are just so amazing!
There are a few other composers whom you could explore in another part of your series:
Around the same era as Rameau are Nicolas and Louis Couperin who, along with Rameau, were instrumental (excuse the pun) in developing a new voice for French keyboard music. Also, how about Alexandre Guilmant (Organ Symphonies), Alexandre Boely, Gabriel Fauré and any number of French composer-organists from Widor to Messiaen etc. The list is quite extensive in fact!
Also, the phrase 'Best French Composers' is quite subjective, so opinion may be divided on who should be included in the list...
P.S. I forgot to mention Louis Vierne, Jehan Alain and Charles Tournemire - three very unique voices in the history of French music between Widor and Messiaen...
Delibes is a charming composer. Lakmé is a sweet opera with many good moments. Coppelia and Sylvia are his two popular ballets. Gounod is quite aademic but Faust and Roméo are very spectaular.
Alkan is the Frenh Liszt, a very picturesque figure. The best French piano composer? Let's not forget Debussy and Ravel, far more refined. Berlioz is an extravagant genius and Ambroise Thomas a bore.
Are there any good modern day French composers?

Berlioz composed the Rakóczi March for his Damnation of Faust, so if we are listening to French composers' works, then it must be included.
kdrtt 2 years ago
Yeah! why are you claiming Liszt Ferenc´s Rakoczy March to be a french composition? It´s so hungarian as it can be! Has nothing to do with france!
crossbow80 2 years ago
rakoczy march is hungarian folk tune...
So not original composition, not French at all

Really great! I love it!
2 of these composers I have never heard of, Gounod or Delibes, noneoftheless, I have heard their music and I like it!
I thankyou for uploading this video masterpiece of yours.
I think I wont make a "Great Composers: The French" part now, because your video is so good, I dont think I can even match it.
I love Alkans music. Possibly my favourite french piano composer.
The Organ symphony, such a great piece by the genius himself! And I love his second piano concerto!
