When I was about twelve, I read a Nintendo magazine review of the videogame 'Mortal Kombat 2' in which one of the special moves was to spit acid. There was a picture of that and the caption, 'Gob on you, 'cos I hate your guts. Gob on you, kick you in the...' and my twelve-year-old mind thought that was hilarious and I never forgot it. My brother and I made a catchphrase of it.
I even watch NTNOCN. But I had no idea where 'Gob on you' came from.
Absolutely amazing such a shame it's not all there. The violin bit cracks me up every time- many thanks. This sort of humour just doesn't exist anymore
Wonderful to see all the NTNOCN anoraks on here...The final verse that was only shown once and then edited out cos some fuckin' Mary Whitehouse type thought that any song at all mentioning 'sex' was evil and immoral......
@thickobtuse Hahah, yeah, that's right, that was a lyric too. I wish we could see it all. I also would look for the Canadian comics The Frantics doing "A Punk Square Dance": "Stand right there, stare at the walls, go to the can and rip out the stalls / Shave your head and paint it green. Allemande until you scream!"
Priceless. Also it's a satire on Top of the Pops, the camera angles and lenses of the way music was broadcast in the 70s. But could you not upload the whole thing - there are two verses missing. Thanks.
Its worth bearing in mind that the BBC would get something like 5 times the mail if Kenny Everett came on TV and said "Bum!" at this time. You could be struck from broadcasting.
Was it autumn 1979 this was broadcast - Christ on a bike, I had to stop my 11 year old self from screaming with laughter so I could hear the next line! :o) It was unimaginable that this was going out. Life was never the same.
@3Deity About a year later, TVOntario showed this in Canada. I laughed my head off too. It was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen at the time. :)
Superb. But yes there's a lot missing. It was released by BBC records as a single (with the Ayatollah song) and I found it on vinyl in a charity shop a few years ago. The whole thing is about 2 minutes ten seconds. The thing is I'm fairly sure there were two versions of the longer song... the single rhymed "in your Oxbridge Punt" with "you're the National Front" but when I saw it on TV as a kid I'm sure the line was "you're a stupid c..." (they stopped at the 'C' in the song naturally)...
See what you mean! It's Chris Langham who was in the orig Not The Nine O'Clock News team, replaced by Griff Rhys Jones from the 2nd series onwards... Have just found a recording of Iggy reading "The Tell Tale Heart" - bizarre! =:0)
@DevonNumptiesOnTour I'm not 100% sure, but I seem to remember the chorus may have been repeated again after the violins, but possibly only the 7" single release, (it was the b-side to the Ayatollah song) this may well be the cut off point for the TV version tho - google "gob on you" ayatollah 7" vinyl - I've got a copy here somewhere, gonna have to dig it out...
Hi, I remember another verse: "Sex is boring, pain is fun; I wanna cut my fingers off one by one; There ain't no point in staying alive; I wanna be dead, but I'm 25; Gob on You, cos you're well-insured; Gob on You, cos I'm young, and bored ..." sorry, can't remember the rest ...
@CaptainHurricane I think that was an enforced tamer broadcast version , because the line that comes before is " Gob on you , in your Oxbridge Punts ! " so I think you can guess where the draft lyric was heading for , before someone said " You cant do that on the Beeb ! ".
@chezz1ebabe Sex is boring, Pain is fun; I wanna cut my fingers off one by one; There ain't no point in staying alive; I wanna be dead, but I'm 25; Gob on You, 'cause your hairs too long; Gob on You, 'cause you're never wrong; Gob on You, in your Oxbridge punts; Gob on You, you're the national front !
Gob on You, 'cause you're well insured; Gob on You, 'cause I'm young, and bored; Gob on You, 'cause you talk about art; Gob on You, 'cause your a boring old fart !
If that had ever been released officially into the charts I'd have just laughed.

When I was a youthful punk we used to use 'Mel Smith' as a slang term for an unconvincing fake punk, inspired, obviously, by this sketch.
There was a bloke, an estate agent, who dressed up as a punk on the weekends and was known by all and sundry as 'Mel' for that very reason.
Great stuff.

I am pretty sure there was also a verse something like this:
Sex is boring pain is fun,
I want to cut my fingers off one by one,
there ain't no point in staying alive,
I want to be dead before I'm 25.

You're right; I remember that verse from this song on one of their albums. I think it was a "best of." I had it on cassette. (Christ I feel old...)
