Furthermore, we should focus on the positives and find the common grounds that we can all agree upon and take it from there? It will not guarantee a solution but at least it’s in the right direction. I was born in HK but grew up most of my life in the US and I can't agree more with these white expats. I dread going back to HK now a days because people there are so f~~king loud, arrogant, and rude. HK people have real bad attitudes, esp older HK men. People in Japan are all polite, courteous, and friendly. They don't talk on the cell phones in trains because it's consider rude and impolite. They don't litter, they don't spit, they don't blow their nose in public, . In Africa, people say excuse me and thank you and they open doors for you. These are courtesy that don't exist with Chinese people.
First thing I noticed and liked about this city (HK) was the hospitality and friendly attitude of the local HKongers! HKongers treat westerners very well indeed and they are such positive people!! Most westerners don't (bother) or can't even say one word of Cantonese, so it's these types who generally hate the experience, so fuck em...I love the people and enjoy the vast differences it offers compared to my home country.
As a westerner livng in HK, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and have made many friends from all cultures and backgrounds, (except Americans - funny that!) Agreed that we shouldn't be whinging about places that we reside in; we should embrace what we can and make the most of it. I have assimilated well with local HKers, we all go on hikes, dragon boat racing and even travelling to other countries. Those who complain about HK or other cities simply need to get a grip and ACCEPT!!

However, I'm not living here because I only want to be with other westerners. The rudest people I have ever met were Americans, in New York. Its Americans which don't mix with local people in Hong Kong, and they don't mix in Dubai, Singapore, Australia, Egypt and anywhere i have worked. British, Australian's, New Zealanders, etc, do mix and have Hong Kong Chinese friends and don't live in seperate communities, like Tai Tam.

I can only speak to the two incidents mentioned at Starbucks and people talking loudly on the tram. I think this is just an issue of rudeness. In New York you get the same discourteous behavior on a daily basis, so I would say it is not specific to HK Asian society.

Furthermore, we should focus on the positives and find the common grounds that we can all agree upon and take it from there? It will not guarantee a solution but at least it’s in the right direction. I believe it is important for us to develop the skills and abilities to be self-critical and fair which hopefully will help us look for common grounds and resolutions.
It is easier to judge and be critical of others. But while we are judging those ladies or counter-criticizing the people who judge them, are we not being somewhat intolerant and arrogant ourselves and whining about others? I was born in HK but grew up most of my life in the US and I can't agree more with these white expats. I dread going back to HK now a days because people there are so f~~king loud, arrogant, and rude. HK people have real bad attitudes, esp older HK men. I can never get any peace and quiet during my stay in HK because there's always some hideous, nasty Chinese guy screaming on his cell phone in their ugly voices. And I find majority of HK people are ugly looking as hell.

My siblings and overseas cousins and Chinese friends all feels the exact same way about the local HK people. I go back to HK because I have to visit my parent. People in Japan are all polite, courteous, and friendly. They don't talk on the cell phones in trains because it's consider rude and impolite. They don't litter, they don't spit, they don't blow their nose in public, . In Africa, people say excuse me and thank you and they open doors for you. These are courtesy that don't exist with Chinese people.

First thing I noticed and liked about this city (HK) was the hospitality and friendly attitude of the local HKongers! HKongers treat westerners very well indeed and they are such positive people!! Most westerners don't (bother) or can't even say one word of Cantonese, so it's these types who generally hate the experience, so fuck em...I love the people and enjoy the vast differences it offers compared to my home country.

As a westerner livng in HK, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and have made many friends from all cultures and backgrounds, (except Americans - funny that!) Agreed that we shouldn't be whinging about places that we reside in; we should embrace what we can and make the most of it. I have assimilated well with local HKers, we all go on hikes, dragon boat racing and even travelling to other countries. Those who complain about HK or other cities simply need to get a grip and ACCEPT!!

I live in Stanley, and I would have to say the majority of residents here are 'gweilos' (if you exclude the public housing estate), including myself. However, I'm not living here because I only want to be with other westerners. I really don't care much for people who spend their whole time in a foreign country whingeing about the locals, not making the slightest effort to learn the lingo and only wanting to stick to their own kind. People from different cultures r welcomed in HK. The blend of differences & the coexistence of cultures make the world a more interesting & exciting place.
But when people r so arrogant that they don't feel the need to learn the local language & customs, they have NO place there!

America who never assimilate, only stick with their own kinds, don't inter grade with the locals, only do Asian things and speaks Chinese loudly in public with no intention of learning English and local customs and they wonder why white people don't like them.

The rudest people I have ever met were Americans, in New York. Its Americans which don't mix with local people in Hong Kong, and they don't mix in Dubai, Singapore, Australia, Egypt and anywhere i have worked. British, Australian's, New Zealanders, etc, do mix and have Hong Kong Chinese friends and don't live in seperate communities, like Tai Tam.

That south african woman wasn't the only complainer about the rudeness of HK chinesemen, I can tell you there are quite many out there sharing the same view. Well, you may be right to make judgement in that particular situation of the SA woman, but being living in HK longer than most of expat here, in general, many (not all) hongkong men are just quite the way these women were describing.
