When anglos started settling Texas they where amazed by the character of the Vaquero and picked up the culture. Vaquero literaly translates to Cowboy, however some called themselfs Buckaroos. If u go all through Mexico ull feel the Cowboy presence throughout the culture. While in the USA the farther east u go the more u emerse ur self in a European farming or urban setting. Though Cowboy culture has been embeded well in the south. Nothing compares with the south western states though.
Also came the Chaparreras (chaps), espueras (spurs), riata (lariat), and the western saddle. The spaniards used totaly a diferent technique then that developed in Mexico by the Natives. They used poles with nooses at the end. The lazzos where made of variouse fibers like cotton, mague cactus, leather, etc. The lasso provided better efficientsy then that long pole with a noose used throughout Europe.
When the spaniards arrived in Mexico ( Centuries before Jamestown), they brought there cattle and horses many escaped. The Spaniards were to lazy to herd the cattle, so the had there inslaved native americans herd them for them. At first they did everything on foot. when the got the trust of the Jefe, he gave them guns and horses to better do there duties. The natives came up with the clothing, including the Sombreros (hats), and thats why all western clothing have native tribal stitching.
@j0ram8711 Thats not true the first Vaqueros were Peninsulares(spanish born) and criollos(mexican born spaniards) and the clothing was just the Criollos twist on Spanish clothing, and i know what im talking about my Great gradfather was a criollo rancher, my grandfather was raised on the rancho, and so was my dad......
and indios werent vaqueros it was usually mestizo, castizos, criollos, and whatever else
The Originals were Spanish and European descent. Not Mexican!! Spaniards settled California for the most part. Most of California and Baja was Spanish owned ranches as big as a county is today. Read your history before you let Machismo and ego get in the way. Some of the most horrific things I've ever seen done to a horse was done by a Mexican. Mexican's should go home if it's such a proud place.
The Mexican Indians were the first Vaqueros to be correct. It's a shame that most think that the white Anglo were the first Cowboys. It was the Mexican Vaquuero who taught the white folk.
People watch too many movies and not read enough facts.

As regards the Vaqueros it wasn't an either/or but a both/and. All of you are right.

@Memphis691000 Read your history? Well apparently you haven't read yours. You want reliable sources? Here are some.
In the Days of the Vaqueros by Russell Freedman
These Were The Vaqueros: Collected Works of Arnold R. Rojas
Vaqueros: America's First Cowmen by Martin W. Sandler
Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy by Bill Wittliff
El Vaquero Real: The Original American Cowboy by John Dyer
And there are plenty more who say the same thing. THE MEXICAN INDIANS!
IDIOT!

I agree 100%... also if you look at all the old west movies, most of the riding techniques are vaquero.
The Vaquero also taught the Hawaiian Cowboys (Paniolo) how to cowboy too
