My keyboard is almost as good as yours, I have the G510, the only negative is the monochrome screen which is the same programmable color as the backlit keys, I do have 6 more macro keys than you, but honestly that's the only tentative one-up I have on you.
No need for me to upgrade. Just running the old compaq 1.7ghz amd processor, but she is running windows 7 ulimate with only 32 megs of video ram. 768megs of ram and the old faithful 80 gig hard drive. Why upgrade a pc when it running a great 2002 year made wd 80gig hard drive? Works like a charm for me.
That's seriously badass. The fastest PC I've ever had was a 3.0 GHZ Dell Dimension 3000 with a 250GB HDD. Intel graphics, and yet it plays Halo CE like a boss.
@mas90009 Huh??? I said only yesterday that the AMD Phenom II X6 is not faster than the 980X. Even overclocked to the max, the X6 isn't even close. Even AMD's newest FX-8150 is far behind.
At the time, the 980X was EASILY the fastest processor in the world (the second fastest was the 975 which wasn't even 70% as fast). That, and the fact that Jon really needed that extra performance, is the reason he spent $1000 on the 980X.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The AMD Phenom X6 will give similar performance for uh, about $800 less than the 980X? And the 580 is a ripoff compared to the 2GB 6970's that are on the market.
@EchoedTruth - Are you comparing price-points from today, or what they were 18 months ago? And just because you disagree on *two* parts of an entire machine doesn't make it a "lame build", but nice try dude.
@EchoedTruth Are you actually joking? the Phenom X6 gives less performance than an i5 2500k, let alone the legendary 980x, stop talking out of your ass, do some research
@123321theunknown Legendary? Wow... we got a fanboi here. And yea, at the end of the day... the benches aren't that far apart. Spend $1k on a cpu, or get near-similar performance for $150? Hmm...
@EchoedTruth I'm sorry, its not even nearly the same performance, and i'm not a fanboy, but i can accept that intel makes higher quality CPU's, the 980x is one of the greatest CPU's out oday
@EchoedTruth Are you just an AMD fanboy or something? 580 will kick the 6970 into the middle of next week granted the 6970 might be better when dealing with something like 2560 x 1600 resolution or triple screen HD gaming due to the extra vram, but the 580 is still a killer card & generally better than the 6970 in all tests. also the Phenom X6 although good doesn't even compare with the 980x, hence why they come in at $200 or whatever it is in the States as they closer in performance to a i7 950
@EchoedTruth AMD fanboy?.... btw two 6970s would be over 600 dollars, run hotter, and would use more power compared to a 580 which is around 450 dollars and runs much more efficiently than those AMD cards in Xfire....
@Jon OK apart from simmilar GPU and CPU, (phenom II x6) and the monitor (single 27'' LG LED) and with better MBO my 2 grand build is very simmilar to your specs, + I do have 10 gigs of RAM but at 1600 MHz). So, yeah, I to dislike this build, especially considering you're not a gamer (or IDK maybe you are). If that's true why build g19 and gamer mouse ? :S oh and I also have SSD for DOS and chipset and other drivers.
@Blistio11 - Well, I am a gamer... and two -- what's wrong with owning the gaming mouse/keyboard? I want/need/use all of those extra buttons. Keep in mind, this build is over 18 months old now, so prices have dropped -- and I need the performance for editing.
Sounds to me like you're trying to brag, and/or justified your bloated purchase when all you do is game?

The main computer that my family uses has been having some problems lately. We got it back from the repair shop a couple of weeks ago, but whenever I try to restart it, sometimes the Welcome screen never shows up, and I can't access Task Manager or anything.
I have a mid-2011 iMac, 21.5" screen running on OS X 10.7 Lion. It has a quad-core Intel Core i7 at 2.8 GHz, 8GB of memory, an ATI Radeon HD 6770M 512MB graphics card. Finally, I use a set of Logitech Z4 speakers and a Blue Snowball microphone.

@DemonWithAHumanHeart If you are planning on getting Photoshop, then I'd recommend none other than Premiere Pro/Elements. Otherwise, Sony Vegas Pro/Platinum is just as good.

I was looking at a computer with these components in it and was wondering what i could run with them, i dont know much about computers so if anyone could respond to me i would greatly appreciate it. OH, and im a pc gamer so what kind of games could i run?
for that money, i would've got myself a HP Elitebook 8560W or 8760W, use the rest of the money into share's and try to double it :). but really, though, that fucking insane specs
@LOLfilms100 50 TB HDD? hmm, shoud rearly have a SSD in there, after reading a lot of reviews the best GPU for gameing isnt the 6990, its the ati 6950, it runs better gives a better average FPS and dont "micro pause" like the 6990 is reported to have + if your just playing games why do you need a i7 Extream edition ?? thats more of a workstation processor, a i7 sandy bridge is proberbly about the same speed for gameing that a i7 extream edition, bit OTT if you ask me, more money than sense.
@LOLfilms100 My pc is also custom build, but its more of a video eding pc than gameing, it runs a 6 core AMD FX, 16GB DDR3 ram, GTX 470, 2x 1.5TB HDD on raid 1, 1x 120GB SSD running windows 7 64bitt
Nope I disagree yours was put together poorly. i.e. thermal paste is only ment to fill small imperfection in the face of the heat sink, because the best way to transfer heat is metal on metal, so if you had small imperfections like dips and such these would reduced the area of the heat sink toching the CPU thus reducing heat transfer between CPU and heats sink
@karlking1995 - You must be illiterate, because I clearly mentioned in the video that the thermal paste I applied was exactly the amount directed in the manual that came with the CPU.
@karlking1995 Yes, absolutely you need the paste to help transfer the heat.
The metal on the cooling fan and the metal on the CPU "sounds" like it should transfer heat just fine (I mean what better heat conductor than metal is there), but there is a reason every computer manufacturer in the world uses it. Why take a chance over a 1-5 dollar tube of cream.
@Hayeshacker0NE Yes exactly But the whole purpose of thermal pastes is to fill in all the imperfections to give a better contact thus better heat transfer, at least we actuly got some inteligence on you tube not a load of stuck up arse holes.
@emerybryant By any chance did you read my other comments properly, they explained why, but if I have to explain again I will. The best kind of contackt between the heat sink and the CPU is metal on metal, not a layer of thermal paste, thermal paste is designed to fill in the tiny or mircoscopic imperfections in both the CPU face and the heat sink face which may also have difficult to see indentations or dimples so the thermal paste fill in these to provide a bettter surface contact
@emerybryant Ita all about Heat disipation and It make sence when you think about a metal on metal contact it has a better heat disipation, If you have ever touche the bottom of a heat sink it is very cold, now think about putting a piece of fabric over the heat sink face and touch it again its still cold but not as much as it was without the fabric substitue the fabric as thermal paste and the hand or face you put the heat sink on of for a cpu, Catch my drift 83
@Jonathanp93 He didn't say he was overclocking it ^^
And yes, I understand how someone would be crazy to not OC their CPU, if it's unlocked. He bought it mostly for video editing anyway (The primary reason)
@Jonathanp93 The stock one that came with the CPU is pretty beefy. Plus, the stock is for the stock CPU. I don't think is going to over clock it, so the HSF is sufficient :)
Yeah your computer is better than mine. I built mines about 10 mounthes a go. It has a quad core i5 750/ GTS250 graphics/ western dig HD/red glowing fans/ 4g mem....but it is a very good gaming computer.
Hey jon, I am also building a computer and considering switching to solid state drives as the main source for the OS and currently, I have a 2tb hdd as the main source. I do want to know, how you go about using 120gb ssd and when installing programs like video editing and games, I've read forums saying sometimes, the program will install some component files into the SSD and the rest into the HDD, have you gotten any problems having the files in 2 separate drives?
I've recently bought a new PC to replace my 4-year-old laptop: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T, GeForce GTS 450, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB SATA HDD. For only £500 (about $800).
Thought it would be nice to post my PC specs rather than feed the PC vs Mac flame war.
@gmmatthew1 The 6 core Phenom II is a very nice CPU, but the GTS 450 might be quite the bottlenecker. I would reccommend upgrading to an AMD Radeon HD 6850 or 6870 if you're on a budget, or the 6970 if you have a fairly large budget. but if you're rich enough, go for the best GPU out there, the 6990.
@gmmatthew1 PC is better! NO mac is better! who gives a shit? they are the same thing they do the same thing BUT one costs more. nice rig btw for the price
lmfao .. it'll take me a year on my stupid fucking minimum wage job to buy parts for this .. how many bugs did you have to fix to get your computer working? i built my old one with my dad like 5 yrs ago which was pretty powerful at the time and it was buggy as hell for the first 4 weeks .. kept getting blue screen every other half hour .. if you installed video cards in a crossfire it wud've been sweet
The way you apply thermal paste is not the best method, a lot of air bubbles will be trapped inside the paste when you put the heatsink in place. The air bubbles will drastically reduce the heat transfer between the processor and heatsink, this will affect the temperature of the processor with 10-15 degrees. You won't get decreased performance, but you can expect a noticeble decrease in the predicted lifetime.
You're right, your computer is better than mine, but I"m happy with my MacBook Pro 13", Mid-2010 with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory, and NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB graphics. I'm perfectly mine with it :)
For the love of god I hope you keep this thing cool. I kept mine just a bit too warm and now the processor is falling down a slope of multiple breaks in the microscopic circuitry of the processor- each one making it overheat MORE. Granted it's been four years, but still. If you're going to spend 2k+ on a computer make sure everything stays below recommended temperatures even under heavy load.
NVIDIA graphics cards are great and all, but the issue is that their drivers are proprietary which makes it complicated to execute graphic-intensive programs.
That's why I'm not a huge fan of NVIDIA, because everything is proprietary. I'm more of a free software enthusiast.

loopyman123456 2 months ago
@EchoedTruth No, no, no. The Phenom II X6 is comparable in peak performance to a Core i7 930, depending on the programs used.
Six cores does not make the X6 as fast as a 980X, which is probably about 75% faster.
Also, the 580 is faster than the 6970, plus it supports GPU acceleration in Premiere Pro CS5 which the 6970 does not.

@josia75 Quite fast. He has an SSD :P
But, I doubt he keeps it on most of the time. No point in leaving it off all of the time....

@LOLfilms100 so what are your computer specs then?
LucMathlin 3 months ago
@LucMathlin Its a custom built one
windows 7 64bit and windows 8 dev 64 bit
i7 Processor Extreme Edition
2 IZ3D H220z1 screens
50tb hdd
10GB ram
SAPPHIRE HD 6990 Graphics card
LOLfilms100 3 months ago
@LOLfilms100 50 TB HDD? hmm, shoud rearly have a SSD in there, after reading a lot of reviews the best GPU for gameing isnt the 6990, its the ati 6950, it runs better gives a better average FPS and dont "micro pause" like the 6990 is reported to have + if your just playing games why do you need a i7 Extream edition ?? thats more of a workstation processor, a i7 sandy bridge is proberbly about the same speed for gameing that a i7 extream edition, bit OTT if you ask me, more money than sense.
LucMathlin 3 months ago
@LOLfilms100 My pc is also custom build, but its more of a video eding pc than gameing, it runs a 6 core AMD FX, 16GB DDR3 ram, GTX 470, 2x 1.5TB HDD on raid 1, 1x 120GB SSD running windows 7 64bitt
LucMathlin 3 months ago
Nope I disagree yours was put together poorly. i.e. thermal paste is only ment to fill small imperfection in the face of the heat sink, because the best way to transfer heat is metal on metal, so if you had small imperfections like dips and such these would reduced the area of the heat sink toching the CPU thus reducing heat transfer between CPU and heats sink
karlking1995 4 months ago 4
@karlking1995 - You must be illiterate, because I clearly mentioned in the video that the thermal paste I applied was exactly the amount directed in the manual that came with the CPU.
But hey, thanks for being an ass.

RoyAndKimble 3 months ago
@karlking1995 Yes, absolutely you need the paste to help transfer the heat.
The metal on the cooling fan and the metal on the CPU "sounds" like it should transfer heat just fine (I mean what better heat conductor than metal is there), but there is a reason every computer manufacturer in the world uses it. Why take a chance over a 1-5 dollar tube of cream.
Hayeshacker0NE 4 months ago
@Hayeshacker0NE Yes exactly But the whole purpose of thermal pastes is to fill in all the imperfections to give a better contact thus better heat transfer, at least we actuly got some inteligence on you tube not a load of stuck up arse holes.
karlking1995 4 months ago
@karlking1995 but if u put to much the excess will be forced out the sides so why does it matter exactly how much u use?
emerybryant 2 months ago
@emerybryant By any chance did you read my other comments properly, they explained why, but if I have to explain again I will. The best kind of contackt between the heat sink and the CPU is metal on metal, not a layer of thermal paste, thermal paste is designed to fill in the tiny or mircoscopic imperfections in both the CPU face and the heat sink face which may also have difficult to see indentations or dimples so the thermal paste fill in these to provide a bettter surface contact
karlking1995 2 months ago

PhysicsTowerTeam 4 months ago
@Jonathanp93 The stock one that came with the CPU is pretty beefy. Plus, the stock is for the stock CPU. I don't think is going to over clock it, so the HSF is sufficient :)

Thought it would be nice to post my PC specs rather than feed the PC vs Mac flame war.
gmmatthew1 4 months ago
@gmmatthew1 The 6 core Phenom II is a very nice CPU, but the GTS 450 might be quite the bottlenecker. I would reccommend upgrading to an AMD Radeon HD 6850 or 6870 if you're on a budget, or the 6970 if you have a fairly large budget. but if you're rich enough, go for the best GPU out there, the 6990.

FMcD 5 months ago
The way you apply thermal paste is not the best method, a lot of air bubbles will be trapped inside the paste when you put the heatsink in place. The air bubbles will drastically reduce the heat transfer between the processor and heatsink, this will affect the temperature of the processor with 10-15 degrees. You won't get decreased performance, but you can expect a noticeble decrease in the predicted lifetime.
SimenBergh 5 months ago
@SimenBergh The best method is described here arcticsilver(dot)com(slash)intel_application_method.html#

ExvidiousGaming 5 months ago
