Been following Leo's career for almost 30 years and he always brings a smile to my face and much admiration. Waiting for his new CD. I wish I heard him more on the radio here in Philly.
i remember, when i was about 10 years old, i put out some of my dads vinyls and one of them was my feet are smiling. i just listened three or four times to it, but it got burned in my mind...now i´m stoned and i´m really happy to find this song:)
His singing is very good if he keeps it in bearatone He knows his range. As far as his guitar playing he,s the best I ever saw in my 57 years on this planet.God bless you Leo.
Leo is still just as amazing as when I first heard his music, sadly not live, back in the late 70's. Great to see it posted here, thank you Mouldytone!
if the kid doesnt have the money he doesnt have the money, i hope he doesnt feel bad for grabbin music to expand his growing mind:) but ya kottke is one worth "supporting" by buying for sure.
What makes this song so interesting for me is he plays it like a maniac and sings it like a ballad. Of course, Ritchie Havens does this too ... but still, Leo does it his way and it works.
wow - these comments make me feel so old. i've been listening to leo since i was 16 - back in the 70's. i met him in charleston, sc in 75 - we kissed!
Hallo, I am an ~ 60 years old freak. I love such kind of music. I come from Germany, which is an unknown country in the middle of Europe, less than 80 Million inhabitants. People don´t know much about us. But we love him. He´s a craftsman. Nobody can reach his performance.
(Excuse my bad English, it´s not my native language). Thanx for the link. May next generations may have profit from this ...
Hello, im a 21 year old freak and i love this kind of music as well, i know germany, great country with great musical history, thought i might recommend Chet Atkins to you.
I'm from Germany and I love Kottke as well. I friend of mine told me about this guy SteelHand Bill plays like he has some Kottke influences, you should check him out
I first heard him do this one on a PBS music show (either "Live At Wolf Trap" or "Austin City Limits" and was immediately hooked. This version is a little different, but still the same mad, odd-ball brilliance and quirkiness. Thanks for posting it!
i am only 16 and i am the only kid i know who has ever heard of leo kottke and he is amazing, ive seen him once in portland maine and he was very good, if anybody has this mp3 could you perhaps message me
Dear crsdn I first heard this song on Leo`s extremely wonderful album of live recordings 'My Feet Are Smiling'. The CD is still widely available and full of brilliant songs. Might I suggest that instead of looking for a free mp3 that you do yourself a favour and actually buy the album? You`ll love it and the royalties will go to Leo. Win, win!
your not the only kid who has heard of him... I'm 18, in college up around joliet area, and guess what, I have tickets to see him on Jan 29th, i'm also working on covering most of his stuff.
PS. Buy yourself 6 & 12 String Guitar, less singing, some older people might know what i'm getting at.
I 1st heard "Hear The Wind Howl" in '73. He's a monster ! First yrs of University; folk music coffee houses; free liberal thinking; protests; streaking was all around especially on campus. I still have "My Feet Are Smiling" on vinyl. If you find the LP you'll love it. I think I'll dig out my old turntable & give the LP a spin. I may have worn out the tracks.
It's nice to hear Leo singing songs that are suited to his voice. He's always used to talk about how people didn't like it when he sings, but he's gotten a lot better.
I think his voice got better with age, that and it's more suited to the slower, quieter songs like this version of HTWH. Comparing this one to the one he tears apart on MFAS, he plays a lot faster on it, but his singing's not the best. I'd prefer listening to this any day. If anything I'd say he's probably a better concert-performer now than he was in the 70s...
does anyone know if a version of this is on either Greenhouse or Mudlark? my dad had both LPs nad i had a mixtape i brought w me to germany in high school, and havent heard this in over 20 yrs
Thank you. In my defence though I actually do have the technique and can nail that song most times I play it but I played it too fast and was way beyond the point of nervousness (first time playing in front of people after giving up music for about 5 years). That applies to the other two videos from that gig as well. I'm gonna take them down and put up new ones whenever I get a camera. But thanks for the positive criticism. ;-)
Saw Leo in "60's" in UofM coffee house, been in love ever since. There's nobody like him!!!!!!! I was in heaven when he made his first LP.

Us folks who feel comfortable wearing worn jeans and old shoes know, thanks to the power of recording, that Leo's music is worth passing forward...

I judge a singers voice by how well it fits his style of music and Leo's voice fits his music very well.

His voice isn't bad. Certainly not anywhere near as bad as Bert Jansch's anyway, another guitar hero of mine.

I am the only 30something I know who has been listening to Kottke for years. LOL. He's not mainstream, let's face it. :)
A writing instructor of mine in college played "My Father's Face" in class one day, and I was hooked after that.

This is from "My Feet Are Smiling" circa 1974 or 75. Back then, it was Mudlark.

thank you. so it was re-named? maybe thats why i cant find Mudlark anywhere on CD
mypoopfloats 2 years ago
That's not entirely true... different albums altogether. Mudlark was a studio album and MFAS was a live album... both are still available...
aemk612 2 years ago
My Feet are Smiling was a live performance from Dec. 1972 in Minneapolis. Mudlark came out in 1971.

One of my favorite Leo tunes! Very similar to the version from his live album from the mid-90s.
I love how he shakes the guitar at the end of songs like he's trying to shake out the last final bits of tone from it.
