Not sure if you're still checking this for responses, but I'm curious to know why you done have compression on the snare drum, except through the main mix. Thank you.
Awesome video! I learnt a lot about running PA systems. I didnt realise you need much more than 2 FOH speakers, 2 monitors, a mixer and a power am. had no idea about running compressors, eq's and crossovers. so now im left in a world of confusion and wondering if you could help.

Basically i have the same mixer as you do, and was wondering how to run guitar amplifiers and bass amps through the mixer for a more live sound.. please let me know a simple setuo for a small church band.. :)

@THEWalnutwarrior I actually, posted a couple vids on mic'ing electric guitar and bass amplifiers, as well as drums... Just for questions like yours. Check them out, it should help you. Then use the techniques in this video for mixing.
Great video! I have a gig tomorrow with a Yamaha MG24/14fx and the venue is kind of small. The band consists of two members, two samplers with tons of electro and bass sounds, a guitar and a microkorg. They are adding a vocoder tomorrow and I was wondering if the chain was in this format (mic/vocoder/console). This is just my second gig and my first time running FOH and Monitors in the same console.I'm not sure how it will go but this video definitely helps with some basics.
I have a Mackie CFX12 There are XLR main outs as well as 1/4 inch main outs whats the difference? can I use all four at once? and one more question when I use my 4 Sub Out's I get a dry mix (no Effects) Can I get a wet out?
Gret Video by the way I enjoy watching videos here you allways can learn something new thanks.
@Mroctober58 The XLR and the 1/4 inch jacks both serve the same purpose. But, the XLR out are ballanced and provide a better overall signal. Yes you could use both simultaneously. For example, lets say you had a videographer making a video and his camera has audio inputs. You could run him the stereo mix using the 1/4 inch jacks, while running the mains with the XLR. Sub sends, are dry sends, but you can go through an external effects processor and use a return on the mixer.
When you got to the end talking about the power amp leveling knobs, I've been making that mistake for years thinking they were volume adjusters, but luckily always keep them at 12:00, so it couldn't have been too bad all this time. Great video, very informative. Do you know what books would be really good to explain all the inserts, buttons, etc in detail? I know how to use the EQ really good, but when it comes to what goes where, other than the mains and monitors I get a little lost.
hey Jim great video, so is is main outs to the line eq then to the crossover then amps and speakers?, what about the auxes for the monitors?, I'm confussed in that part, thank you very much
@6sebastiancol you want to put the eq, compressor in the main inserts so it has a constant level. the main out goes to the crossover, then to the amps. monitors go out the auxes.
I'm not trying to start a debate, but I've been told by a reliable sound guy (Does stage & Sound for bands like: Maroon 5, Journey, Kenny Rogers and many others). His take; is to always run your power amps wide open giving you better head room, and you WON'T blow your horns this way. I'm confused ...
so you video is informative.... however you set your gain structure WRONG and it causes more issues the way you do it. the way you seem to do it is you set your faders at Unity, and then adjust your levels on the main meter in solo/PFL with the gain knob. If you ask any real sound man, thats the wrong way and you end up adding more noise to your system that way AND you dont get the maximum headroom out of your channels. The right way is to do the following: (see next post)
The right way to do it, is to leave your faders all the way down, then go into solo/PFL mode and set your levels on your main meters with the gain knobs.... then bring your faders up. this is correct gain structure and you get the most headroom and best signal to noise ratio with this method. so you arent really "wrong" and i apologize for using that word, but its not the best way to mix. still a good video!
Im gonna be very honest here. The information you have given in this video has been more helpful than what my college lecturers are teaching. So thank you very much!
Is it ok plug the bass guitar into mixer? prove it and why?
