Like you, i'm figuring out how to control the mpc4K with logic and Sysex. Mue and solo is working but i've got problems getting the part volume fader in multi mode to work correctly. The fader doesn't seem to change the two value bytes. I only get the LSB working correctly. The MSB switches between 0.00 and -60.0.
Too bad you didn't show midi editing, I'd like to know (if you zoom in enough) how much faster it would be to edit the midi notes, timing, velocity, length etc.
Technical stuff is just if you buy a touchscreen it works like a second monitor with an extra USB cable to carry the touch signal (a bit like a mouse). Connect it up, load up Logic and go into the environment and create Faders, buttons etc. to control whatever you like. Its really straight forward if you can use logics environment.
@foge1 what is the interface between the touch screen and the operating system though? I ask because there must be a software driver to interpret the touch signals isn't there? I was also told that OS X doesn't support touch screen. this is obviously not true but is there anything else you're doing?
FUCKING BRILLIANT!! I was thinking of doing exactly this! cause there arent many simple digital mixers around but this is so much better cause you can use it as an extra screen aswell!! am i right? It would be great to know some of the more technical aspects to how you do this before i buy some stuff.
It is entirely possible and will def be used in such ways. There is already a "pro" controller for the ipod touch which works VERY well. There is no need for a connection directly to the mac. It uses your current wireless router and a "server" application on the mac. It then translates your touches and input from the touch to midi events in logic pro. Apps like the AC-7 DAW controller will be ported directly to the ipad I imagine. And for a 4 dollar app you can't complain.
I wonder, do you need to apply any pressure when moving a fader or knob? And would a stylus work to hit those tiny mute and solo buttons of the default mixer?
Stylus has to be a soft material and then its not very accurate, so the mute buttons are still a bit too small for easy use, you can drop the screen resolution but then.... less tracks displayed at once. I tried a pencil with a rubber on the end but to be honest it was crap. You can get much better touchscreens than the old one I am using. I bought this because it was cheap :)
Oh well. Maybe they made the button sizes custumizable in Logic 9. ;-)
At least I know that multiple touch screens are possible. The TouchKit drivers allow you to do extended desktop nicely, so you don't need display mirroring. It also supports multiple touch panels well. So you can set up two large touch monitors and do the fine editing with a mouse or trackball.
TouchKit Panels (Google it) are 2mm thick glass plates with USB output. I'll contact them asking for a technology recommendation.
So I tried it out with a resistive touch screen. The specs said it requires 80g pressure, which is fine for pointing, e.g. using the transport controls. But for controlling knobs or faders it's a real pain. You need to press hard whilst rubbing with your finger (that's what she said) which is very unconfortable and doesn't really work.
Foge, could you elaborate on the model number of that ELO touch screen? The 1525L and 1545L can be purchased easily, but they're "surface wave", not "capacitive"
This is severely awesome. So much cheaper and versatile than a control surface. I'm thinking of getting a bunch of large touch screens to have every channel right there. But how did you make that custom mixing environment? The default logic mixer is almost too crowded to use with your fingertips, but yours is pretty perfect. Is there any online resources about creating your own virtual mixer?
I wrote an article for soundonsound which was published in the june issue in the Logic Notes section about how to do this. Should hopefully answer a few of your questions.
Awesome. Thank you very much. I'll do some research and see what the technical limits are. I'm planning on having two 22" widescreen touchscreens hooked up to a Mac Mini (2 display outputs) and make an awesome mixing workstation out of it. That should make some badass digital mixer for under a grand.
THink I'll make a video when it's done, I wanna build it into a wooden frame so the angle is like on a big mixing console.
I just got one 22" wide display, the add-on touch panel will follow in a few days. It's resistive though, which means I need to apply some pressure but on the other hand, I can use a pen for more precise stuff like knobs inside plugins and fine editing. It's 90 PPI, hopefully enough for using those tiny mute, solo and record enable buttons of Logic's mixer with the fingertips.
I can stack two mixer windows with 26 tracks on 1580x1050 pixels, so that's 52 channels strips at once. O.o
What resolution are you running? I bought a touch screen module for my 19'' wide screen that runs 1440x900 I was thinking I could only be comfortable with that.
I'm also buying an MPD32 (as my MPD24 is broken now) and I'm looking to have both the touch screen and MPD in an aluminium enclosure, sort of like, the mpc of the future. Maybe run my macbook pro in that enclosure as well, but i may have heat issues.

Can you help me to get this string correct ???
Much appreciated!

do you have any experience or know if the mimo touch screens will work well at all?

wait....how is the touchscreen connected to the Mac Book? HDMI? DVI? Bluetooth?

DVi and usb

thanks. so you use both ports simultaneously?
hey what do you make of the iPad? would it be possible (given it's stated specs) to use the iPad as a Logic control surface?

Looks good. Let me know how it works out.
The ELO drivers also support extended desktops etc. G

Wonder if an ELO 1725L or 1525L would work . Does it need to be serial or usb ? I'll definetly follow the guide from the SOS . Cheers !

The screen is an Elo touchscreen from ebay. No multitouch but I don't think Logic wouldn't natively support that anyway.
foge1 2 years ago
1024x728 only because thats the max supported by my screen.
touch screen and mpd could be really good, I have been thinking about an enclosure but haven't come up with anything I like yet.

Hello
first of all I wanna say thanks you made my day :)
can you tell us more about how you get it all to work
like driver issues with touchscreens or is it possible to use multi touch? can we use your templates?
I've posted the video on the logicprohelp forum
it would be perfect if you could answer a view questions over there
thnx again for showing this
(I also enjoyed the other video's keep up the good work)
