  • @kimmaytube #owned

Don't test the queen of beauty ;)

  • It's racist to claim that only mixed people can have beautiful hair. Look at this video! Black women have gorgeous hair when it's taken care of properly. I'm inspired! Why does Black have to mixed with another race in order to be beautiful? It doesn't!

  • lol at the are you mixed part!

  • try using ITS A MIRACLE NATURE'S OILS conditioning growth formula, it's great for keeping your hair soft and detangled

  • That is so true.

  • I can't rock an afro and retain length because it tangles too freakin much. I got all kinds of breakage when I wore it in an afro which I had been wearing for about a year. Two months ago I started wearing my hair in two strand twists and I already see growth. So I don't see what the problem with the video is if she's speaking the truth.

  • I do agree with this video. Not everyone can rock an Afro without going through a tremendous detangling process. Especially when your hair gets longer I can imagine what she has to go through just to wash and detangle. My hair creates knots and tangles as well when I do a wash and go. I had to stop doing those especially because winter is on its way and where a lot of protective styles and keeping it moisturized.

  • I am very proud to see a Black natural woman such as yourself become such a staple for this industry. Keep up the great work! If I had to voice an opinion I'd say that the reason why your Afro may have been tangled is because it didn't completely set during the stretching. I wear Afros a lot, & can actually factually (lol) run my fingers through them from root to tip. Hopefully this acts more as a tip than a retort, or what have you.

    Stay Blessed!

  • As much as I love your videos I have to disagree with afro being tangled and knotted. I have worn my hair in an afro and picking your hair is another form of strectching and detangling your hair while in an afro state. I have been natural for 5 1/2 years and my length retention is something I am proud of. I still love your videos I do get inspirations from them.

  • i don't think we should put our own hair down. Also i dont see the problem with putting hair in certain types. Listen it just makes sense to me, I have 4b hair there is no need for me to watch videos done by ppl wiht 3 or 2 hair and think I can do exactly the same thing. Doesnt mean I have a complex I love my 4b hair cause I love the way God made me.

  • I love this video and the ending was the cherry on top of my sundae of anger, lol. I abhor people who ask if a person of color is mixed when they have a "good" feature. Wake up people, black people are the original people, every feature is originally ours. So cut this "are you mixed" business.

  • This was very helpful I wonder y I would have so much breakage thanxz

  • hey girl i v been watching ur vdo for months and i luv it , i just need some motivation be cuz i am getting desperate . i have short natural hair which i love but my edges r almost bald . i'm avoiding gel etc.. because of my hair breakage, i cant find many hair style bcuz anything i do emphasize how thin my edges are. i don't know wat to do please help me to make my hair grow back thanks a lo. i cowashed my hair regularly and keep it moisturize but i feel like it is not enough

  • Actually, I think locs are the definition of tangled hair...

  • @olamina

Here is why I disagree with your statement. A loc is the definition of *matted* hair. Loc=shed hairs that have been matted together. An afro is the definition of tangled hair, because it implies that hair can be DEtangled.

Although locs can be taken down using a lengthy process, in no way is it comparable to a "tangled" afro.

Dictionary: Tangled = snarled, interlaced, or mixed up

Matted = entangled in a thick, mass covered with a dense growth or a tangled mass

    Not the same thing

  • tell it sisters well put @mzmocha818 and @kagome304 its pathetic clearly its kim's reeducating herself and effort that got her where shes at she said it more than once her hair is the longest it has ever been

  • Its natural for black natural hair to get tangled .Duh! Its easier for girls with shorter hair to rock afros because their length won't cause too much unmanagable tangling. Either way, caring for African American hair is hard at times. Different things work for different people

  • NICE SHOW "

  • Fall is upon us and with it comes dry air. How do you protect your hair?

  • LOL @ the man with ONE LOC !!

  • lol!!! i will never understand why some people feel that the only way black people can have nice hair is if there is some "mixing" going on. yeah, i'm mixed...my mom is black, and my dad is black as hell! you are so right about that unstretched hair being a tangled mess. i wear a lot of wash n gos and when it dries it feels so hard and crunchy. i am only 5 months totally natural, but i am going to try the braids.

  • I like rocking the Afro after wetting my hair in the shower because it curls up and looks really nice. Unfortunately, it also dries up rather quickly even with moisturizer applied (I think my water's pH has something to do with it). To detangle it, I just wet it again, hand comb and gently separate small sections, and twist it up to stretch it. Since I'm new to your page, I haven't mastered the pH balance of my haircare products yet, but will soon! Thank you for all your vids! Keep it up!

  • ? Most afros are acheived by detangling the hair then just fluffing it up if you've seen people wash and go then pick it out they are doing it terribly wrong, so if they did acheive an afro correctly it would be hassle free and 'pure' .

  • @PandasNoMore ur right! i wear my hair in a fro completely untangled and it doesnt get tangled. ive tried the "streched fro" and in my honest opinion it doesnt look good. It looks messy and supr frizzy and u wind up looking like u dont know how to work with ur hair

  • @MzMuChi3 I am with you on the stretched fro, I've been wearing my hair in an afro since I was little because of the ease of it. Finally someone knows a true fro! :]

  • LMAO @are you mixed? Very informative channel.

    Fierce&LO♥E

  • I wear an afro that isn't tangled. A good example of a very neat and clean fro is frequently worn by BeautifulBrwnBabyDol. That's pretty much how my fro is unless it's a twist out fro and that's the style I'm rocking that day. I think it's different for different people because my curl pattern is just slightly more loose than a lot that I see. Nothing better than driving down the "I" or especially along the beach with my fro blowing in the wind!! But I respect your choice - that's cool.

  • I hear ya. If I wear a wash and go, it turns into a wash and heck no. Way too much detangling.

  • ARE YOU MIXED?!

  • one lock????but all hair dreads if you don't comb it, even stright hair and I know no one would say a dread is a white persons natural hair state. I think the natural state is when each strand on our head is curlly the why it comes out our heads. I agree it's more work detangling afro but you could all ways define your curls(less tangles). And It's still an afro.

  • Thanks for the video. I didn't realize that an afro could cause more tangling.

  • Im not black, I am middle eastern, and i have pin straight, silky hair, but sometimes i really wish i had african hair. I really want "big kinky hair"! And you really personify the type of black women whose hair i absolutely appreciate! So beautiful.

  • i love u kimmaytube. thanks to you i grew my hair out to apl in 2 years. also with other youtube vloggers BUT, you were the one that gave me the most knowlegde about my one hair . so i thank you for that

  • so you don't do wash and go's?

  • u r probably the only bw ive seen with really nice long healthy natural hair who rocks styles that are practical and elegant- i hate those funky natural hair styles you make me reconsider my relaxer but only for 2 minutes lol!

  • So beautiful

  • The ending of this video was HILARIOUS!

  • Esperanza Spalding must have long hair...she wears it in an afro

  • @2glam4aUsername Also, Kim NEVER said she didn't wear afros, at all.In fact, had you listened more closely, you would've heard her say that she will wear a BRAID OUT afro. That is different from simply wearing one's hair in a natural afro state, on a daily basis.Furthermore, unless you, yourself, are Esperanza Spalding you really don't KNOW what METHODS she uses to take care of her naturally curly hair. She may braid her hair, as well. She may put her hair in pony tails & braid.Who KNOWS?U DON'T

  • @2glam4aUsername I bet it'd be close to waist-length if she stretched it.

  • Comment removed

  • @2glam4aUsername It's ok to have opinions but it's oh... so much better to deal in facts! It will take you much farther along in life. I won't rub it in just know that life has a lot to teach all of us but we must listen and learn and rely on facts MORE and assumptions, less. The fact is kinks=breakage and protective styling (braids, twists) not only lessens the occurrence, it strengthens and protects the hair from even natural elements (heat/humidity) which also can contribute to breakage.

  • Sooooooooo basically you can't get your hair into an actual afro. Like Jackson 5-ish afro. Of course shrunken hair will result in more tangles, but some afros can be stretched more

  • @2glam4aUsername Folks like you sound so young and inexperienced. I mean, ANYONE, who has worn natural hair for more than a few years KNOWS that it is unwise to wear afros for the EXACT reasons Kim gives. It's not only an OBVIOUS fact. It's REALITY!!! Furthermore, I doubt if Esperanza Spalding, who is of mixed heritage with an Hispanic, Native American and Welsh mother & African-American father, should be used as an example of how to take care of 4a and 4b textured hair. It's LAUGHABLE & SILLY!

  • @manyara02

You sound so venomous. Now that is laughable, once one gets past how cuckoo you sound. "Folks" like you sound so weird. Sooo you're implying Esperanza doesn't have type 4 hair because....SHE'S MIXED? I don't know the woman's background, couldn't care less. I'm actually a 4c btw, I just stumbled upon this vid after watching her The Science of Black Hair review.

Hope you don't bust another vessel reading this :)

  • @2glam4aUsername I am quite familiar with Esperanza Spalding and I KNOW she doesn't have type 4 hair. If you, yourself, were familiar with her, you'd know that she does NOT have type 4 hair. It is really OBVIOUS!! Again, folks like you make me LAUGH!! Kim not only knows what she's talking about, she's thorough, mature and knowledgeable. Have a good day!!

  • @manyara02 Esperanza definitely has type 4 hair.

  • @KTBEverlasting Esperanza Spalding brushes her hair as often, as possible and uses shea butter, etc. She shared that much during an interview with 'Parlour Magazine' on 8/17/10. If my niece, who has type 3b/3c hair, uses very little product on her hair & brushes it, she easily gets a huge afro which might make you think it's type 4. It's really very, very easily done. But, on the other hand, if she uses too much product she can get a wet, weighed down, greasy look. Natural hair is very versatile.

  • @manyara02 Thank you for your novella. But I still think Esperanza has type 4 hair. Her hair has tight curls which is what type 4 hair is associated with.

  • @KTBEverlasting Oh well. Such is life. Those who can will and those who don't won't! SIMPLE!

  • @manyara02 I've seen closeup pics of her hair and that is not that 3 type hair (even though 3c and 4a hair are not that far)

  • @KTBEverlasting It isn't 4!

  • @manyara02 I left you a link on your channel comment (Urls don't work on regular comment) What hair type does it look like?

  • Comment removed

  • @KTBEverlasting Knowing anything about African-textured hair, one knows you must keep your hair braided or twisted to retain length and health of the hair. I wore afros over 20 years ago and I know that Kim Love not only knows what she's talking about, she's evidence of what happens when one gains knowledge...putting assumptions to the wayside. I prefer to deal with facts and those who don't will not receive positive results. It's a choice: Choose knowledge or ignorance. It's just that SIMPLE!

  • @KTBEverlasting FYI: Esperanza did an interview with curlynikkidotcom on 7/14/10 where she defines her hair regimen: "I usually wash my hair once a week. I then apply a mix of Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Olive Oil and Tea Tree Oil to my wet hair, brush it .., set my hair in 8 twists and allow it to air dry. The twists not only help to set my hair, but they also KEEP IT FROM TANGLING as it dries. In between washing sessions, I'll re-apply my butter mix and twist my hair.."No assumptions just FACTS

  • @KTBEverlasting I come from a family of mixed children.I have relatives with type 3 hair and it turns out that you can actually make type 3 look like type 4 if you use certain products that encourage puffiness and kinkiness. It's really not that difficult. The difference is type 3 hair, in its natural state, is much MORE manageable than type 4.Hands down!! I know whites who wear afros quite well. However, if they did not make any efforts to make their natural hair look like an afro..wouldn't work!

  • @2glam4aUsername FYI: Esperanza Spalding did an interview with curlynikkidotcom on 7/14/10 where she defines her hair regimen: "I usually wash my hair once a week. I then apply a mix of Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Olive Oil and Tea Tree Oil to my wet hair, brush it .., set my hair in 8 twists (she said it) & allow it to air dry. The twists not only help to set my hair, but they also KEEP IT FROM TANGLING as it dries. In between washing sessions, I'll re-apply my butter mix and twist my hair.."

  • @izeprnzz like i said check out cynthiarf...thicker and longer and like i said im only nine months in itz no srgument read what i commented thanks!

  • "ARE YOU MIXED?!" lol. That was random and had me laughing. Great vid.

  • @gwyn247 soo not tryin to argue but nine months of hair vs five years its easier to wear an afro at nine months...the hair is shorter n less tangling.

  • i keep my hair a afro on my hair and i keep my hair in untangled state.

  • I totally agree. Shrunken fros mean more detangling time for me. Its too much work to be worth it. I can feel my ends after wearing a shrunken style like that for a day and it makes me feel so guilty and definitely sets me back!

  • I wear an afro and I've been natural for 9 months.I'm 4c.I cowash daily when I do wear an afro and cover my hair with a stocking cap when I sleep. I fingerpick my hair out ,pat it down, and accessorize. I agree stretching decreases single strand knots.Maybe after my first year it wont be as easy for me but cynthiarf does it and I feel safe saying her hair is thicker than yours. Not trying to start nothing but just an observation. But to each his own. We all have beautiful hair.

  • love your video...i am subbing now x

  • Hey guys, check out my videos on dry hair remedies! go to my channel: jasminebard

  • but can't afros be combed? Honestly, that's what I picture an afro as. Picked out/combed natural hair.

  • thank u for turning up the volume. my speakers are very weak . i think its better for those with loud speakers to turn down than ppl like me with weak speakers that turn up to the loudest it can go and still struggle to hear it.......

    thanks again :-)

  • I love your hair! I am learning a lot from you.

  • Thank you for this video. People ask me all the time why I don't wear my hair in a shruken afro and I tell them the mainly the same things you were mentioning as well. I think it's great when the hair is shorter but I've been natural for about 3 years now and I will never rock a shruken afro, not because it's not beautiful but because I will pay for it later! :-)

  • i wear my hair in a fro all the time lol...juss wear it and when you get home you juss wet it and it's suuuuupppppperrrrr easy to comb and than you can tie it up and go to sleep...ummmmmmm btw im tryna find the video of the leave in conditioner u made and i can't find it...help me out plz

  • @2hafstylezk Kimmaytube Leave-in Conditioner recipe is found on her channel page. Simply scroll down to the center of the page. You can't miss it!

  • @manyara02 ty = D

  • PS...one question that I will not address (with a pic at the end)....so clever

  • Kimmay. I love it. You are such the black woman for the rest of us to look up to. Never bow down to address foolishness if someone tries to pull you out of character again. You have way too much going for you. I am so enjoying your videos. I'm almost addicted. LOL! All I can say is THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU and because of your hard and excellent work, you deserve many of the blessings that come your way. -with love, a grateful sistah

  • I love kimmaytube channel,,, i have learned lot and the ph info ,, who knew i am a faithful follower .. love it keep educating us about our beautiful hair,,thanks

  • Okay .. posted my question before the end of the video.. I have less than 6 inches so I do the wash and go ..Until I more length.. Sorry - next time I'll finish the video before commenting.

  • Hey Kimmay,

I never did the afro either. I had about 4 inches after the big chop and I decided to coil my hair. When my hair was long enough, I did the twio strand twists. That was about 8 years ago. I agree with you 100%!

  • My hair is short .. I don't have the many options that you have. What can I do??

  • LOL@ "Are you mixed?"

  • The ending made me crack up!

  • Comment removed

  • Great video. Once again, you gave very logical explanations to why you do not wear a stretched out fro. Not an opinion like many youtubers give, but logical practical information that makes sense!! Thanks!

  • afro isnt tangled hair, but you can can be tangled with an afro.

  • Ahaha i like how you went into that voice, "ONE GIGANTIC LOC"

  • Wanted to ask what to do if your hair isn't long enough for anything but a Afro what other styles can a person do for the hair

    Thanks

  • excellent video, thanks for sharing, i decided to go natural too, i did not relax my hair since november, so you are a nice example for me. kisses from France

  • BAHAHAHAHA..the one loc is the purest form of unmanipulated hair..It's so funny but logically true..My face hurts now I cant stop laughing!

  • LOL @ the end. Yeah, a lot of ppl don't understand that you don't have to be mixed to grow your hair long. All one has to do is avoid the heat and chemicals.

  • Hi Kimmay, I am alittle confused what do you mean in by @3.30 -if you have 6 inches of hair or less you won't have that problem? What problem? Thanks, love your vids!

  • thats way to funny......."ARE YOU MIXED" BWHAHAHAZHAH >__< now is it ok for me to use heat on my hair as far as blow drying...I dont have the leisure of allowing my hair to air dry.

  • @janeblow80 I noticed my hair grows faster when i don't use any heat including the blow dryer. I am on a no heat challenge. I twist my hair after washing/conditioning with my leave in mixture. Air dry overnight.

  • @Onegurrrlrev chile......Bless you.....Idk...I tried that before I put this hair style in last week and I was having a pure D FIT!!!! Omg......like it dried but it wasn't stretched...I like my hair stretched when I french braid it. Ima give it a try for the remainer months of summer. I've been growing my natural hair for seven years, I am challenging myself NOT to cut if off and be done with it......Natural hair is WAYYYYYYYYY harder to deal with.....I swear my hair has a mind of its own. lol

  • LOL Yes...Yes! I am trying to move out of the wash and goes and afro things.

  • Very informative and so very true. I learned this the heard way and in the end my hair was in a lot of slip knots and by the time I figured out why it was happening I had to cut more hair off and just start new. Knowledge is great:)

  • You were right about if the afro is kept it will be tangled and may form a giant lock BUT that's only if you don't know how to take care of it. True if you comb it out and pat it down it will be a little tangled, but I know many people who wear afros and if you were to put your fingers through it, they would go through without stopping. Not trying to insult you or anything because I do love your videos, I just wanted to inform you that it is possible to have a detangled nice looking afro :)

  • @J0J0B3ANTvGasp The only people I know who do not have a lot of tangles in their hair who wear afros, braid their hair. That is what Kimmaytube was saying. Kimmay acknowledges that she, herself, wears a afro after a braid out but will not rock a afro without braiding because it kinks. That's a fact for any person who wears an afro since that is a style that many of us have worn, at one time or another in our lives. African textured hair responds much better to braiding. Afros w/o braiding=breakg

  • Your hair is sooo pretty! People want to know if you're mixed because it gives an excuse or reason why your hair is so long. Instead of giving you props for figuring out what works for your hair, people often want to make an excuse as to why you've got that hair and they don't ...hence, the "Are you mixed?" question. A lot of us are still struggling to figure out our own personal hair growth regimens. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!

  • @mzmocha318 U said it, PERFECTLY! Rather than learn from Kim and take her advice, they'd rather find reasons to excuse why their hair isn't long or hasn't grown long and beautiful. That's a problem for a lot of us. Instead of dealing with our unwillingness to venture out and learn new techniques & ways to solve a problem, we make a conscious choice to excuse our behaviors based on lack of knowledge and/or time spent with learning about ourselves. It permeates in too many areas of our lives.

  • @mzmocha318 EXACTLY. b/c lots of Black women who are not mixed generally are not known or seen to grow they natural hair to this length. (generalizing here)" most " mixed women have an extra due to the mexican/indian/euro they have from their ethnicity. that's all.

  • @VICTOYA I don't feel they have an extra over us, though. We (meaning those of us with the really coily, kinky hair here) haven't figured out what works for our respective heads. We know our hair grows, and grows quite well in most instances, too, but it's SO hard to figure out that personal formula for our heads where we can keep that length going. The longer our natural hair gets the more it seems to require some straight up BABYING!! LOL

  • @mzmocha318 i think i did say i was generalizing ...to make the point that it is the "typical" reason why their hair (mixed women) grows so fast & long. its no mystery we have been conditioned to believe that our hair (those of us w/kinkier coily hair) is not able to grow to this length. indeed this perspective is due to a lack of knowledge, of which I am so glad sistas like the one who made this video take the time to inform & educate us. preciate the build sis! :]

  • @VICTOYA -- P.S. I, myself, have bra length hair for the FIRST time in my life, but guess what? My hair got that length because I went to locs!! YEP...my hair demands that I leave it the hell alone...I put moisture in it, keep my scalp clean, and cover my hair at night. I do separate my locs to avoid the one big loc syndrome. LOL The next steps for me are diet, exercise and drinking plenty of water -- all of which are an ongoing struggle for me. Good luck on your own hair journey!

  • @mzmocha318 wow! thats awesome. im discovering the same thing....that my hair likes to be left alone. I've found that i don't need to use a heap of products either. just simple moisturizing, washing & letting it just BE grows my hair wildly. I've made improvements in my diet as well. Im so glad I made the decision to go natural. One of the better decisons I've made in my LIFE! Matter of fact, once I did, my teenage daughters (17 & 13) began 2 see the beauty & wanted 2 go natural too!

  • @VICTOYA WORK it, Girl! LOL

  • @mzmocha318 Amen sista!

  • Comment removed

  • @mzmocha318 Or a reason why theirs is not long "my hairs shorts cause I'm black, her is long cause she's mixed"....NO your hair is short because your not taking care of it properly. Question why do so many of us put what's ours down or think what's ours is inferior to others that's a inferiority complex if I ever seen one.

  • @kagome304 AMEN!! Our hair is just different...no better than any others but certainly no WORSE!!

  • @kagome304 Also just caues someones hair is short does not mean they dont take care of it, sorry. that was my main point for replying to this post. my hair is short and i take care of it well. It is what it is but I'm still beauitufl with my hair short or long cause that's how God made me. dueces :) its an assumption to say someones hair is short b/c they dont take care of it. also ppl wiht short hair and coily or type 4 need to just embrace it.

  • I enjoy watching your videos and have learnt a lot from them, but I have not been able to watch your recent uploads. reads, not available in your region? is there a new setting you are using while posting videos or ? thanks

  • My hair is texturized right now. Would I have to shave my hair off if I decided to go natural?

  • Awww,..I LOVE your hair. :)

    You sure you're not mixed???

    :)))

    (Just playing with you...)

    But serious,....you look gorgeous!

  • SOOO TRUE!!! i have been natural for year and half, and have used the wash and go, and have notced that by me wearing a afro for year and half, my hair has broken off, despite the expensive products i used, thanks for the video

  • Love it! Point well made!! Good job!

  • @brinacc She's coming out with a new album? Do you know when? Awesome!

  • @flatlanderdot I don't think the release date has been set but I'm basically excited about anything Bjork, go to her website bjork.com I'm sure they'll post something soon about it :)

  • i love a shrunken afro...i hardly wear one, and when i do i go to great lengths to detangle before i comb it out at the end of the day...i like it because i just love the texture i think it's beautiful, the kinks and curls and such anyway my hair is shorter, im sure if it was longer i'd understand more because it'd be more work

  • lol whut? im mixed white/black and my hair is only to my shoulder length when natural, why do they think that black women cant grow long hair! u dont have to be mixed to grow long hair!! need to ge t that in people heads

  • @debidebs1 I totally agree with you. I don't understand why people think that you have to be mix to have "good, long hair". It's about how you take care of your hair, not your heritage. I believe the media here in America likes to influence people with lies instead of the truth.

  • i'm british but my family is pure african (meaning both my parents are from africa and their decedant as well are from africa) so we are pure black with no history of any foreign race in our blood yet my sister and mum both have very long hair... which is why i don't understand why alot of americans think u have to be mixed to have long hair.. it makes no sense

  • @debidebs1 Because a lot of (black) Americans have something to learn about their hair, period. Using hair products that are basically Vaseline with some berry juice and olive oil, massaging the scalp with it, and using insane amounts of heat and pulling at the hairline with weaves and stuff kinda stunts the growth. Of course, this is what a lot of black Americans grow up doing, so it makes sense that most of us think our hair is meant to be shorter. Not saying that it's right, but..

  • @bbnne1 thank you for advising. I am fighting to keep the tangles out my hair because of my kinky curly texture, the strands intertwine. I will definitely take your suggestion into consideration. Can I get glycerin from a health food store?

  • Makes a lot of sense. I have been growing my hair about a year now and the knots are many I am definitely experiencing breakage, having to pull them apart I know I am too rough on my hair What is the best conditioner and simple regimen I can follow to prevent further breakage? I am not doing so great keeping away from the afro state.

  • Really now, who isn't "mixed" coming from Afro-American/Caribbean heritage? Not an appropriate question to ask, in my opinion. Great work...keep it up!

  • I totally agree with you. The more length you have when you wear your hair loose, the more tangling happens. Stretching definitely helps. You are totally on point with this vid. (LOL@are you mixed)

  • This is an awesome video! love the info and it makes so much sense. Im over here contemplating if I should stop leaving my hair in a curly afro state because its starting to get detangled so much.I usually condition it ,finger come it with some product and let it air dry, and its nice but by the end of the day and the next morning, its as if I never detangled it! :-/. Im only almost 2 years but its already tangling up my brain! lol. loved your hairstyles!

  • I'm standing in my bathroom, looking at my hair. It looks damaged, limp and a little lifeless, despite me cutting shitloads off the other day (with a blunt pair of scissors; whoops). Watching your video has inspired me to wash my hair and put it in a protective style. Unfortunately, I'm mixed so my hair won't act the same as yours but your tips can help nontheless.

  • One Dread lol !!!

  • Kim - you're hilarious (are you mixed?). This is a great point about afros, I realized this a year into my hair journey and decided to loc my hair based on the lifestyle, styling options, and time that I want to dedicate to my hair.

  • Kim I love your videos and yes this is the first time EVER that I've seen someone with my EXACT hair type!

Keep it coming girl, YOU ROCK, plus I'm loving the positive energy. You're one smart sista :)

  • Kim I love your video and yes this is the first time EVER that I've seen someone with my EXACT hair type!

Keep it coming girl, YOU ROCK, plus I'm loving the positive energy. You're one smart sista :)

  • its true an afro on long hair its full of knots .l use to have long afro hair so l know what your talking about

  • 0:22 you look adorable!

  • This explains alot. I was wearing a fro and wash and gos, which caused my hair to have fairy knots and tangles.

  • my 4c hair constant afro state= hot mess of split ends, but when I blow dry ie strech my 4c hair i get hallelujah thank you!!!

  • You go girl... So Knowledgeable, I have learned a lot just from this video,, u r awesome

    THE CHAMP.........

  • ROTF!!!!

I only have one question; "Are you mixed??" LOL! I'm just kidding! I loved that when you threw the pic up from your childhood. I have to say you are one of my hair inspirations. You go ahead and rock your hair the way you do girl. I'm with you the same way on that one.

  • TOTTALLY AGREE!!! I will only wear my hair in an afro if i want it to be a style. Maybe once a year!

  • Hi Kimmay! I was able to see this video, so I'm happy. But a lot of your videos say "not available in your country" to me. Will you please do a comparison to see what the difference is in uploading this video and the flat ironing video (which I cannot see)? Please and thank you.

  • Well the afro IS your hair's purest state but that doesn't mean you havto wear it that way. Moreover, it's not as though twist outs and updos are sacrilege. They are simply methods of taking care to lesson knots and breakage of your hair. And anyone that thinks that women rock the afro in Africa; far from it. My family's Nigerian and they've all got relaxers and weaves and even tribes in the village that wear their hair natural use braided styles (cornrows, etc) or they keep their hair short.

  • awwwwwww I love the end pic of you in 4th grade. You were soooo adorable!... not that you arent now...

  • Thanks for the info... Those are all great reasons not to rock an afro..

  • Kimmay...I'm only a 10 months into wearing my hair in its natural state (approx 6.5-7" of growth) and I wear an afro often. As it grows, I have noticed much more tangling and knotting and am having to make some adjustments in my hair routine. Glad I clicked on this vid, as it just sparked an "a HA" moment!! LOL Though I love the 'fro, I, too, will have to soon give it up and/or go with the stretch methods...

  • So true but the questions people ask is a bit umm dumb...anyhoo 3rd year and i'm constantly cutting tiny knots at the ends....love my afro but now i know better thanks...

  • Thanks for sharing your hair Journey! I would like mine to grow and be healthy as it can be.

  • love this video

  • @dunk3rsMJJ I've never seen them tried on natural hair as long as hers, and I want to get an idea of what they'll look like once my hair gets longer. BEFORE I've spent 100 bucks.

  • @kimmaytube Will regular light protein treatments help combat this?

  • I LOLed when you started talking about that one loc!

  • Hey Kimmay, would you do a Curlformer tutorial? If you have time in the next few weeks?

  • thanks...that explains a lot

  • I used to wear an Afro a lot, but it always end up tangled, and I suffered a lot of breakage from that.

  • Kimmay, I commented earlier. But I want to say that there are alot of naturals that appreciate you. Thanks for the continuing tutorials about our hair. I have been natural since 2004 but suffered alot of breakage and resulted in doing big chops and the cycle continued. Now being one of your subscribers, I have learned alot more about my hair and it's now growing. Thanks Kim:) I really mean it. Thanks.

  • @hnbrown104

    You're sweet. Thank you. :o)

  • You are right Kim, if I wear an afro for an extended period, my hair is a tangled mess, no matter what products I use. I would really like someone to demonstrate wearing an afro with tangle free hAir afterwords smh

  • I agree with Kimmay about her theory on afro styles. That's why when you see naturals with much longer hair wear their hair in twist or twist outs, etc. The comment on Rustic Beauty who has very long hair, you see her hair in most protective styles. The same goes for curlychronicles. I have learned a lot from Kimmaytube and I have been natural since 2004.

  • "So many falsely believe that the afro is our hair's pure state"

So far everyone I have talked to about natural hair have this assumption/picture in their head of tangled 'nappy' hair. People need to hear this.

  • I loved the younger photos of you...classic!

  • i love wearing my hair in an afro and many other natural styles. I get what your saying about it being a lot of work with long natural hair, i'm only a year and a half in my natural hair journey. But ive seen many women like Rusticbeauty who have almost waist length natural hair and they wear it in an afro.... To each his own, and anyways you are a very busy woman so it is impractical for you. Great vid by the way, i just hope when my hair gets longer i can wear it in an afro whenever i want. :)

  • Love it thanks for tips...

  • Afros are not our hair's true state because someone with no African heritage that also has curly hair can end up with the same matting and tangled results when they leave their hair out and un-manipulated. Lol even people with no curly texture or slight waves could still end up with the same mess when they don't manipulate it as well. But they don't suffer from the knots problem. Think about it. Besides a true Afro isn't un-manipulated and worn the way it "grows out of our head" cuz in order to
