  • shit

  • base guitar as meat

  • I thought they said "That's what she said, that's what she said"

  • Definitely a "period piece" I reckon. That said and uderstood...totally fuckin cool!

  • That fuckin' bass. God damn.

  • mouth to mouth im here coz LOL

  • The Stranglers are fuckin awesome!!!Great Band!!! Probably the founders of Post Punk...

  • Reminds me of Squeeze's "Take Me I'm Yours".

  • @meatcigars Wasn't that out around the same time? I remember them both as a kid. That rough synth and the heavy bassline really dates it as "aftermath of punk" music. Personally, I love it, though it sounds dead old.

  • @GameOf2Halves

It would take me a millenium to explain. Wikipedia !

  • I dreamt last night that Jet Black and Hugh Cornwell were in my kitchen.Jet was absolutely lovely but Hugh was a miserable ignorant git!! I asked Jet why he had a beard in a punk band? but was too scared to ask is he older than the Beatles!!!! I think there's an Half Man Half Biscuit song there!!!!!

  • ..was my favourite punk song then and still is. Can't get tired repeating how much ahead of their time they were. Their musicianship, their guts, subversive attitude and Hugh's golden yet aggressive timbre continue to have an impact upon individuals all over the world.

  • @unbefestigt i cannot disagree a jot!

  • stranglers. germany like you - its me

  • we saw cornwell yesterday in schrobenhausen, germany

and went for a few drinks with him...such an interesting man

and guess what? he said "Golden Brown" is about smoking smack...

    suprise, surprise! :D

  • Black And White is the best album

  • wholy fuck that bass line!!!!! typical P bass

  • Black and White got a copy in 79 the war was still going . I played it every day I was drunk all the time, shooting up same as half the bloody unit. One guy would always sing this song nice and sleazy whenever in the bush till some fat corporal shut him up, .Often wonder if that dude survived a true deviate would even bonk the black girls The singing guy not the corp .At the time I thought that morally repugnant alright to stick a needle in your arm man was I a fucked up wanker.

  • One of the best bass riffs ever!Apart from(probably even BETTER!) : the BREEDERS :Cannonball(on their album The Last Splash)....Saw the Stranglers, several times in Brixton,London -great concert at the Academy...back in them days. Creashonrebel

  • Nice 'N' Sleazy!!

    Nice 'N' Moody lol!

    WTF they on?

    Apart from 'Golden Brown'

  • @utubescooby1

Adrenalin most of the time. Apart from a few pints and some "wacky backy". According to their drummer Jet Black, "Golden Brown" was about toast.

  • @roddy76to86 according to the book by Hugh Cornwell it is about both heroin and a girl , but i have also read the statement you said above i don't know what to believe.

  • @bubbles199348

That was half the fun with The Stranglers, you never knew what to believe ! According to JJ Burnel it was about the ozone layer burning up. As for Hugh Cornwell, a good storyline to help sell his book ? So I don't know what to believe either. I didn't like the song anyway.

  • @roddy76to86haha i love the song they have very , the stranglers always had very good bass in there music..

  • @bubbles199348 the toast is a joke lol

  • @bubbles199348 Its about smack Toast you taking the piss? They were when they said that. Go read a book, listen to lyrics its about Heroin.

  • what a tuuuuuuuune !

  • ROCK PARTY :)

  • can anybody tell me what synthesizer greenfield used on black and white?

  • perfect song........!!!

  • great stuff!!! will always love the stranglers!

  • this song represents my life!!!

  • One of my favourite songs of all time , never tire of it.

  • What terrible quality! Just awful!

    Actually, it is quite good.

  • @MervueMeringue

What do you mean, the song or the audio quality ?

  • @roddy76to86 The quality. But the song could be worse, too.

  • @MervueMeringue The quality is 1000% higher than most of what one could find around here !

    You must be joking !

  • Im Nice and Sleazy ! x

  • @TheBeastBird90 Oh! cool!

  • @andymouse123 very :)

  • @andymouse123 Yeah;)Happy new year too;)Love Beth x

  • great song !! nice music .....!!!!!!!

  • sick bassline and fucking heavy english accent!

  • @MrKavliaris

Don't you mean SLICK bassline ? And what do you expect from an English punk band; Johnny Cash ?!

  • @roddy76to86 bassist was french

  • @cheesynimrod

If your trying to confuse me you've succeeded ! Would you care to explain ?

  • @roddy76to86 no brother,I meant SICK bassline (sick in a good way)..and I really like this accent..since I'm Greek,I wish I had an accent like this and not the shitty one I have!

  • @MrKavliaris

Sorry for my misunderstanding. And there's nothing wrong with a Greek accent !

  • Comment removed

  • Great Bass sound!

  • like the lyrics say, does it every time.

  • that jj burnell bass is fucking epic!

  • NICE!

  • would totally be a good song without the bass too

  • best bass line ever with hanging around jean jacques burnell is the best

  • jean jacques you are a fantastic bass player. such amazing sound

  • This song, lyrically and vocally, is completely retarded, and i hate the keyboarding, but because of the sheer awesomeness of the bassline, and how addictingly he says nice and sleazy, i cant stop listening to it

  • @scargill8 the retarded aspect is a reflection of the time it was made. A post punk snarl.

  • de la bonne musique des 80 !

  • There are some songs that you can't even imagine how empty and shallow they'd be if you took out the bass. That's one of them! And yeah, like many said... wicked bassline :)

  • Only fake prime minister was the unelected Gordon Brown mate..no lets not sully great stranglers music with Labour sleaze politics eh ILiveOnMyBoat???

  • @mightywhite41 hmm lets re-assess the coalition and see first hand how they sully it with a new tax nation of sleaze balls.

The tory barstools always screwing the working and middle classes whilst claiming there is no class structure (in their eyes the poor don't exist)...

Stranglers music however remains steadfast and good... good bassline as with peaches both lyrically inept of course agreed and has nothing to do with politics...

Rats rally though c'mon good stuff Barnsey

  • been lookin 4 this 4 a looong time ty!

  • savvidakis ta mpoutakia!!

  • The lyrics are quite nonsensical indeed, but then like you said its the music that's more important.

  • @WoodRatGirl lyrics can mean something different to you or me of course to me its about deception, underhandedness, taking advantage and lies the bible, koran etc

  • @edwards21416

What the hell are you blabbering on about? ;)

Don't talk about Religion on a Punk song!

  • @WoodRatGirl and why not ? dont you get it ? no for sure. that wot punk woz about .wake up. oops too late. wood rat girl. explain the name.

  • @roverthreefive

This comment is complete bollocks !

  • @roddy76to86 YEP!.........squeak!

  • @WoodRatGirl well said ratty!!!

  • 4 steps to remember who you are. turn off your telly, switch off your radio, and use your newspaper to set fire to your mobile phone :-

    groovy side-affects:

your brain comes alive again.. yippee!!..in the first month youll be that bored youll maybe start to read books....mmm..books! im sorry i cant thi..! now i remember.. stress, yeah stress . fuk stress, & how about cash! thats right cash! youll save more money. in this greedy world you need money. nice n sleazy does it

  • That Bass is nice & dirty...

Dedicated to the new fake prime minister who couldn't even get a majority vote from the sun readers or murdocks shitty little sleazey media empire.

  • Now, now, let's not sully great music with politics !

  • @roddy76to86 um....aren't punk music and politics kind of...nevermind.

  • @digglescham

I think I see what you're getting at, but this was produced over 30 years ago ! And it wasn't even about politics.

  • @ILiveOnMyBoat

The Stranglers successfully sued News Intl for using the song Always The Sun

  • @ILiveOnMyBoat HA! That's classic

  • @ILiveOnMyBoat Ruin a great song with politics then you faggot.

  • @ApertureAsshole - very good use of the sun reader insult. Nice n Sleazy name too

  • seen um in rock garden spot on!

  • Regarding the gig in Mûnster saturday 15.may 2010; soddoff. Heck you old hags even made the sound friggin great after a while.

  • They should dedicate this to MPs

  • Indeed, their signature tune !

  • My favourite stranglers song. It's about the time the band were invited back to the clubhouse of the Amsterdam Hell's angels.

  • @roddy76to86,norvegicusbass & Barristered- Oh.... The Stranglers were still on the stage as all i could see were the strippers lol!!

  • Most Awesome bass line ever !

  • The live version of this from Battersea Park is one of the best live tracks ever... if you ignore the strippers on stage... or not !

  • Why would you ignore the strippers?

  • I was wondering about that. Or it's more of a case of HOW can you ignore the strippers ?!

  • great Great GREAT BassLine

  • It's about one of the most kick ass bass leads ever. You got a better one? Stanley Clarke and School Days maybe... other than that I'd like you to just say thank you either way I don't give a damn.

  • Got it all WRONG "roddy", it's about the "discovery" of the "new world" (Amerika).

  • Perhaps you could explain for the rest of us how you came to this conclusion ?

  • Listen to the words! No offence meant eh? Hey, maybe I've got it all wrong, but that's MY interpretation. When u listen to it, picture Conquistadores heading west, ready for anything for earthly riches (in the name of god).

  • Well I very much doubt the Stranglers would ever write about that !

It's the song I think is brilliant, the lyrics are just a sideshow so I've never paid much attention to them. They were notorious for their lyrics having sexual innuendo, or in many cases far more blatant than that (listen to "Bring On The Nubiles", one of my uploads). So in this case you have "or a daughter" and "wine and women", very subtle by their standards.

So you've got hold of the wrong end of the stick I'm afraid...

  • WHY wouldn't they "ever" write about that? They had excellent lyrics. How many groups have good music AND lyrics? Bring On The Nubiles is one of their many songs. I've got ALL their fuckin' albums, as well as pirate tapes, vinyls'etc. I've followed them since they started (we're the same age). Listen to the godamn text.

  • Well all right I could be wrong, you could spend an eternity deciphering Stranglers lyrics !

I've never paid their lyrics much attention (apart from "Bring On The Nubiles !), it's their fantastic music I've thoroughly enjoyed.

I've still got my vinyl edition of Rattus Norvegicus, but it's a bit worse for wear...

  • @Seb30able Me too I do the same with Britney Spears.

  • That would be a waste of time. Wank less, maybe?

  • from the 1st moment I heard this song my take on the lyrics was exactly the same as yours, Seb30able. And this album still astounds me in every way.

  • bass tabs @ 911 tabs

  • does anyone know where to find tabs for this song? i have to learn that bassline!!! it is so damn good!!

  • No idea I'm afraid, maybe some other "reader" can be more helpful. You could always just play about to try and get it !

I can't play any musical instruments, I've always just preferred listening. But with the exception of the bass guitar and JJ Burnel's basslines ! but I've always come to the conclusion that (apart from the fact I dion't have a bass guitar !) I'd be hopeless.

  • I think this song is about trees. The Stranglers wrote a hell of a lot about trees they were obsessed with them

  • Interesting concept. They did that song about Sweden; there's lots of trees in Sweden.

  • NO. It's about the "discovery" of the "new world" (The Americas).

  • great use of the early synth

  • massive bass boner

  • It's a song about Hell's Angels.

  • the best song the stranglers ever made!!!

  • does anyone know what this song is about?

  • I've no idea, but it's got about the best bassline ever done.

  • yeah!...

    cool song

  • Nice 'n' sleazy

Does it does it does it every time ...

    Yeah! Coool song!

I like the Stranglers from the beginning, primarily their first 3 albums.

  • This song fucking kicks asses!!!

  • Well, that's one way of putting it !

  • cheers for this roddy one of my favourites...

fuckin great and awesome lyrics too.. NICE AND SLEAZY.

  • My pleasure.

I like the way that the clip of them on stage playing this song with all those strippers keeps getting "pulled" by YouTube, only to be immediately uploaded by someone else !

  • I just love the way the bass takes over from the lead in this - not often that happens !

  • From the Stranglers Black and White. A collection of songs that exudes bleak war torn imagery and references the cold war to great effect. (U2 and Joy Division went on to create dark music with war torn overtones but the Stranglers did it first). The production sought to capture death and destruction with a stark sneer of cold command and entrenched paranoia that existed in the late 1970's. A true masterpiece - never bettered.

  • Is that you in the picture Roddy!? Cool song, sick bass! Not as great ELP tho!!! haha!

  • No, of course it's not me, it's Hugh Cornwell that I lifted off the cover of the album. What I was meaning is that is what I look like after listening to an ELP album !!

  • Yeah I got that impression! Plus I read the description after I made the comment!

  • Best photo of you I've ever seen

  • This is awful...

And if you disagree, dont bother replying to say so.

  • If you say so my son...but don't you like the photo ?!

  • If it's so awful, why have you put it in your favourites ?!

  • To give me an excuse to exterminate some of them.

  • Oh dear, that's a bit drastic isn't it ?!

  • where are the strippers, that version gets more hits!!!

  • Good point ! And it's a classic clip.

    However:

    1. I don't have the clip.

    2. The audio is pretty awful.

    3. YouTube keep pulling the "offensive" clip.

Although someone else just reuploads it - this happens constantly, it's like an arms race !!

  • best song of them..."das ist der Rhytmus wo ich mit muss"^^

  • Do you like the photo ?!

  • oh I just notice it now...you look a bit depressed or you wonder about your big feet^^

  • No - I've just listened to an Emerson, Lake and Palmer record...
