  • Usually no as most motherboards in laptops have multi layer tracks. And also not a good idea as you will never get the strength back of the fibreglass board with glue.

on a few occasions i have created a bridge (Etched) pcb which is drilled and soldered on top or bottom of the broken motherboard. If the Motherboard has clean breaks and you can get to the contacts then the easiest way would be to fit a dc socket with a screw nut. Crazy glue is just as it sounds..... Crazy....

  • what if the piece of motherboard that the power jack sits on cracks off, can i just crazy clue it back to the main motherboard and resolder?

  • Good everything being professional keep it up A+++++++++++++

  • cool

  • So I tried this on an old laptop I have. It's a "no name" but the solder did not melt, the part gets hot but thats it. I am using a 25W and a 30W Soldering iron from Radio Shaq. Does anyone know why? Do I need more wattage?

  • OK First of all it is not likely to be the wattage of your soldering iron. 15 Watt is ample to cope with this job.. What is happening is due to a problem with your iron distributing heat to the solder. This could because of several reasons i will list: An electric current still on your board due to capacitors or if you have charger plugged. in The other is the material has changed due to oxidisation etc and will deflect the heat and there is always a possibility that your iron is faulty

  • Solution: Unplug any charger, Discharge any large capacitors by shorting them (Be careful you can get a nasty shock on some large capacitors. Apply Flux to the solder joint. it it is really stubborn then also apply new fresh solder this will change the consistency and lower the melting point of the solder as old and new blends (Its mainly an oxygen and corrosion issue) If your having to spend more than 5-6 seconds on a joint to melt the solder then DONT CONTINUE....

  • Check that your soldering iron will melt fresh solder easily. Also what i should have said first which i thought was obvious! Sorry!! Make sure the Tip of the soldering iron is clean and you can see the metal (Copper or Tin etc) Flux the iron and tin the tip with solder (You may need to file ore sand down the tip slightly) Soot or debris on the tip will make it fail 100%. Always use Flux (You can get this cheep at plumber shops etc (Doesn't really matter what type)

  • I am about to make a really detailed Video and will place it on my website for people to download and watch. It will also be available in the New Video. • u need close ups cant see s_hit of what u doing

  • toshiba has the best dc jack not soldiered just conected to the board with connector all u do is remove old and connect new it takes 5 sec

  • @jeka100 correction... apple makes the best dc jacks... they are flat and magnetic... no abuse is ever done to them - meaning no replacement is ever needed :)

  • We have just started a New Forum and Group at the website truestate. org. to assist with Laptop faults and Repairs. Its all free and Everyone is welcome to Join. We have loads of other features like Classifieds, Jobs, Games and much more, Best of all Its All Free.

  • with solder wik it works best if you brush some liquid flux onto it before using it.

  • Absolutely, But Even better.... always leave a lead trail in the braid (the finer point of the upper trace of solder before the braid opens) Chop it there and the desoldering will be easier and just dip the tip in Flux. Too much flux will not only make a mess but will make it harder to desolder.

  • Yeah i know he was, Sometimes i just use PVC Glue its cheaper,

Superglue is just so darn expensive. ;-)

  • could i send my laptop to you for repair?

how much would i be looking at if you do repairs?

    thanks

  • why solder it when you can use super glue???

  • @elbertivory2006

You MORON You cant Use Superglue

  • @colincarlsen - Colin, I think Elbert was pullin' yur' leg.

    I'd use duct tape.

  • For those in the US drop me a private message, I do this same professionally as well and I worked the Toshiba laptop depot for over a year besides having electronics repair skills over 40 yrs and military electronics repairs and training for 20. Colin is very good in this video, he knows what he's doing but postage to the UK for US residents (not to mention possible customs problems) would make it expensive to send to Colin.

  • What is the best de-soldering wick/braid to use with boards? I'm hearing mixed reviews about the one radio shack has. Either it's really effective or completely useless. O.o I tried using a bulb, but the space is so confined, that sucking it up is really tedious and ineffective. Not to mention the pins are oddly soldered by the OEM.

  • Radio Shack briad works fine although I use Solder-Wik only because I bought a case lot at an uaction years ago. The biggest trick is to have a nice sharp point on the iron and not burn the board or copper traces, and not be rough with it.

  • More info at powerjack . Com (No Spaces)

  • powerjackrepair . com (No Spaces)

  • PS. Sorry forgot to mention that on postage jobs i charge £20 on top to cover this.

I prefer Drop off as it is much cheaper and i can afford to do a proper free diagnostics

  • I accept postal and drop off jobs £68 Labour and parts, nothing hidden and extra bonuses like Photo CD of the Repair, Repaste of Heatsink with Arctic Silver 5 (The best), Deep Clean and Final Polish. Your machine will look near new. Sorry about that Plugg ;-)

Happy Christmas Everyone and a Great New Year

Don't let this Credit Crunch get you and come to me but dont ask for Credit lol

  • Please be aware that if it is the powerjack most engineers in shops wont want to repair this problem and blame it on the Motherboard and insisting that it needs replacing. In some cases yes it is correct but in most cases a good repair is easyly achived. They make a lot of proffit in selling you the board. A replacement board takes max 20 Minutes wheras a Repair may take upto 90 Minutes. If you get stuck and in UK i can do the repair for you with 6 Month Warranty.

  • my laptop is under repair, may have to get a new one

  • Sorry left you a comment reply in the Main Comment Page..

  • Sorry Luke I forgot that YouTube only allows 500 Characters per message...

    Hi Luke...

    ....The Blue Screen...

    ...If you know someone...

  • Hi Luke, At 13 we can do everything ;-) LOL

What you can possibly get away with is to use a "docking station" or "replicator" The Dell uses the same port on most of them so shouldnt be difficult to find a compatable one.

  • hi im only 13, and i have a dell inspiron 1200 ive just finished fixing the blue screen of death but i have a problem with the power jack my screen keeps flickering and i have to bend the plug up and down to make it work i cant get hold of a soldering iron though is there any other way i could do this maybe without a soldering iron im pretty good with computers and know what im doing

  • ....The Blue Screen has probably occured due to the Power Jack Issue and i wouldnt worry about that too much. Though i would advice in all not to use the faulty socket on your laptop as it will only get worse for sure.

Check by this methode; Remove the Battery, Try to Switch on then move the jack around and within a seconds you will understand the problem (The battery when inserted helps confuse the issue)

  • the solder in my would not melt

  • ...If you know someone that can do soldering and compitent at diss-assembly / re-assembly then you should go down that route. There is no other way really unless you use the above or are able to charge your battery/s in an alternitive way.

    Hope this helps.

    Colin

  • perfect!

  • Hey colincarlsen, nice vid, well i was wondering if you could give me your opinion as of what you think is wrong, I have a sony vgn-tz150n/b . And what happened was that it was loading windows vista and it froze, so i hit the power button and nothing would happen, so i unplugged it and disconnected the battery. And now it won't turn'back on.

Just wondering what would you think might be wrong thanks

  • I suck at soldering ;)

I'll visit the audio shop first, he's a good solderer (is that the right word:P )

If that doesn't work ill probably strip it :(

too bad, it's a nice laptop, 12,1inch with 1280*800 reso and doesn't weigh a thing.

    Thx for the replys!

  • Don;t know the history, got it for free from a friend of mine (has a computerstore but the customer bought a new laptop and didn't want the old one anymore (doh!)

The charger isn't broken, I've tried another as well, no result.

If the circuitry is faulte, there's no way i can fix it :P

    Thx for the quick reply!

  • If you are handy with a Soldering Iron and OK Stripping the laptop, Say even just for parts etc. It would be worth having a go at changing the Jack. You can pick them up for between £4-£8, Not sure how much they are in Holland but i can supply one if you need.

  • good vid :)

I have a question, i have a ND95264. It's not powering up anymore, the pwer-led flickers once when i plug in the adaptor, does this mean my power-jack is broken?

    Thx in advance :)

    Greetings from the Netherlands

  • Hi there, Thanks For your Remark.

That is not nesseserly true, Your Charger may be faulty or even the motherboard charging circuitry may be faulty. Please tell me a little more about the history of the problem before it failed ?

  • I keep taking things for granted but i realise that there is a need for a Soldering Tutorial. I might do a really indepth long version with loads of info from Micro soldering to Plumbing Central Heating. What do you think Guys ?? If enough give me a nudge i will do it and for anyone that did so will get it Cheap or Free.

  • You could also use the board if it is dead as a Soldering Practice board.

XPS Rocks, got my one a few weeks ago £2400,

First thing i did was stand on it (Was promised it would take 100Kg i am 80 and had witnesses) The same day i Stripped it to the bone, removed the Crapp DC Socket and Soldered on a good one and re inforced the tracks arround the Jack. Some say i am crazzzzyee but thats the way you learn.

Where are you based ? I am in London, if your local maybe i can take a look at the board.

  • thanks for the reply "northampton" i have to agree i do like the xps. and i would say good idea. i paid £80 should get it back tomoz as the machine cost so much i did not want to gamble on the xps my self. but the one that broke i was unsure if the board was gone before. it was only a acer 3160. so ill just sel it as spares..... plus i could have done with better soldering tip as mine was not very small but we learn :)

  • Hope all goes well. Don't forget to ask the guy that repaired your XPS for a Warranty, 6 Months is fair for a decent repair. You should also get the removed Socket back otherwise you wont know if they just put a little solder back on (not good for a long lasting repair) £80 is a fair price. Please keep me updated how it goes. If yu get stuck then you know where i am. ;-)

  • thanks... yer the old jack hole/cable movement is lose... i think i only get 30days. on there site says. and they did say about it had come lose.... also dell would have done a mobo replacement for over £200 with only 90 days.... this laptop has had 2 new mobo in under 2 years this would have been 3rd i told them to get lost

thanks for the warning tho you can never be to carefull....

  • LOL it pleases me to know that I have a better warranty policy than Dell does.

Mind you I wouldn't fancy the time waiting to get a replacement board to any Laptop company and I am disappointed more and more nowadays in Dell service. Products Good but service seams Crap since the Indian relocation of its sales and support.

  • Not being racist or techno-ist etc but India is not quite ripe just yet in the front line understanding of computer tech and English, maybe just only just in the Phone technology (and how many have a line ! ?)

It all goes back to cheap labour use and abuse and sweatshops and who in a perfect world wants that.

Give the People what they want, right here, right now and don't sell out is what I say.

  • yes and the fact of the waste. hole new mother board when they should just solder new one on.... dell is bad really when they cant do simple things i would have been able to do it with the right tools plus not risk i wanted to take on laptop that costs so much....

but i could have still done it my self and then brought a mobo for cheaper with longer warranty than dell

  • Hmmm... I remember the days when Dell was Small and Perfect with Everything Fully Loaded And Boy where they. Without accusations, many and too many of the so called powerjack problems seam and are engineered by the producers of the motherboards to power fail. I get about 2 out of 10 that are genuine wear and tear or accidents and 8 out of 10 have weak pads, joints, solder and tracks.

  • yer i ried to tell them this over the fone and he said no he worked that for years and it was not a comon problem an all the ppl on the internt lie lol.... and i can always send you there web site if all turns out ok. i dunno how good they are but there site aint nothing special i have made better years ago when i was into that, for game clans. just tend to fix friends and familys for free... what will change but thats another story

  • Sorry forgot to mention,

If the repair shop is good i would love to link up and share Links and work.

  • I have to stop here but check out money spent on design of boards, research and it may become obvious where most of the money is spent making people buy more. And Now a few Beers. Lol. Anyway I get a lot of work making a better job of the big boys downfall.

  • I am sorry to hear that. It is probably over heating. But dont forget to switch (Swap) the Ram over. (You never know) That happened to me a few times. If the Computer is yours and you have, or someone else broken it, you will still have parts you can sell on, You probably make more stripping and selling parts.

  • nope did not work never mind worth a try it was broke by a younge kid running into it and snapping it so maybe it was it was broke from that or maybe i did it. either dont think i want to try it on my xps as it was £1600. thanks for all the help

  • thanks i can build and fix computers never done the solder or that type well only on some speaker crossovers i made. i will see soon weather it works by cheacking and then soldering on. just hope there was no black thing that fell off

  • I know you seam to know what you are doing but i must stress that you are careful not to leave any conductive objects including solder etc under your motherboard as you power it up.

check for any stray solder drops on and near the repair. And Good Luck.

  • Good Job ;-)

(Solder with plenty of flux, some boards are sandwiched (Layered))

Connect CPU with heatsink (Dont forget to Power the Fan), Ram, Bios Battery if unpluged and LCD straight to the Motherboard and plug in the Charger (Make sure that you know the charger works first) you should see some lights come on if not then it could be because of the battery but not to worry switch on with power button. you will soon know if it works. If that fails then try switching the Ram arround.

  • i finaly got the holes it it fits now. goto solder it on still... is there away i could then check if it does power before putting it all back together again. i dunno if u plug it will show me some how

  • The black thing that fell of may be part of your Lid Switch, that is sometimes next to the DC Socket. If you dont mind it not switching off when you close the lid then thats ok to leave it off. You may do better with a smaller Iron, Hope it goes Well

  • thanks i will try that again... also i think not 100% sure that one the very small black things might have fell off not sure or what they are. e.g they are soldered 1 and 2 on other side. my soldering iron is not a nice thin point so hard to get the holes clean

  • You will probably be ok as most boards can take a bit of heat but if your worried then dampen a cloth slightly so you can dab the hot area cooling it down. Hope all this Helps.

    All the Best

    Colin

  • looks easier than it is i cant get the solder out of the holes there that small and has 5 of them im sure it aint going to work for sure now must done something bad 2 it

  • Hi Larksp,

    Some tips:

Use De Solder Braid and Flux.

If you find that you have very little solder on the board (Pads) and can't clear holes then Apply some Fresh Solder with flux to each troublesome hole. Try to soak up the solder(de solder) from both sides of the motherboard. You will succede. It helps if you have a hands free magnifying glas. Dont try to skip the de soldering as you will get stuck (Especially with the 5 Pin type)...

  • Many thanks for this video it seems perfect!!

    Nice tatoo's also ;)

I'm trying this very soon on my acer 1300.

  • Great Video for Newbees and those that want to take on this repair themselves
