One would expect that he'd have known this, at the time, recent alteration in the rules, considering that he was the particular one who always tempted them, seemingly next-to-carelessly. Then again, maybe he didn't realize this at that particular point in time.
Or, maybe he wasn't expecting a penalty against based on his verbiage to that umpire, and/or didn't care about it enough at that particular point in time.
No, if you're a line judge you're supposed to just do your job, like a machine, like the eye hawk. You're not there to make things a personal matter. That's reserved for players, and they should be allowed, because they play for millions, glory, ranking points, and all the fans. At best a line judge could have a little sense of humor and diffuse the situation. But for that you have to be able to detach from your ego and be a little sensible than a beast.
Are you seriously talking shit about the greatest nation in the world? Low culture are we? Just what i would expect from an AMERICAN. Most of you are fine but you crossed the line buddy!
yeah i agree with ya. Go backtoscholldummy crossed the line. I love australia and think a comment like that has to come from a really uneducated dude.
haha. ive seen him talk about this in his later years. it used to be something like warning, point, game, match, but they changed it to warning, point, match.
I remember this scene. In all honesty, defaulting a tennis player for his verbal abuse is a harsh punishment although Mac surely deserved some lesson. But, if someone says "Go f--- you mother", I would do things beyond defaulting his player eligibility.
He said f*ck and Mother in one sentence. Then there were two further bleeps. The umpire looked like a little nerd and decided to show whose boss. Ridiculous over reaction.
That's exactly my point - people are never satisfied with what they have. In about 15 years, we went from "gosh these are such brats, they don't deserve to be there!" to "gee now I miss the brats"...it's pathetic, how we always look for this perfect medium.
This is the stupid thing about tennis fans. Before it was "these players are such assholes!" Now it's "where are the assholes of old! It's so boring now!" What a testament to tennis fans worldwide, congratulations.
Ah McEnroe was great. Not only was he a superb serve-volleyer but it was ALWAYS fun to watch him. Although I think he's great, I fall asleep watching Federer..
I'm not sure that he ever really gave much thought to the rules, although they applied to him just as much to any other player. It's surprising he hadn't been defaulted before then. He was a bit of has-been by that stage, but it's nice to know that he got his comeuppance in the end...
