  • "do not watch" remember that youtubers, we all can produce too.

  • @1nqual Those sound more like suggestions than truths.

  • @1nqual Personal experience isn't fact? It is fact for at least one. Why would you sift through his personal experiences to find something that suits your own? Hopefully you find that truth you're looking for.

  • LOL!!! I too owned a '75 Ford Granada. I know what he's talking about.

  • isnt learning from others who think independently and as freethinkers also following as well? this sounds like bs.

  • @Xziz10ths This ain't gospel. It's for you to figure out.

  • @Xziz10ths

    No.

The implications of the act of "learning" suggests that you are actively participating in examining, criticizing, and appropriately implementing a meme that is both practical and wholesome.

The Act of following on the other hand suggests blind loyalty, and regimented obedience to strain of thought that goes without any examination.

Indoctrination, allegiance, taboos and Ideological purity leads to following.

Consensus, answers, curiosity, and evolution are learning.

  • @Xziz10ths As Schopenhauer and Stirner said, learning from others is not about becoming *bound* to their ideas, but rather using their ideas as ladders which you throw away once they've served their purpose. If you carry them with you, they will be a burden and you'll go nowhere.

  • @Xziz10ths If I'm struggling to find a solution to an issue and a friend says "hey, this might be a better solution", that is not a commandment that you must follow his directive. You compare his advice to your own solution and make the decision yourself as to whether to follow it in its entirety, or whether to adapt parts of it, or discard it altogether. If one mindlessly follows his every word, then the entire point of what he is trying to teach has obviously been lost on that person.

  • @Xziz10ths Learning is not following.

  • @Xziz10ths There's a such thing as listening to experts. It doesn't mean you're selling out, maaaannn

  • @Xziz10ths

There is a distinct difference between learning from others views and following blindly...

  • @Xziz10ths The idea is to learn from and evaluate the concepts that other 'independent' and 'free' thinkers come up with, then move beyond them. Any idea obtained through progressive, open-minded enlightenment can be turned into dogma. It's up to the individual to recognize that no idea deserves to be dogma (except maybe for the idea that no idea deserves to be dogma!!).

  • @shantih433

you realize that is more contradictory and difficult to grasp......especially those whose have already decided what 'dogma' they want to follow. I.E.: Buddhism, Judo-Christianity, Roman Catholicism, Islam, Scientology, pantheonism...ect. It would require bloodshed. thats all i have to say to that. Besides most of these things are dangerous and pay debt(money) to a tyrannical system that doesnt know how to stop. you talk about it to them and they stare. the religous are dead inside.

  • @Xziz10ths its called opening your mind a little.

  • another great paradox from Terence

  • the ONE person who disliked this probably was made very uncomfortable by what they were hearing.

  • Very important talk...one of my favorites. Thanks for posting...

  • "Do not follow" Truer words were never spoken. Followers are maintaining the stagnant pool that those in power enjoy watching us writhe around in. They take advantage of the fact that most people will blindly do what everyone else is doing. The only thing giving me hope for humanity is that occasionally I meet someone with the ability to think independently.

  • 5 stars

  • Way, way, way ahead of his time.

  • It comes from one of his speeches done in the 90's. I have over 60 recordings by Terence, and I've used this in a video.

The 'Podcast' was taken from one of these recordings.

  • Finally, some McKenna that I can agree with. Buy used!

  • The answer to the question of what should be done ?

    this question answers itself

    question everything and hold nothing

    true progression

  • Terence McKenna is probably my favorite speaker out of all the.... "intelligently logical conduits of truth" for lack of a better description.

  • i love Terence, just downloaded hours of his speeches from Isohunt, listening to him everynight, our inspiration and guiding light lives on

  • LOL

  • 5 stars.

  • Terrence isn't all dead, his words will live on to inspire thousands. I don't think his ideas will become outdated or irrelevant any time soon.

  • Live by what you don't know.

  • Well for one thing, in a capitalist system you have to adhere to the principles of said society in order to function and no he is not anti capitalist although it wouldn't really matter if he was anyways because he lives in a world that depends on capitalism... at the moment.

I have found everything terence says to be very interesting exept it always pains me when i see a brilliant mind refute marxism, speaking of, marx was not anti capitalist either and knew it was a neccassary stage in history

  • The current consumption style is a universal experiment to see what can be made and how what is made evolves. Its definitely gonna change.

  • Hmmm, I like McKenna but I have to call him up on this one. Was he giving away his books and doing free lectures? If not then he is being quite hypocritical towards the 'consumers' of his 'products'.

  • first of all hes not against capitalism... .

second , its not like hes a corporation, he needs to make money too..

  • He's said before that he's not anti-capitalist. He's saying materialism and object fetishes are harmful to society. He makes his money through expressing ideas and creative thinking, where other people's lives revolve around autonomous deadbeat jobs and other jobs that are just meant to keep the system running.

  • his ideas are greater than his greed, if that's what you're asking.

and hopefully, the "consumers" wisdom is greater than their vanity, so the'll be no problem.

  • also, now that i think of it, his lectures are all free on the internet, or to download without threat of reprecussion. don't know about his books, i think their still going for money.

he also said that he highly encouraged bootlegging and passing things around. he made enough money as was, and enough to fund a his nonprofit botanical dimensions. it's not nike

  • I see what you're saying. I think he was just making a call to make an effort to consume less. We could go back to living like indians, which would be wonderful in many ways, but if you don't get everyone to convert with you, you'd be perceived as a bum. Ignorant people wouldn't be able to see past their materialism and wouldn't understand.

  • " everyone to convert with you " You mean.... FOLLOW.

I haven't thouroghly looked through mckennas ideas but it seems inconsistent at times, but i know see thats irrelevant because he is helping people put things in perspective or ' another perspective ' while still trying to remind people that not his nor anyone elses word is gold and always has room for x

  • beautiful picture at 2:42

  • So basically we have to stop watching tele throw away our computers and rediscover nature. and our neighbours.

  • I think computers are fine.

  • Terence was very tuned into computers, and yes, I agree...the information is invaluable.

  • i miss this consciousness in this realm

  • i miss u

  • Thank you!

  • Thanks so much for this upload. I haven't heard this lectuer before.

    *follows link to full talk*

    Thank you!

    ;D

  • ha cool man i just watch videos on yor channel, his last interview, n now your here too cept 2months ago, but for me it is now and when you watched it it wasthe now- peace man

  • I like this one especilly. I like also at the end how he said dont watch cuz ur not at the center of things.

  • Great upload. Where is this from?

  • The lecture is titled "Vertigo at History's Edge" and was recorded at the Open Center in NYC in April of 1994. See the link(podcast) in the info section.

  • what does mcluhan mean when he coined the phrase ' the medium is the message'?? your reply would surely help my understanding.

  • Simply put, that form(the medium) is more important than the content in terms of how society is affected. The content mainly serves to strengthen and validate the ways the medium itself structures our senses, values, societies etc. Check out the clip "Terence McKenna on McLuhan" or "Riding Range with Marshall McLuhan"(seven parts, I think) for McKenna's take on it.

  • the answer to the question he ask what should be done? the answers is the question the act of questioning the act of obtaining then the act of self expression to what was obtained by questioning repeat this process until the question reaches the point of true form the problem is not that we don't have answers to questions its the answers were trying to answer the questions with are in fact in question maybe i'm a kook my 2 cents oh and this guy terence is cool i like the way he thinks
  • heya,

anybody knows what the last negative, that is never said in this cut, is?

i would love to know. and thank you.

  • As far as I can recall he somewhat jokingly says it's "do not procreate". I'll have to check the audio tracks to be sure, though. If someone else could confirm...?

  • oh, "do not procreate"?? that has something to do with the overpopulation, as i know him and can guess, eh?

    -- or?

if you could check the audio, that would be grand. i mean, if that wouldn´t bother you that much or something... i don ´t know why, but it seems to me so important!!! for what reason - i don´t know!!

no but really - that would be lovely to know.

    THANKS, SilverBuddha.

  • No bother:) Watch this space.

  • Check out the video response for the answer to your question. Do it!

  • ...oh, so he actually forgot to mention it as he didn´t really give it it´s worth... haha! :)) but it´s a good one. i like it.

    thanks for the upload, really!:)

and then, also, you see, i am not a dog to be given commands to. your "Do it!", i mean - ? are you kidding?? i would check it sooner or later. why to be so unnecessarily fucking harsh?

  • Am I kidding? Yes, in fact I am. The command was not meant to be taken literally. It was merely a play on words, cf. the title(and content) of the video we are commenting on. Guess it didn't really come across the way I intended. I apologize.

  • well!!:) this is bloody writing, you know! without the facial expressions and body language, see? so how could i possibly know?

that is what the emotion-icons ARE FOR, man. Use it!

    ;))

    Terence´s add 6:

do not listen to other people´s commands.

    :))

    apology accepted though.

  • "buy shit thats already made" hahah cant agree more

  • as a BO-DY he has a special pronunciation of that word body... I like listening to him, he has a lot of good ideas.... and the fact that he has become a part of my experience as I am discovering so much about the world right now.. that would allow him to become one of the people I choose to listen to. As for his 'summarised' points... well I think, his idea of following... that is until you have a rational objective view of what you are following, 'don't BLINDLY follow' would be better I feel...

  • 1. Do not believe.

Ideology has poisoned this planet. It is beneath your dignity. Fight your way free from belief.

    2. Do not follow.

Following is a tasteless position to find yourself in.

    3. Do not consume.

The fetish for objects made of matter is wrecking the planet. None of this stuff brings happiness anyway.

    4. Do not watch.

Watching is an incredibly disempowering thing. Watchers participate not at all in society. They are the morons who are keeping this system running.

  • why must you give such unwanted negative opinions, if you dont like just go away.

    peace

  • Why are you telling this guy to fuck off? He simply summarized Terrence's points and you tell him to fuck off... I don't get it

  • I was just followin the guy before me, to tell you the truth. I think I misread 1 as I...Though its a rather inane comment regardless.

You cant just take this terence at his word, hes as full of shit as the rest of us. So you could take the fuck off as a warnin against credulity.

Also Ive been questioning if its even possible to have an original thought or free will in light of the fact that were just the big bang bangin away. Its quite the brain teaser...

  • @pguitarb I was wondering that myself...

  • @mos619 Terran OP.

  • 5. Do not call others morons or sheep.

  • @edyersh So where's the argument?

  • @JerseyFinch It's within the content of this video.

  • @edyersh Thank you, coupling an all at once summary with the video is very helpful. :) Love #4

  • Isn't he just wonderfull? I could listen to him speak for hours and hours I don't know if you can get bored of him

    peace

  • He is full of wonder indeed.
