Well the reason both parties are blending together is because they are both becoming more and more statist. If the Republican party really wanted smaller government they would remove drug laws , the DEA , and their other constrictions on social liberties

OR we could replace our good ol' Republican friends with the Libertarians and the Democrats would then turn into a Keynesian/Socialist party then a third party would probably form to group the people who hate freedom even more

For the GOP to come back in 2010 and 2012 They have to be able to win Non red districts, they have to get moderate social issue canidates, to win in NY, Conn, N.H, If they do not realize they will be a Southern party.

I respectfully disagree that the Republican party needs to move left on social issues. Polling now indicates that a majority of Americans are now pro-life, a number that continues to be on the rise. Additionally, even Californians don't want gay marriage in their state. The two fastest growing demographics in this countries, blacks and hispanics, are also socially conservative. I think that the day the GOP abandons social conservatism is the day it loses its entire base.

I am talking about Gay marriage, Young voters will also be the future voters, i am a young voter and don;t care about that. If you look at those two fastest growing demographics Obama killed Mccain among them. if you put this election in the 2020 demographics, Obama wins by 14 points. Conversly if you put the 1980 election in todays demographics Reagan only wins by 3 points, He won by 10 in 1980.

Okay, but the fact that McCain didn't do well with blacks and hispanics has nothing to do with social issues... They favor an increase in the size and scope of the federal government. The social issues is one of the only thing that ties them to the GOP. Based on your comments about shifting demographics, it seems that the GOP should become more liberal on the fiscal issues if they wish to get elected.

GOP are caught in a catch 22. If they cater to their base and become more conservative, then they only please 20% of US. But if they become more liberal, they may lose their base, in which case there will be no grassroots effort to win over moderates. Over next 20 yrs GOP are going to be forced to secure a new base. I wouldn't be too surprised if Obama fails and they pull out another win in 2012, but I'm guessing they'd never win again after that - at least not on the same tired platform.

U make alot of noise about something that happens from time to time in democracies: A party is losing an election. We heard all the same stuff about the democrats in 2004 (and i didnt believe it then either), how it was the end of the democrats and republican hegemony has emerged and then they took congress in 2006. Obamas Victory was very thin in a lot of states and without W being the boogieman he will have a hard fight next time. Just stop being hysterical and dont overanalyze these things.

Steyn and Hannity are exactly correct. The last thing Republicans need to do is move farther to the center. All that's going to be required is to stand strong on conservative principles and when the inevitable catastrophic consequences of Obama's marxist/socialist policies stagger America, the republicans, led by strong core conservatism ie, less government, less taxes, restored individual liberty, will landslide these anti-constitutionalist heretics out on their behinds.

Sean Hannity has gone into overdrive. I feel sorry for Alan Colmes, his party win the election so he looses his job. Shame really because at least he restrained Hannity a bit. My problem with Colin Powell is not that he has a differing view. My problem with him is that he is disingenuous.

Powell voted for Barack Obama. He wants us to believe that if Rush Limbaugh wasnt so mean, the Republicans would get more votes. Someone should ask Powell, General, if Rush Limbaugh was not on the radio, would you have voted for McCain instead of Barack Obama? Of course, the answer is no.
