When I first saw a clip of Toby Stephens playing Rochester, I sort of objected, because Bronte describes Rochester as very compact, athletic, and dark-complected (well, for an Englishman) - Celine Varens even called him a gnome. Toby is pretty fair, quite tall, and not especially athletic-looking. HOWEVER he is a brilliant actor, and having seen several versions, his Edward Rochester is the one I now picture while reading the book. Thanks be to Toby for bringing my literary love to life!
@quiltcocoon I also picture Toby when reading the book. "He had great, dark eyes, and very fine eyes, too - not without a certain change in their very eyes change depths sometimes, which, if it was not softness, reminded you at least of that feeling."
Hmmm...can't decide if I like Toby Stephens' or Michael Fassbender's interpretation of Rochester more....I'm leaning towards Fassbender at this point, but I'll let Toby convince me more :D
No family, no friends. I find myself in that position as well, on the cusp of turning 37. Unfortunately, when I was Jane's age I could never have predicted how awful the majority of people would be. Perhaps she made out better because she learned as a child. Then again, she's a work of fiction. It is wonderful what these great books teach us no matter what our life circumstance: something different every time. They offer suggestions for attempting to fix catastrophic life failure as well.
@tarynrose1000 But this isn't the book - it's a TV adaptation which exploits all the VISUAL advantages of film. The screenwriter was Sandy Welch who has as good an understanding of the essence of Jane Eyre than any I've encountered.
We girls might want a man like Mr.Rochester, but they just don't make men like that any more. It is simply another century, and humans are formed by the century they live in. Our conception of the world, society and morality is completely different.
Umm what happened to Bessie? At first we are shown she and Bessie may not have gotten along BUT after Jane said what she did before going to Lowood and then when they met up again they talked about old times etc, even though they did part company I thought they would of remained FRIENDS regardless of the two different paths they now led.
I love the fact that she looks simply amazing without make up. Many girls in England literally just pour tons of make-up on their faces... and most people find that normal. Shame we have lost the essence of real beauty!
Toby Stephens is just perfect for Rochester! I love how he doesn't just play him as the Byronic Hero, but he also plays him as a very playful man and his chemistry with Ruth is so believable. I love how they're always teasing each other!
@ciastecko people find him cute because he is trying to hide how intriguing he finds Jane and unusual. You can imagine that he finds it annoying to find a mere governess interesting at all. He tries to figure her out so he can figure out why he finds her so interesting.
I think this Rochester brilliantly portrays how he is interested in her from the moment he meets her, always testing her out, getting to know her, having a bit of fun with her, at the same time trying to reform for her, all the time just wanting her - love it!:-)
@lillypadpearl The second dress was the one she weared at a wedding, this of Mrs' Temple, her teacher at Lowood (the brunnete lady that found her with dead Helen). It supposed to be a dress made out of saten, so for Jane's stylistical habits it was way too "formal".
The way Rochester talks all rough and imperious just shows how fond he is of Jane :-) Does anyone notice how he lowers his eyes and goes all shy when he demands her to play the piano? :-) Such details are hard to notice in the book and depend on the improvisation of the actor. Go Toby! :-))
I've just seen a few other movie versions and I see they took a tiny bit of liberty with the dialogue here. To the better, though! It's more comprehensible to modern audience but still very faithful to the original. Praise to the scriptwriter.
@trumpetbeth yeah, he's unbelievable:-) I've seen him in Twelfth Night as Orsino and I simply couldn't recognise him at first.... he really looks so much hotter as Mr Rochester
please, could someone tell me, what exactly Mrs Farifax says to Jane at 5:25 ? you know, when she says she hopes Jane won't go away because of Rochester's something ways. I'm making subtitles for this movie and I simply don't recognise that word... (English is not my mother tongue) so please, please could you advise me?
@Grencle "What did you think of Master?" ....."Yes, but he has..he has had disappointments in his life. I hope you will forgive his rough and ready ways. You will not leave. I've grown used to you. I hope he won't scare you away."
You know, like Edward (and I know some of you don't like hearing this but please be fair in just listening), Mr. Rochster is put in a position where he had been dead to love. Mr. R knew he couldn't marry again and Edward never knew he could love. They both awake when these two women come into their lives. Edward awakes to a love he shouldn't encourage and knows is wrong. R awakes to a love he shouldn't consider but goes after it anyway because he's won't help it.
@desouzatray Yes, seriously. You keep asking me that but I dimissed you as a Twilight hater but I'll answer you now. Edward Cullen is a moral being as is his family. They have fought to go against their own natures because of those morals. Edward had his "fling" but he couldn't stand himself so went back to his family. He wants Bella but he goes about it correctly. Not Rochester! He hits on a servant and almost gets her to the alter. His life is sad but he has no right to do what he does.
@TheFloatingBox You mean YOU don't care and that's your right but don't think you can speak(especially with that mature language of yours) for everyone. I don't think that, "everyone" would like you speaking for them but why don't you ask?
I get your point, I suppose...I don't think I'd appretiate someone voicing their opinion without stopping to think whether I agree with them or not...so I think you're right, actually. But I guess I'm just sick of seeing Twilight everywhere. Don't get me wrong, I actually quite like the books, just pisses me off when I see it compared to just about everything.
@TheFloatingBox Float, I'm glad you spoke so nicely to me in response. And I don't intermingle with whoever it is that you've gotten tired of listening to but I can understand it a bit. I'm pretty much done with them all. It's like anything else I've gotten into a frenzie over, one day I just am tired of it. And I'd bet those actors that do the movies are as tired! lol Take care. Songsmirth
Anyone has any idea what she is playing on that piano? I have heard it before and maybe even played it a long time ago. What is it?? A sonata I guess?
"Oh no no, you must change!" Into your other gray dress, he, he...
I love it how in the scene with Adele Rochester's intense studuying gaze never leaves her face, not even when he's bringing the glass to his lips and returning it on the table afterwards.
"I do not wish to pry, sir". ""I know... Jane" This little smile on his face and the fact he calls her Jane for the first time are priceless.
This scene shows, in a very nice way, how little 'family' mattered to Rochester senior. Young Edward must have been very alone in that pile of stones even before he went to university or met Bertha. And now here's a girl who, instead of tract and scripture, reads naturalist books, *his* books, and knows what's in them. He's thinking *Treasure*.
Actually, Jane was a pious Christian, at least according to the book. Not an overbearing, stuffy zealot, mind you, or a hypocrite. Just a Christian. And it helped explain why she stuck to her integrity instead of running off to the south of France with him. You're right. Jane is a well-rounded treasure, and I'm so glad it all worked out! :)
the book was much funnier... as when Rochester says "did you paint these with your own eyes?" "Yes sir" Those very eyes I see in your head at this moment?" "Yes sir"
@Elriaen I think the adjectives for ugly and attractive contemporary for Bronte's period were used broadly to describe manners and spirit as well as just appearance. Plus, what is handsome changes with the time period. I think his looks are appropriate, he is rough, but passionate. Fine in my book.
This is a lovely series, and very helpful, but I can't stop staring at her moustache!

Rochester is cool- he makes a great match for her.

the book was much funnier... as when Rochester says "did you paint these with your own eyes?" "Yes sir" Those very eyes I see in your head at this moment?" "Yes sir"

@FinalDaft13 She doesn't say he is outright ugly (until the end anyway) just that he isn't hansome.

@Elriaen I think the adjectives for ugly and attractive contemporary for Bronte's period were used broadly to describe manners and spirit as well as just appearance. Plus, what is handsome changes with the time period. I think his looks are appropriate, he is rough, but passionate. Fine in my book.

Mr. Rochester: (Annoyed)"NOT YOU PILOT."

@reemmas Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte Bronte, not Jane Austen., hence the reason why it is darker.
