  • This is a lovely series, and very helpful, but I can't stop staring at her moustache!

  • I Love Mr.Rochester =)

  • *awkward silence between nervous people who fancy each other*

    R: "...so anyway...TALK!!"

  • Chill bumps!

  • "oh mercy mercy mercy" - i like french

  • Also. Heh. 9:49.

  • When I first saw a clip of Toby Stephens playing Rochester, I sort of objected, because Bronte describes Rochester as very compact, athletic, and dark-complected (well, for an Englishman) - Celine Varens even called him a gnome. Toby is pretty fair, quite tall, and not especially athletic-looking. HOWEVER he is a brilliant actor, and having seen several versions, his Edward Rochester is the one I now picture while reading the book. Thanks be to Toby for bringing my literary love to life!

  • @quiltcocoon I also picture Toby when reading the book. "He had great, dark eyes, and very fine eyes, too - not without a certain change in their very eyes change depths sometimes, which, if it was not softness, reminded you at least of that feeling."

  • Hmmm...can't decide if I like Toby Stephens' or Michael Fassbender's interpretation of Rochester more....I'm leaning towards Fassbender at this point, but I'll let Toby convince me more :D

  • toby is too cool to play mr rochester

  • GOD! Toby Stephens is really handsome!

  • Ooo I like this Rochester..a bit more open and playful

  • No family, no friends. I find myself in that position as well, on the cusp of turning 37. Unfortunately, when I was Jane's age I could never have predicted how awful the majority of people would be. Perhaps she made out better because she learned as a child. Then again, she's a work of fiction. It is wonderful what these great books teach us no matter what our life circumstance: something different every time. They offer suggestions for attempting to fix catastrophic life failure as well.

  • @tarynrose1000 But this isn't the book - it's a TV adaptation which exploits all the VISUAL advantages of film. The screenwriter was Sandy Welch who has as good an understanding of the essence of Jane Eyre than any I've encountered.

  • We girls might want a man like Mr.Rochester, but they just don't make men like that any more. It is simply another century, and humans are formed by the century they live in. Our conception of the world, society and morality is completely different.

  • I tell ya... just GOTTA luv her hair! hhhahahahahahahahah

  • Umm what happened to Bessie? At first we are shown she and Bessie may not have gotten along BUT after Jane said what she did before going to Lowood and then when they met up again they talked about old times etc, even though they did part company I thought they would of remained FRIENDS regardless of the two different paths they now led.

  • Her eyebrows..... are bothersome....

  • at 1:17, he sounds a bit pissed.

  • I love the fact that she looks simply amazing without make up. Many girls in England literally just pour tons of make-up on their faces... and most people find that normal. Shame we have lost the essence of real beauty!

  • Toby Stephens is just perfect for Rochester! I love how he doesn't just play him as the Byronic Hero, but he also plays him as a very playful man and his chemistry with Ruth is so believable. I love how they're always teasing each other!

  • Man, I love this version

  • @barbbosa916 Oh yes! In some ways he totally reminds me of Snape, too :)

  • whats so cute in rochester?! i can't see it!

  • @ciastecko people find him cute because he is trying to hide how intriguing he finds Jane and unusual. You can imagine that he finds it annoying to find a mere governess interesting at all. He tries to figure her out so he can figure out why he finds her so interesting.

  • actually i adore toby's portrayal of rochester it's my favorite one so charismatic + he's cute

  • Line is got into. :(

  • I want him. For christmas maybe?

  • @warriorfightsforcake honey, we all want him for christmas...get in line...:D

  • Mr Heathcliff?? Pish posh!.... Mr Rochester all the way!! :)

  • You can't help but be charmed by Mr. Rochester... he just draws you in...

  • With all his rough manners... he is quite attractive... Love his voice, so alluring...

  • "...So, anyway, talk!" hahahaha that's cute.

  • Oh geez mr. Rochester is alluring and charming and his voice is so charismatic...-swoon- (x

  • Jane Eyre looks like Teri Hatcher =), doesn't she?

  • Okay Toby needs to divorce his wife...now...and marry me!

  • I love Rochester's expression when she starts playing the piano. He like, "Oh gosh, what is she playing?" haha

  • @BecomeMyNewCat

When I saw the movie for the first time, I though Adele was around my sisters age now, which is eleven or twelve (possibly thirteen)

  • Hmm... Jane sits amongst Rochester's treasures.

  • my foot hurts

    good night sir

    LMAO love that

  • hehe i love that song jane plays. so happy and light. rochester is all like, ughhh, happiness

  • Toby Stephens looks so much like both his parents. Sometimes I see his mother, sometimes his father.

  • @5:57 am I the only one who thinks Grace Poole sounded like a man?

  • @oXAtlantisXo she does!

  • *Jane plays happy tune*

    *Rochester looks pissed off*

    "Stop bursting my emo bubble!"

  • Mr. Rochester: "Sit."

    **Dog Sits**

    Mr. Rochester: (Annoyed)"NOT YOU PILOT."

    LOVE IT!! Haha

  • 6:30

    "Sit! - Not you, Pilot!"

Love it! Thank you, Sandy Welch or whoever came up with that little gem!

  • @HermioneNo1 Yes it is genius!

  • Adele looks just like Helen Burns in the 1973 version.

  • GAHHH *_*

Toby Stephens plays such a DELICIOUS Mr Rochester, no? ^_^

  • Sit! not you pilot!

    hahahahahaha...

  • I think this Rochester brilliantly portrays how he is interested in her from the moment he meets her, always testing her out, getting to know her, having a bit of fun with her, at the same time trying to reform for her, all the time just wanting her - love it!:-)

  • My foot hurts!

    Good night sir. LOL xD

  • jane looks better with her hair open

  • R & A ~ two goths who can communicate without speaking ~ they know exactly what the other is ~ even if they don't know it.

  • When I first started watching this version, I thought: He's the romantic lead?

But after Stevens says: "Miss Eyre, can we proceed?" I was hooked. Off like a shot now to buy the DVD.

  • "My foot hurts like the blazes."

    Grump. Irresistible grump.

  • ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! this episode is so nice.i enjoy it every part.

Miss Eyre is right.Master is jut so unchageable and why not difficult to understand.but i find it facinating, intrigued and i kinda like it.

cuz it makes the whole story powerful and sweeet!

  • ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! this episode is so nice.i enjoy it every part.

  • Mr. Rochester makes me go ga ga!! So dark and brooding and sexy! ;)

  • aw adele is cute."ah merci merci" *sees doll* "rambles in french" !! xD

  • Oh, her eyebrows distract me.

  • Toby Stephens is good in this

  • Mr. Rochester "and my foot hurts like the blazes"

Me "well maybe you shouldn't have had your horse going so fast over the speed limit. That's how accidents happen" :p

  • I dont get what the point of her changing was the dress she changed into look the same too hahahaha

  • @lillypadpearl The second dress was the one she weared at a wedding, this of Mrs' Temple, her teacher at Lowood (the brunnete lady that found her with dead Helen). It supposed to be a dress made out of saten, so for Jane's stylistical habits it was way too "formal".

  • @lillypadpearl make weared wore (I think) and saten to silk.

  • Rochester: 'Sit!'

    Pilot *does a canine squat*

    Rochester: 'Not you, Pilot!'

    LOL...

The way Rochester talks all rough and imperious just shows how fond he is of Jane :-) Does anyone notice how he lowers his eyes and goes all shy when he demands her to play the piano? :-) Such details are hard to notice in the book and depend on the improvisation of the actor. Go Toby! :-))

  • @Seddius I love that part. "Sit." "Not you Pilot!" Toby Stephens rocks Mr. Rochester. Aaawwww!

  • I like Ruth's lips. They add even more to her beauty.

  • She has, um...not so pretty lips.

  • ok... does anyone else think the character who plays Jane Eyre looks like Curt from Glee?

  • I've just seen a few other movie versions and I see they took a tiny bit of liberty with the dialogue here. To the better, though! It's more comprehensible to modern audience but still very faithful to the original. Praise to the scriptwriter.

  • i should reiterate that Ruth Wilson is too hot to play Jane

Stephens' acting is almost spot on, though!

  • I'm sorry but her lips really annoys me.

  • @CastJosephine lol me too

  • @CastJosephine

    sort of like duck bill...lol

  • @FritzieMaurelle thanks for the reply, I got it right after the hundered time I hit the replay button :-) tough sentence:-)

  • @Grencle yeah, it was "rough and ready ways" damn Mrs Fairfax and her pronunciation:-D

  • Toby Stephens is so incredibly sexy as Mr. Rochester. I love him in this role!

  • @trumpetbeth yeah, he's unbelievable:-) I've seen him in Twelfth Night as Orsino and I simply couldn't recognise him at first.... he really looks so much hotter as Mr Rochester

  • LEMME JUST SWIG DOWN THIS DRANK!

  • I love his voice!

  • If wish Mr. Rochester would talk to me like that, i would beat that mf...lol

  • @MrsChristina509 no kidding...he is a jackass

  • @yojez right

  • LOL. Freakin' love the dynamic chemistry between 'em. :)

  • please, could someone tell me, what exactly Mrs Farifax says to Jane at 5:25 ? you know, when she says she hopes Jane won't go away because of Rochester's something ways. I'm making subtitles for this movie and I simply don't recognise that word... (English is not my mother tongue) so please, please could you advise me?

  • @Grencle "What did you think of Master?" ....."Yes, but he has..he has had disappointments in his life. I hope you will forgive his rough and ready ways. You will not leave. I've grown used to you. I hope he won't scare you away."

  • @supergran1000 thanks a lot:-)

  • love that little smile at 9:35 <3

  • one of her drawings could be the movie "day after tomorrow" poster (half-buried statute of liberty) :D

  • Rochester: go over there and play

    *Jane plays happy tune*

    Rochester: O_o

  • "Gather round... not you, Naan Bread!"

  • i love when he roles his eyes when she starts playing the piano lol

  • umm i know she is supposed to be plain but i think tey might've over did it

  • rochester is hilarious

  • R: PLAY!!!!

    J: I play little

R: That's what they all say

J *plays the piano while R looks at her pictures in a patronizing way*

    R:ENOUGH!! yes, you play little.

ROFL!!! Love Mr R hes sooo funny

  • Toby Stephens has such a beautiful voice!!!

  • at 5:57 grace sounds like a man...bahahahahahaha

  • Rochester doesn't have an accent....er, well not much of one :(

  • R: My foot hurts like the blazes!

    J: Good night, sir.

If Rochester was looking for sympathy there, I think Jane just told him without saying a word where he could go look for it. LOL ;)

  • @MystickalChristian She's like "I don't give."

  • "Yes, you're right... You DO play a little."

Ahahaha! Oh, Rochester. You hilarious jerk. xD

  • I love the look on his face when she starts playing that cheerful little tune lol

  • @Britin101 lol i burst out laughing at that part. whatever he expected, it certainly wasn't THAT. XD though, i did find the tune quite cute.

  • a real classic!

  • Her upper lip looks extraordinary square

  • Just once on one of these Austin pieces when some woman goes to the piano, I wish they'd break out into Billy Joel!! lol

  • @Songsmirth

Not Austen for heaven's sake ;-)

  • Sit...if you please. LOL

  • he sounds like jack sparrow.

  • toby stephens...phwah

  • wow Mr. Rochester is so hot!...totally wrong look for the part, but i kinda don't care...

  • @ellsbells732 I think his hotness is arguable

  • You know, like Edward (and I know some of you don't like hearing this but please be fair in just listening), Mr. Rochster is put in a position where he had been dead to love. Mr. R knew he couldn't marry again and Edward never knew he could love. They both awake when these two women come into their lives. Edward awakes to a love he shouldn't encourage and knows is wrong. R awakes to a love he shouldn't consider but goes after it anyway because he's won't help it.

  • @Songsmirth Are you comparing Jane Eyre to Twilight? Just want to make sure I'm following you.

  • @dearjenny684 i dont know i thought mr.rochester name was edward

  • @Songsmirth Twilight...seriously?...

  • @desouzatray Yes, seriously. You keep asking me that but I dimissed you as a Twilight hater but I'll answer you now. Edward Cullen is a moral being as is his family. They have fought to go against their own natures because of those morals. Edward had his "fling" but he couldn't stand himself so went back to his family. He wants Bella but he goes about it correctly. Not Rochester! He hits on a servant and almost gets her to the alter. His life is sad but he has no right to do what he does.

  • @Songsmirth

    Newsflash! No-one gives a shit.

  • @TheFloatingBox You mean YOU don't care and that's your right but don't think you can speak(especially with that mature language of yours) for everyone. I don't think that, "everyone" would like you speaking for them but why don't you ask?

  • @Songsmirth

I get your point, I suppose...I don't think I'd appretiate someone voicing their opinion without stopping to think whether I agree with them or not...so I think you're right, actually. But I guess I'm just sick of seeing Twilight everywhere. Don't get me wrong, I actually quite like the books, just pisses me off when I see it compared to just about everything.

  • @TheFloatingBox Float, I'm glad you spoke so nicely to me in response. And I don't intermingle with whoever it is that you've gotten tired of listening to but I can understand it a bit. I'm pretty much done with them all. It's like anything else I've gotten into a frenzie over, one day I just am tired of it. And I'd bet those actors that do the movies are as tired! lol Take care. Songsmirth

  • @Songsmirth LOL I'm not a Twilight hater ;) i actually LUV it, lolz

  • I'm amazed when he tells Jane "a smile, a small one, a glimpse.." it sure made her blush

  • Comment removed

  • @therubysinger hilarious LOL!!!

  • can't get enough of this movie although there is another movie coming out with a different version of Jane Eyre

  • "you're right, you play a LITTLE." Gosh, she plays better then the average person!

  • "i should get my money's worth yet." lol awesome!!!!!

  • There's a noticeable attitude coming through this scene from Rochester which carries an acknowledgement of Wide Sargasso Sea

  • wat is that girl(ADEL)doing to that poor dog(pilot)

  • Anyone has any idea what she is playing on that piano? I have heard it before and maybe even played it a long time ago. What is it?? A sonata I guess?

  • I really like listening to his voice...

  • " I pay you a salary

    Do I ?

    Oh, Of courses I do ! "

I love when he speaks to himself :D

  • I am not sure of this version. Rochester is very rude. I don't like him

  • @islandsylph At least he acts like a real person. I mean, he acts human, unlike the other Rochesters I have seen. I like this version.

  • @Artemisss1 Actually as the program progressed I began to like him more, and at the end I found him quite agreeable :D

  • @islandsylph See? I found the same. :D

  • Rochester's a prick at times, but he's loveable. as a catus maybe...

  • "Oh no no, you must change!" Into your other gray dress, he, he...

I love it how in the scene with Adele Rochester's intense studuying gaze never leaves her face, not even when he's bringing the glass to his lips and returning it on the table afterwards.

"I do not wish to pry, sir". ""I know... Jane" This little smile on his face and the fact he calls her Jane for the first time are priceless.

  • This scene shows, in a very nice way, how little 'family' mattered to Rochester senior. Young Edward must have been very alone in that pile of stones even before he went to university or met Bertha. And now here's a girl who, instead of tract and scripture, reads naturalist books, *his* books, and knows what's in them. He's thinking *Treasure*.

  • @VolkgartenBySquirrel

Actually, Jane was a pious Christian, at least according to the book. Not an overbearing, stuffy zealot, mind you, or a hypocrite. Just a Christian. And it helped explain why she stuck to her integrity instead of running off to the south of France with him. You're right. Jane is a well-rounded treasure, and I'm so glad it all worked out! :)

  • I love his smile at 9:47!

  • @benso90 :) I know! He makes me feel like I have fireworks going off under my skin! The way he looks at her is amazing!!!

  • @musicalmeg19 Omg, I know lol. He's so smoldering XD

  • Rochester is cool- he makes a great match for her.

  • the book was much funnier... as when Rochester says "did you paint these with your own eyes?" "Yes sir" Those very eyes I see in your head at this moment?" "Yes sir"

  • 1:08 i must say jane eyre looks very beatifull in that part =]

  • go over there and play HAHAH

  • @FinalDaft13 She doesn't say he is outright ugly (until the end anyway) just that he isn't hansome.

  • @Elriaen I think the adjectives for ugly and attractive contemporary for Bronte's period were used broadly to describe manners and spirit as well as just appearance. Plus, what is handsome changes with the time period. I think his looks are appropriate, he is rough, but passionate. Fine in my book.

  • I never tire of watching this. Classic BBC adaptation.

  • UGh, he soo rude.

  • The language in this version sounds a bit too modern.

  • My god! this rochester is stone cold FOX!

  • wow he is a grouch

  • did you know Grace Pool is Aunt Marge in Harry Potter? The one who blows up. XD

  • @lindsayinwonderland Are you serious??? HAHAHA I did not know that!!!

  • Mr. Rochester: "Sit."

    **Dog Sits**

    Mr. Rochester: (Annoyed)"NOT YOU PILOT."

LMAO I loved that part and also when he admits that "he is learning to be polite." XD

  • @harrypotterfan6992 haha me too!!

  • @harrypotterfan6992 at first mr rochester comes across as a mean sort of person but deep down he's an ok guy

  • @cavalcailtricheco ooh yes! agree...deep, DEEP down he really is an ok guy :)

  • Ruth Wilson looks a little like Liv Tyler at times ^_^

  • His voice makes my ears melt..XDDDD

  • goofy/cute smile @9:50

  • thank you sooooooo much for posting!

  • thanks for the correction it was an honest mistake. would never dream of confusing the two ............

  • @reemmas Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte Bronte, not Jane Austen., hence the reason why it is darker.
