I prefer some Carpenters remakes to the originals, but not this one. A little too laid back for my taste. I much prefer one of Jo Stafford's renditions, although not the one that's in all the YouTube videos. Jo did another that's more upbeat at 110 bpm, rather than the slower 98 bpm in the videos or the 97 bpm of this version. The faster tempo makes it a real toe-tapper, much peppier and happier.

This was the porn I watched when I was 12y/o. I loved her so much that I told my mother that one day I was going to ask Karen Carpenter to marry me. I wrote poems so she could put music to them. Boy she was my platonic love for so long. We had a house three blocks away from their home. I saw her many times with her brother, they were so down to earth people. That is way we loved them so much. Her death was a blow to all of us. I remember how much I cried for her passing. RIP my beloved Karen.
It's absolutely horrible to watch this. One can see how sick she is, the poor woman, and the angelic voice and the nice song only accentuate the terror. Poor, poor girl.
Whose genius idea was it to cover this classic in such an awful way? One of the most unlistenable concoctions EVER! It's like the Schmenge Bros. (The Happy Wanderers from SCTV) backing up Karen on Hee Haw. Maybe they should have covered "Sympathy for the Devil" or "Stairway to Heaven" for an encore. ..

only the Carpenters could sanitize Jambalaya.....i like them and its a great song but this needs some grit to it......check out Emmylou Harris' version.....it kills!
It's hard to improve on the Hank Williams original. Instead I think the Carpenters put their own stamp on it. The pedal steel on it is an nice touch. It's a different arrangement than one might expect of a Hank cover but for me it works. Two enthusiastic thumbs up from me. (OK so I'm still a big Carpenters fan after all these years, so sue me.)
@frozenteaspoon albums are just like photographs, once it's taken it's permanent and who knows they may have changed it later for their concerts. It often happens that an artist decides he or she do not like their studio version and they change it up. Or maybe that's the best they can do considering they are stepping way out of their boundaries just trying it. Personaly, I like it with her beautiful voice. I can't see Karen singing with a country twang.
