What the Chronicle story actually says is that the GMP press office twice told the Chronicle that the attack was non-racial, which it reported. Chief Supt Forber then wrote to say that it was, which the Chronicle reported. It was the police that confused the issue, and the BNP that capitalised on it in its usual way.
