There's no way I'd want a manual transmission in a fire apparatus. There's too much going on for the driver to worry about shifting. Detroits' have some great sound if your watching the truck flying by on a run, but they make too much noise in the cab. Makes it hard to communicate with the rest of the crew. I prefer the Cummins engines.
Awsome ride, am wondering what chassis Your in? and what part of the country, looks like my area here in new England, Nothiing like a Detroit just got rid of a 60 series with a ton PP work, was dynoing 675, Great ride for sure thanks for sharing i'll make on this week in the KW cummins though may not even hear it on the cam, LOL.
@EdgevilleRWY NIICCCEEEEEEEEEEEEE, a Detroit with an automatic transmission! Now I know I can drive a big rig, but how to go about doing it for the show circuit....
My station has a '82 LS9000 with a 671ta and an allison 5speed. it's geared for the hills. Time has taken it's toll on the beast and it will soon be retired but it sure screamed up the hills.
She sounds great. We have a '98 HME with a 500 Detroit and an automated Fuller Road-ranger. Our neighboring department's brand new Sutphen can't hold a candle to her going up hill.
If it wasnt for Governments and enviro"mentalists", wed still have diesels that wernt noise regulated etc,, engines that still sound like this!
(How old is the truck? Its got a nice sound to it) Shame the engine isnt openly available here in the UK (Its mostly in Airport tenders), but then, the Old Gardners and Bristols were nice, and so were the Perkins!
Sweet! Ain't nothing sound better than a Detroit, especially the 6-71! What is that old girl, a Seagrave?
A Fire Department up in St Charles, MI has an '86 Pierce Arrow rescue with an 8v92 Detroit, it sounds awesome! I wanna try and get video of it running sometime.
@Krait99 It refers to the Jacobs Engine Brake, which uses engine compression to slow the vehicle when coasting. There are many types of devices which do this, but 'Jake Brake' has become commonly used to describe them all (like Scotch tape.)
Whatever happened to just enjoying ones video? Since when is there a need for other firefighters to make comments or insult ones video? Can we not just appreciate a video?
Now, seriously, if it is NOT your service in this video, just stfu and quit acting like you are the driving and fire authority. Each Fire Service has their own management and I would think THEY can determine what is acceptable or not in their city or county. Maybe lighten up a bit?? Great video EdgevilleRWY!!
Guess you failed at English Comp. I stated "(unless this is a non-life threatening call) Now, where might I find these "stats" you speak of regarding the use of lights and sirens?? I would be greatly interested in reading them, as would many other fire fighters.
@nmfd72 OK, you've got me. I can't put my finger on the statistical evidence. Most of the evidence seems anecdotal. NFPA and the USFA are good places to start. (YouTube won't allow me to post links, but Google is very helpful.)
If you truly believe that L&S don't increase the dangers of responding, I would urge you to seek out an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course ASAP.
@EdgevilleRWY What argument? where did I say that responding with L&S does not increase the dangers of responding?? Each and every time we respond to an emergency call there are dangers and risks, it's part of the job. Before putting anymore words in my mouth please try to comprehend my point here, which of course you missed from the getgo.
@nmfd72 Evidently I did miss your point. Please enlighten me, as all I saw was a questioning of my "stats" accompanied by an insult. I assumed it was an argument.
@EdgevilleRWY what argument? where did I state that L&S don't increase the dangers of responding?? each and every time we respond to Emergency calls there are dangers and risks, it's part of the job. Before putting words in some ones mouth try to comprehend their point. Obviously, you totally missed mine from the getgo. Also, if you can't back up your statements, Re: "stats" don't post them.
THIS TRUCK IS MOVING AT A PRETTY GOOD CLIP. TO RESPOND WITHOUT USING THE SIREN (UNLESS THIS IS A NON LIFE THREATENING CALL) IS UNSAFE AND PUTS THE CREW AND DRIVING PUBLIC IN HARMS WAY. SO, MAYBE THIS IS JUST A SUNDAY STROLL??
@nmfd72 Wow. First, stop shouting. Secondly, it only looks fast. The entire response never exceeded the speed limit. Thirdly, the response was for a lockout (non emergency), which you can hear on the radio traffic. Finally, the statistics on lights & siren use say you greatly INCREASE the risks to the crew and the public when using them. I will concede that it is stupid to use one without the other, but that is not the case here.

just FYI thats not a jake brake that is an engine brake... but other than that decent i prefer the cummins or cat over the detroit i've always found that the detroits lack the power that the cummins has, they are though more durable than the cat seeing that the cat always seems to have parts vibrate loose and seem to love to leak oil
I'd like to know how you define the difference between Jake brake and engine brake. It's not an exhaust brake, if that's what you mean. And it was made by Jacobs. . .
Wow, way to sound off without having a clue. It's not a Captain, it was a Lieutenant, and SHE was the one steadying the MOUNTED camera. Read the rest of the comments if you want to know more about the call. And watch your language, please.
Thanks, been through this before. Per Seagrave and FDNY, the numbers match for a 1985. The cab has been changed. Good thing, as the H cabs were rust buckets and won't fit in our station anyway.
You will note this was a non-emergency run, conducted at the speed limit on streets with a max speed of 35 MPH. There's no need to risk anyone's life for a lockout!
It could, but this is a ladder truck. No pump. The main engine does run the ladder hydraulics, and the same type of engine was commonly found in pumpers.
Nice... The firetrucks in my local town all use Detroit 2-strokes. And they are bigger than my car!! Got the privilege of getting under one that was on a super-lift for engine maintenance. EVERYTHING is big about those engines...

If any of you have grown up in a small town, you know when the fire truck's comin.
Mt. Carroll IL used to (and I think still does have) a 70s era International fire truck. Engine screaming from the fire station through the hills in town and getting to the scene.
FDNY used a special muffler on their rigs in the 80's to keep noise levels down in the cab. Most other apparatus weren't being as safety conscious when these were built, hence the different sound. Still sounds wonderful!

brother let me tell you something about a manual transmission in an engine we just replaced our 81 seagrave with a 5 speed double clutch allison and with a broken tac to boot try to listen to that detroit over siren and air horn anyway your truck brings back memories its like an orchestra with redlights
sounds like an ole Allison HT-748 tranny. most fire trucks had those trannies.....either those or HT-740s. Nice sound...love the blowing radiator fan noise.
I'd like to say it was a choice; the ALFs were good trucks and I'd stand by them any day. The Seagrave was the only 100'RM we could find to fit in the building. We're happy with it, but 'choice' isn't really the word to describe it. Thanks, though.
671T/HT740, yes. My understanding was that the Silver designation referred to the -92 series engines, though. We do have a Silver 6V92TA/HT740 in one of the pumps, though.
