  • There's no way I'd want a manual transmission in a fire apparatus. There's too much going on for the driver to worry about shifting. Detroits' have some great sound if your watching the truck flying by on a run, but they make too much noise in the cab. Makes it hard to communicate with the rest of the crew. I prefer the Cummins engines.

  • love that sound

  • wheres the siren was it broke?

  • Sweet, and yes a manual would bring that Detroit rumble to life.

  • Nearly all diesel engines sound awful. One of the few exceptions are the Detroit 2-strokers, I love 'em.

Now.... where can I get hold of a 6-71 coupled to a semi-auto box to replace the asthmatic Ford heap I've got in my old truck?

  • Awsome ride, am wondering what chassis Your in? and what part of the country, looks like my area here in new England, Nothiing like a Detroit just got rid of a 60 series with a ton PP work, was dynoing 675, Great ride for sure thanks for sharing i'll make on this week in the KW cummins though may not even hear it on the cam, LOL.

    Thanks

  • @Domal88 1985 Seagrave. I don't remember which chassis it is. Filmed in Rowley, MA. See RowleyFire(dot)org

  • @EdgevilleRWY NIICCCEEEEEEEEEEEEE, a Detroit with an automatic transmission! Now I know I can drive a big rig, but how to go about doing it for the show circuit....

  • @EdgevilleRWY I'm in Ellington CT, we ain't got anything like this, not sure if we ever did.

  • @EdgevilleRWY If the price of diesel fuel weren't so high, I'd buy myself a diesel truck.

  • Is it an Allison or what?

  • Where was this shot, it looks like New England.

  • oh ya bc ur suppose to be holding a camera and driving a firetruck to a call.....real smart dumbass

  • yer real slow lol

  • That engine sounds awesome for it's age,

we used it on on a 1959 Diesel-Hydraulic shunter

on a 1 speed "allison torque converter" engine tops 1950rpm,

sounds the same as your truck, we still use that shunter today.

  • yep you weren't lying

  • My station has a '82 LS9000 with a 671ta and an allison 5speed. it's geared for the hills. Time has taken it's toll on the beast and it will soon be retired but it sure screamed up the hills.

  • dude we have a 1989 Pierce Arrow with the same engine in it. that sucker is loud and fast. We love it.

  • She sounds great. We have a '98 HME with a 500 Detroit and an automated Fuller Road-ranger. Our neighboring department's brand new Sutphen can't hold a candle to her going up hill.

  • @Lvfd416 our fire departments use scanias 350 horses

  • good ol screamin jimmy....i wish my station had detroits in our trucks

  • If it wasnt for Governments and enviro"mentalists", wed still have diesels that wernt noise regulated etc,, engines that still sound like this!

(How old is the truck? Its got a nice sound to it) Shame the engine isnt openly available here in the UK (Its mostly in Airport tenders), but then, the Old Gardners and Bristols were nice, and so were the Perkins!

  • @ImRatherTall

    This is a 1985 model.

  • This truck is going thru it!! I love it!!!

  • This would be the similar sound, if the Los Angeles Unified School District Crown Supercoach fleets came with the Allison Automatic Transmission.

  • Sweet! Ain't nothing sound better than a Detroit, especially the 6-71! What is that old girl, a Seagrave?

A Fire Department up in St Charles, MI has an '86 Pierce Arrow rescue with an 8v92 Detroit, it sounds awesome! I wanna try and get video of it running sometime.

  • Well....SOME say this is "old school"...but "old school" to me is a Crown Fire Coach with a Hall-Scott!

  • hall- scotts are what real engine companys sound like.

  • What is Jake braking?

  • @Krait99 It refers to the Jacobs Engine Brake, which uses engine compression to slow the vehicle when coasting. There are many types of devices which do this, but 'Jake Brake' has become commonly used to describe them all (like Scotch tape.)

This one does have a genuine Jacobs device. HTH,

  • @EdgevilleRWY Bravo my brother perfect analogy . There are alot of new truck drivers out there cant tell you what one is . its scary out there

  • @Krait99 really?

  • Whatever happened to just enjoying ones video? Since when is there a need for other firefighters to make comments or insult ones video? Can we not just appreciate a video?

Now, seriously, if it is NOT your service in this video, just stfu and quit acting like you are the driving and fire authority. Each Fire Service has their own management and I would think THEY can determine what is acceptable or not in their city or county. Maybe lighten up a bit?? Great video EdgevilleRWY!!

  • Guess you failed at English Comp. I stated "(unless this is a non-life threatening call) Now, where might I find these "stats" you speak of regarding the use of lights and sirens?? I would be greatly interested in reading them, as would many other fire fighters.

  • @nmfd72 OK, you've got me. I can't put my finger on the statistical evidence. Most of the evidence seems anecdotal. NFPA and the USFA are good places to start. (YouTube won't allow me to post links, but Google is very helpful.)

If you truly believe that L&S don't increase the dangers of responding, I would urge you to seek out an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course ASAP.

BTW, the insult doesn't help your argument.

  • @EdgevilleRWY What argument? where did I say that responding with L&S does not increase the dangers of responding?? Each and every time we respond to an emergency call there are dangers and risks, it's part of the job. Before putting anymore words in my mouth please try to comprehend my point here, which of course you missed from the getgo.

  • @nmfd72 Evidently I did miss your point. Please enlighten me, as all I saw was a questioning of my "stats" accompanied by an insult. I assumed it was an argument.

  • @EdgevilleRWY "Enlighten" you? No Thanks, it's fruitless. Have a good day.

  • @EdgevilleRWY what argument? where did I state that L&S don't increase the dangers of responding?? each and every time we respond to Emergency calls there are dangers and risks, it's part of the job. Before putting words in some ones mouth try to comprehend their point. Obviously, you totally missed mine from the getgo. Also, if you can't back up your statements, Re: "stats" don't post them.

  • THIS TRUCK IS MOVING AT A PRETTY GOOD CLIP. TO RESPOND WITHOUT USING THE SIREN (UNLESS THIS IS A NON LIFE THREATENING CALL) IS UNSAFE AND PUTS THE CREW AND DRIVING PUBLIC IN HARMS WAY. SO, MAYBE THIS IS JUST A SUNDAY STROLL??

  • @nmfd72 Wow. First, stop shouting. Secondly, it only looks fast. The entire response never exceeded the speed limit. Thirdly, the response was for a lockout (non emergency), which you can hear on the radio traffic. Finally, the statistics on lights & siren use say you greatly INCREASE the risks to the crew and the public when using them. I will concede that it is stupid to use one without the other, but that is not the case here.

  • i love the sound of that Detroit Engine....(sweet)

  • nicce mannn we have a old 76 rescue pumper love the old girls

  • gotta love them old detroits that idles the best i've ever heard!

  • It sounds just like a 1981 Orion I! OMG!!! I love it!

  • Sharp sound, I like it

  • I'd like to know how you define the difference between Jake brake and engine brake. It's not an exhaust brake, if that's what you mean. And it was made by Jacobs. . .

  • Comment removed

  • Our tenders have those in them. They will run forever.

  • Who is driving the truck

  • 1985 Seagrave - read EdgevilleRWY's comment above!

  • sweet!

    thanks

  • what year is this truck?

  • since sound! but somehow I still like the Scania P470 Sound better, don't know why

  • I love it! I appreciate the work you guys do... our real hometown heroes!

  • The prime mover that built America.

  • Wow, way to sound off without having a clue. It's not a Captain, it was a Lieutenant, and SHE was the one steadying the MOUNTED camera. Read the rest of the comments if you want to know more about the call. And watch your language, please.

  • how many gears?

is it an epicyclic gearbox like normal automatics?

must have several more planetry stages than a normal car?

  • fairfield california??

  • that sounds like a 6v92 to me

  • sounds just like a trash truck.

  • Wow. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

  • does that radiator fan cut on and off by itself? Wouldnt mind getting a quick from a stand still take off without the fan.

  • Thanks, been through this before. Per Seagrave and FDNY, the numbers match for a 1985. The cab has been changed. Good thing, as the H cabs were rust buckets and won't fit in our station anyway.

  • You will note this was a non-emergency run, conducted at the speed limit on streets with a max speed of 35 MPH. There's no need to risk anyone's life for a lockout!

  • Real fire engines have Maxidynes!

  • Only if it's a Mack. Everything else has the Detroit Diesel.

  • 1985 Seagrave, x-FDNY SL8506

  • oh cool

  • umm what year?

  • Can that same engine run the pump?

  • It could, but this is a ladder truck. No pump. The main engine does run the ladder hydraulics, and the same type of engine was commonly found in pumpers.

  • Nice... The firetrucks in my local town all use Detroit 2-strokes. And they are bigger than my car!! Got the privilege of getting under one that was on a super-lift for engine maintenance. EVERYTHING is big about those engines...

  • Dude, nothing sounds better than a Detroit 2-Stroke.

  • thats what a real fire truck sounds like My blood gets pumping when I hear a detriot diesel engine

  • Do ear plugs come standard with the firefighting gear?

  • No,just alot of yelling to the guy sitting a foot away and a lot of radio traffic!

  • Very nice, we have a 1979 Maxim pumper with an 8v92 Detroit Turbo Diesel, the turbo was added a couple of years later, it came without it, but it is the most beautiful sound, and it absolutely screams down the road.

  • beautiful sound!

  • That's too nice of a neighborhood to be in Detroit.

  • I'd suggest reading the rest of the comments or Googling 'Detroit Diesel'.

  • Huh? Are you mixing MPH and KPH? This is a 35MPH zone, and the rig tops out around 50MPH anyway. 90MPH in ANY fire apparatus (outside an airport) is highly dangerous and criminally stupid, IMHO.

  • seemed like you were traveling pretty fast though. guess its the way the camera makes it feel as though your going faster than you really are. I do remember the old ALF'S lord know you damn sure knew when they were in the neighborhood. could hear 'em 3 miles away. now the trucks are to quite unless you see or hear the emergency equipment you dont realize theyre around much anymore. nice video though good job.

  • Hi I am from Norfolk UK. What is a jake brake? never heard the term before. Thanks & Good Luck Stay safe.

  • It's a form of engine compression brake or retarder, commonly used on fire apparatus (at least here in the US.) Check out Jakebrake(.)com for details.

  • basically it opens the exhaust valve in the chambers so that the truck slows down

  • This is totally a Firefighting icon, the sound of Detroit diesel, gotta love it.

  • detroit diesel S60?

  • 6-71T. What's an S60?

  • Detroit Diesel Series 60.

  • Non-emergency service call.

  • we tried to get a detriot in our new Engine but it had to be special ordered and the price went to the moon

  • dont all the fire trucks have autos in them now?

  • I like a mack with a dpuble clutch man transmission

  • A few people had asked for exterior shots of the rig. If you go to my 'EVOC 2007' video you can see it along with our engines.

  • mah pop got a peterbilt oldskool cat550 its nice

  • I love the sound of our '82 Hahn.

    8-71 Detroit with a 5 speed manual.

The Q and the motor both work as warning devices.

  • this truck has a automatic tranny

  • If any of you have grown up in a small town, you know when the fire truck's comin.

Mt. Carroll IL used to (and I think still does have) a 70s era International fire truck. Engine screaming from the fire station through the hills in town and getting to the scene.

  • i think it is. if anything else, it'd be a 6v92 which it isn't. it revs way too high to be a v92. the 6v92 has a "moan", rather than a "scream".

  • FDNY used a special muffler on their rigs in the 80's to keep noise levels down in the cab. Most other apparatus weren't being as safety conscious when these were built, hence the different sound. Still sounds wonderful!

  • If you can't say something nice. . .

  • that's because that's all that's in between your ears, what else would you expect?

  • LMAO

  • lol

  • Sounds like an old Crown school bus

  • ive heard some Orion I buses with 6V53Ns and Allison MB643 trannies. The dam motor sounds like it's gunna blow up!

  • dont no CAT motor sound like that

  • I can assure you it's a 671 Detroit, with turbo. Been driving them for a long time.

  • I would like it better with a nice Q to that engine sound but hey good video !!

please go and see my 2 new videos, comments and/or rattings are greatly welcome!

  • you'd be lucky to hear that on a fire truck

  • i had the insurance under the fire department but the title and reg was in my name so when they merged my insurance was voided and in my stae you counldnt have a fire truck insured unless it was in service so the cheif of the house we meged with became the insurer but i didnt work with him so the state made me give it up to him...its really confusing...and the distriict number on the truck was our district so it counted as a town unit not a personal unit...ugh i hate our state...new jersey

  • whew i miss drivin trucks like that...i remember back in 79 i had a hahn personal engine that thing was a beast i met the rest of the f.d on locationi drove it straight from my house...sucks i had to give it up when our f.d merged

  • Is that a skirt i hear in the beggining?? Not a normal sound for a "real engine"!!!haha j/k

  • Or just go to rowleyfire(dot)org and follow the links to Apparatus/Ladder 1.

  • my unle steve fights fires

  • oh yeah i watched the video one more time and your right it does lack a manual transmission LOL!!!!!! any way its for sale if anybodys interested HA HA!!!

  • brother let me tell you something about a manual transmission in an engine we just replaced our 81 seagrave with a 5 speed double clutch allison and with a broken tac to boot try to listen to that detroit over siren and air horn anyway your truck brings back memories its like an orchestra with redlights

  • You havent heard anything untill you have hear my departments 1954 American Lafrance Ladder truck! Yes thats right, i said 1954!

  • our 1995 e-one has a6v92. love the sound of a detroit roarin as your going to a call.

  • shame england dont get fire trucks with these sort of engines, our local airport has an american aiport firetruck with a detroit!

  • sounds like an ole Allison HT-748 tranny. most fire trucks had those trannies.....either those or HT-740s. Nice sound...love the blowing radiator fan noise.

  • I'd like to say it was a choice; the ALFs were good trucks and I'd stand by them any day. The Seagrave was the only 100'RM we could find to fit in the building. We're happy with it, but 'choice' isn't really the word to describe it. Thanks, though.

  • I thought this was in Detroit according to the title.

  • That would be a Detroit Diesel. Why should fire engines in Detroit sound different than anywhere else?

  • very nice truck, fire trucks with those manuals would kill alot of fire drivers.

  • No manual in this one. Allison automatic. The old one had a manual, and I do miss it though.

  • 671T/HT740, yes. My understanding was that the Silver designation referred to the -92 series engines, though. We do have a Silver 6V92TA/HT740 in one of the pumps, though.

  • i never heard the jake

  • It's in there, coasting to the stop at about the 3:12 mark. Sounds better from outside the cab.

  • Do you have a video of this from the outside?

  • Not currently.
