@CanadianReich That's a nice theory, except for one problem: when I watch old Simpson's clips I've seen a dozen times, I still laugh like crazy. I can barely watch the new episodes without cringing. The reasons new Simpsons isn't very good is fairly easy to explain. It got new writers and they aren't as good. End of story.

What went wrong was the show becoming more politicized, making certain characters act alot more different compared to how they normally act, and generally having unfunny episodes. Flanders is an example of character derailment because while in earlier seasons he was a very nice, patient person, who was perhaps a little too zealous in his Christianity, nowadays he's practically a fundamentalist who is used by the writers to mock right-wing Republicans. I want the old Simpsons back.
